Allen Blade

Count me in as yet another schmuck who ordered and prepaid (Sept. 2000) for a knife and never got it. Last word I got back from him was an email dated 12/18/01 saying that it would done "shortly", whatever that means to him. :(

My friend Joe Chen is still waiting for multiple prepaid knives from the same time period as well. To call the situation and him "exasperating" is very charitable.

You guys that are being paranoid have good reason to be. Allen has done things like this many times in the past, followed up with many lies and promises to start new and correct all past problems. I had a knife on order with Allen, but a very heated exchange between Allen, Cori, and myself (along with my classic "zipper" comment) killed my order. Doesn't look like I will ever own a knife from Allen. Then again, no one else may ever own one again either. I know others who have knives on order with Allen that were paid for in advnace. Some of these folks are on a very limited budget and need the knife or money back. It's a shame for all this to happen to Allen, but he can't blame anyone but himself. He brought every but of this junk on himself and now he is forced to live with it. It's a shame it has to happen, but it is happening. I hope all you guys with orders paid for get them soon. If not, legal action needs to take place. Maybe it will finally wake him up.

From what I understood from a prior thread, Allen Blade is his actual name now- he had it legally changed. As per the same thread, IIRC, the similarity of his knives & Mad Dogs are the result of prior *collaboration* between the two. Much poop was flung heavy & hard & from many directions during the time of those threads- so I hope not to pick at any festering scabs. I've really enjoyed the Magnum Monk I got from a fellow Forumite & wish Mr. Blade success.

I did exchange emails with Mr. Allen a week before. We talked about refinishing my carbon steel chipmunk and ordering another talonite chipmunk. He told me that refinishing will cost me nothing except the expense to ship back and several days. Also he told me that he will be getting a piece of talonite recently and will inform me then. It seems that he is right on his way back to knife making and I think he is very kind.

What a sad thread this is. A man of such obvious talent bedevilled by such mysterious demons. I wish Allen Blade well.

I believe that if you order something thru the mail, pay for it and then don't recieve it,
it is called MAIL FRAUD!
Am I wrong or is this no longer a crime?
A federal felony if I am not mistaken, I hope some of you saved your canceled checks.

Mail fraud. How scary. Take a trip over to GBU. Mail fraud is everyone's favorite way to deal with schmucks. kwitcher freakin whinin, ya bunch of armchair lawyers.

Ain't this a pretty picture. One knifemaker airing a little dirty laundry and slamming a fellow tradesman. And for what? Maybe, say, petty revenge!? And encouraging others to threaten him with the postal inspector. Disgusting.

Yeah, mail fraud is a crime. But so is slander and interfering with another man's livelihood. Hard as this sounds, if it looks like a *uck and slanders like a *uck ...

I have a nice little knife that Allen sent me one year ago.

We all have our demons to deal with in ways which we think, at the time, is optimal. Sometimes we're wrong....AGAIN.

Hope Allen pulls it all together for himself. Not for us.

I don't own any of Allen's knife and do not have any order with him.

However, from the description all has voiced here, it seems that his work is so superb that he should be able to make a living out of it. I think someone who doesn't love the work will not be able to make such a superb knife.

Also during my joining this forum, majority of knife nuts are decent people (although sometimes with flowery personality :) ) and knife makers are even better than that, you know what I mean.

My conclusion is: he has his problem that he needs to fix and he surely should continue making knives.

The last post is right: let him pull it together, for himself

Allen, wish you luck

Boy hd2k_va, that sure was an aggressive post. Obviously something Robert posted upset you more than Allen taking money for knives and then not supplying them. I don't see that it is whining to want your knife when you have already paid for it. Possibly as much as 2 years ago. There is no excuse to take payment for something and then not supply it for 2 years, and people should take whatever legal action they can to get their knives, or their money back.

Slander and interfering with a persons livelihood are not criminal actions. They are civil actions. You do not go to jail for them, but you can be sued. Of course what is being said must also not be the truth.

Allen has been banned from Bladeforums for good cause. I for one believe in honesty when you deal with the people who feed you! Because sooner or later you will go hungry if you don't.

This hurts all makers in a small way by undermining Custom knife Buyers/collectors trust.

I also hope that Allen gets it together for his own sake but. I have no beef with him, only his business practices.

If no one stands up and demands to get what they paid for and send a clear message how can this change for the better for him or his customers? It just keeps opening a sore subject.

This is exactly right. When I was a Postal Service manager, we had counselors who were very successful helping employees with alcohol, drug, and psychological problems. One of the points they stressed for us, was to go ahead with any corrective (disciplinary) action we needed to take, and not 'give them a break' because they were troubled. Only when they had to deal with whatever it was that wasn't working, would they, and begin to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, other knifemakers, who do get the job done, have every right to an opinion -- as we all do, actually. They aren't being petty. Allen Blade is a better man than what he is going through right now, and it's time for him to remember that.

I am one of those with an order from Allen. I will try to keep this brief, as many know the story already.

the christmas before last I spoiled my girlfriend, so for my birthday (Jan. 24th) she decided to get me a custom from Allen. I wanted a MEUK because I heard of the work Allen has doen on knives, I had him make a sheath for a knfie I made, and I ordered 2 knifemaking videos from him in the past. I couldn't wait to get my first custom!

Just before or after (I think before) the new year, my GF sent in the money (it came to $99.95 US dollars) and I was quoted a 2-4 month wait. Then the troubles started.

Last I was quoted (from Cori), they tried hard to get my knfie finished so I could haev ot for this last Christmas, but they were unable to. But, I was "next on the list" or whatever. Mien was to be finished next. My birthday has come and gone again, and still no MEUK.

I am being as patient as I can. I am giving Allen as much support as I can, because divorces and moves and all that can take a lot out of a person. Indeed, Allen does seem to be different from the guy that I ordered the knife from. But is also hurts, as this is my first custom order and my girlfriend paid and still nothing.

I still think that Allen will finish my knife soon. I also think that Allen could make it out of the troubles. Closing the forum he and Cori started is a good idea, as I think he took on too much. Once Allen clears up the back orders, which should be a priority, I bet Allen can make it as a knfie maker full time again if he so desires. There are enough people around here who would forgive him and help out as well with advice.

Allen, please get your back log cleared up. Every report I hear about the quality of your knives sings their praises. EVERY one! It would be a shame for you to drop out of knife making. If you need help, ask. People will help you if you ask. Please be honest in your dealings, and give what is owed to those who have knives owed to them. Good Luck, and happy belated birthday to you.

Well take it from a Duck then...Allen is a awsome knifemaker and a equaly tallented sheath make but he has a very hard time doing what he promises..Painfully sad but true..

Screw Allen Blade. There is enough people in the world like him.Cheats people out of their money under the pretense of making a knife for them.I call it being a thief. You are either a thief or not a thief.
I'm tired of people making excuses for this clown.Screw him.

hd2k_va:should look around a little more before you interject your"words of wisdom"
BTW-your first Harley????

I have never and will never understand why folks want custom knives from other folks who are not straight up. Take a long look around there are way too many honest straight forward folks making knives to deal with the ones who are not. We all make mistakes what defines us is how we handle them.

I do not know enough about Allen to say anything except there sure is a lot of smoke.
I suggest that before making decisions on a custom, check around maybe even look around here and see how that maker handles themselves on-line.

If I see self hype and abuse of another person's site including this one, it does not matter how good of a knife they make, I will not come close to owning it. I have to appreciate the work and the person to own the knife.

Agreed. Being able to deal personally with such wonderful people as George Tichbourne, Thomas Haslinger, Bud Weston, GenO Denning, Michael Cooper, Dale Reif, Eric Elson, Robert Dockrell, Tom Mayo, Kathleen Tomey, et al makes owning my knives just that much more pleasurable.

I guess I was lucky. I ordered, paid for, and received my knife long before I was made aware of Allen Blade's business "reputation".

But I do feel sorry for a person who has an obvious talent and -- whether because of a personality disorder, circumstances, or plain stupidity -- can't take advantage of it.

I could not agree more and hope that the problems can be worked out.
The first step to take is honesty in words and actions. The knife community as a whole can be very forgiving when we try to face up to our mistakes, correct our problems and do our best to avoid repeating them.
