Son, you are NOT whining.

You're musing.

You've had a very intense, very real life experience. You're not going to be the same after this ... it's not something you're just going to shake off.

That's OK. We ALL go through these things. Just don't sit alone while you're musing -- talk it out with people you love and then, again, with people you respect. Figure out what this means ... to you. Put it in perspective. No matter how long it takes.

And then move on down the road. I did.:)

I almost drowned once.

I was about 9 riding in the front of a canoe on the IL river. Wake from a speedboat flipped us. I was trying to jump out but my legs slipped under the seat and got wedged in tight.

Was stuck under the boat seeing the surface so close but I was not able to reach it. I prayed not to die like that. No air. Knowing I have to breath sometime. Strangely, I worried that my gym shoes were ruined.

I was able to get the canoe upright twice and both times it flipped back. Finally on the third flip I was able to get out.

I still won't get into a canoe and am still not very comfortable in any boat over deep water.

I feel you man....

I had a very similar experience many years ago as a kid, in MD actually. In my case, I was able to get my feet under and get the skirt off.

Glad you're okay. :)

Wow, that sounds real scary. Did it change your life-view at all?

I think it has I feel I appreciate it much more....funny I caught myself taking deep breathes today and feeling relieved. I have some what drifted through the day and could not concentrate at work. I feel better physically but I feel it will take some time to cope with this mentally.

Its not the right word to say its "good" to know that others know what I went through and what I am talking about. I wouldnt wish this on anyone and I am glad those of you made it out too, its just nice to know someone else understands.

Right. No one took what happened to me very seriously so they didn't understand. No one really saw cause they were all trying to swim themselves.

It was terrifying. Took me a long time to get a grip on it.

I'm glad you're okay. Any brush with death tends to put things in perspective. Sounds like you're experiencing some post-trauma. Give it time and get back on that horse when you're able.

Maybe give some thought to a sit-on-top? When you flip, you just fall out. They certainly make better fishing platforms.

I just bought a couple of recreational kayaks for pleasure paddling (no white water), but I'm not sure I'd paddle them with a skirt. They're so wide you're not going to roll one back up to the surface. With those, I'd rather just bail out and either use a bilge or just swim (with life vest) and tow the yak back to shore.

Once it gets cold, it's back to the sit-on-top, waders, and a dry top. Before it gets too cold though, I want to practice some re-entries again with that gear.

Glad you made it. Thanks for sharing. Just goes to prove that it could all be over before you know it. Now go out and buy another knife and enjoy life life to the fullest and take the experience as a gift.

Yup, that's the route I wound up going too. My little adventure didn't leave me with any new found fear the water, but I will admit that I don't care for the feeling of being "one with the boat" anymore. Since I don't run heavy whitewater anyway, this approach works fine for me.

Nice rig, Guyon.
