Almost time for a new EDC folder...

The G-10 Tyrade is a bad ass knife as well. I realize that it is a recurve, but I think you have the skills to fix that if need be, no?

I've had two Rat-1's... well... still do have one of them. I just want something different. I like to try new folders. Most of the folders I've picked out have been winners and any one of them would still do fine for everything I need. It's more a matter of wanting to try something new. Lately, I've been eyeing SOG's Pentagon Elite II and Spec Elite II. I might try one of those out if I can find one at the right price. I've never tried a VG-10 blade so I'd like to see how it performs. BUT, I'm still very open to suggestions.

I've been carrying all week, sog in my coin pocket on my jeans, my izzie on my waist, and 3 has been hiding in my bag ;) out of sight :D

The only thing i HATE about sogs are their accidental deploy lock, novel ideas, but over time wear out. And can sometimes engage in a potentially dangerous situation where you need the blade out quick, and it accidentally locks? Ugh. I like the Rat1's. I should google and see how much they are and where I can gets.

I suppose I could just remove the locking mechanism in the sog, I love their blades, and assisted open.

dealer on the exchange is advertising RAT-1's for a good price if you're really interested in one - it's the title of his thread.

Well I spent several hours in the Smokey Mountain Knifeworks building yesterday. Got to put my hands on a lot of the knives I wanted to compare. I originally didn't want to go over 150 bucks but I think I made my decision. It's WAY more money, but I just kept coming back to it over and over again, the Zero Tolerance 301. I love that knife. Good beefy design, built like a brick s@#$house. I dig it. Bout a hunned more than I wanted to spend, but I'm just in love. I need to unload a Becker BK-9 and sell one from the batch I'm finishing up for tomorrow and I'll be placing ye ole' order. Can't wait to get it.

good choice Dylan, you might wanna look at kershawguys blem thread, he has 0301's for about 100 less.

I got a S60V Blur blem from him, he's good one to deal with! Good luck and post up some pics when you get it in!

I played with one of those yesterday and my hand just didn't like it. I picked up every SOG made. Kind of disappointing actually. I like a lot of SOG's stuff, but just couldn't find a folder I wanted to dish out the cash for in their lineup. Plus, there's just something that happens when you pick up a Zero Tolerance. The clouds part. Angels sing. Tent pops. It's spiritual.

I haven't had the chance to try out any ZT's. They look beautiful and the specs seem pretty decent ( I like Ken Onion alot. I have a few of his Shun Kitchen knives)....you'll have to let us know how it performs! Congrats on the new get anyways

late to the party, as usual...
I really just don't get the ZT love. I've handled them, and they're ok, but if I need to carry THAT much folder I'm going to carry fixed instead.
dylan, you said you wanted something that's fast to open and close: have you ever carried/handled a benchmade 940? it's a ton of knife in a deceptively light package, with a LOT of blade for the size. the blade puts a lot of material at the tip, it's very strong, and just as fast as any of my autos. I suspect that a lot of folks think it's a weak knife, but I'd put it up against just about anything else out there.

i really like my ZT 200. well, that is after i sent it back to them. seems that "Zero Tolerance" doesn't include making sure all the holes to mount the pocket clip are threaded.

anyway, once they sent it back, i moved the clip and it's GTG. the thing is solid, but i need a lanyard for it to make drawing it just a bit quicker.

i also like that Kershaw/ZT will send you replacement clips and screws and a few other misc parts for free if needed.

and i was looking at the KA-Bar site the other day, and this looks interesting and is reasonably priced with a MSRP of $68. not sure if it has a flipper tho... i'm really liking the folders with flippers.. now if i could just find my CRKT Desert Cruiser.

No flipper and HUGELY uncomfortable. When you go to open them the projection of the guard jams right into your thumb. At the knife shop I work at we looked at these when they first came out and just couldn't find a way to open them comfortably.

I like the idea of the cs pocket bushman, but idk if the lock is useful for edc tasks, I know 42blades shows how to open/ close one handed, but it just seems quite complicated!

I agree. I held one of these at my local shop and had the same issue.:thumbdn::thumbdn:

they're solidly built. after the nightmare i had with my REKAT Sifu falling apart in my pocket after carrying it for ONE day, that's important. they also covered the one minor problem with it under warranty... unlike REKAT where i had to pay for new screws and shiping to try and repair a poor design.

they're made in the USA. sure, some other companies make some nice stuff offshore, but i like to support domestic companies/vendors when i can.

it looked good, felt good and the design won't slip when thrusting. some of the folders sold for defensive/utility use don't have much of a guard built into them.

i was happy with the price i paid, but i've seen them significantly cheaper since i got it. but the price would double if it said "Spyderco" or "Benchmade" on it. i like both those brands and have some of each, but the prices just keep going up.

the 3D scales feel really good in my hands. i have some folders with G10 scales and they get kinda slick with age. it's a big heavy knife... but i can't carry a fixed blade that size on y belt because it would be "concealed" and in my state i can't legally conceal a blade larger than 3", even with a CCW...because THAT only covers handguns. hmm... don't ask me to explain why they call it a CCW and not CCH then. and that's why the shirt is always untucked, covering the beltline.

an ESEE folder would be really sweet, because unlike some other companies where i like some models but not others, i've always liked ALL of the Rat/ESEE blade designs... i just haven't gotten around to getting one yet. hoping to change that soon. plus the warranty is VERY reassuring, and i like both the desert colored blades and the stuff with the ORANGE scales (the black/gray knives are nice too, but many brands make black/gray knives), AND the price point is reasonable on all the blades.

drat.

thanks for the info tho!

It takes getting used to, but it's second nature now. I disengage it slow in the video clip so you can see what I'm doing. It's real fast and easy when you get used to it, and it's a fun knife to fidget with. It works best if you do it using your back pocket, but I used my front one for the video so folks didn't have my butt in their face. :)

For those who haven't seen it: How to Close the Pocket Bushman One-Handed

See this clip for the standard method--it's much safer than the method the instructions tell you!

Thanks! Yeah, looks easier than I envisioned, now I need to handle/see one, as I have smallish hands (size med) so I'd like to know how it fits me.
Now, on topic, have you considered any Mcustas? If you're flexible in you're knife size ideas here's one I like! And it's somewhat affordable!

Look here for other handle/blade steel options!

Hope this helps!
