Alone in the wild - Who's watching?

I guess im the only one who did like the show......... It was as real as it get for me.
He went way over his head. I figure that how survival is realy is. I wonder if i would do better.. I know i wont cry as it just not me but how bad would i starve that is the Q... Im sure the starving is what realy did him in.... That was a real show even if it wasnt all that.

Sasha

I gotta give it to Sasha on the one point. It would be pretty disturbing to watch yourself starving. Just one of the ways he was in over his head.

Another was poor location planning. There are areas of the north country where contrary to popular opinion, there is very little game. He may have been in one of those areas. He should have also used some more varied and efficien techniques for gathering food (never did see hiom se a trot line for example). He also never set out near enough snares or deadfalls. The most I saw him set was 3 or so. It is best to set a hell of a lot of such out till you have a regular line of dozens of traps set over several days. Then you just check and reset each day. If an area is non productive over several days MOVE then before you are starving.

The emotional meltdowns were bad...but are an indicator of a deeper problem.

Someone wondered how many of us have spent over 30 days alone in the wilderness. I know I have and with a whole lot less gear. There are a bunch of others on here who have done the same.

Personaly I wouldn't do one of those shows even if given the opportunity. Due to the requirements of other folks having control of my kit etc.

If it keeps types like him out of the bush this show should run 24/7 for generations.

Suckled the tit too long.

I have to give him a nod. How many people have gone over a month alone in the woods?

How many have gone a month without tv, or phone or a latte let alone in the bush.

Pure pusification. My great grandfathers generation was coined the greatest, damn straight he would role in his grave to see what we have become as a society.

Heinlein was right.

I dunno.... you guys are talking about not watching this show or that show...

I don't even know what shows you are talking about. I am one of those old holdouts with no cable or satellite, and have never had it.

Most of the time my life is too distracting to watch TV.

There are a lot of places that are not rich in game up here. But they are not the norm. A little research would get a guy dropped somewhere a bit more productive.
A lot of traps are needed, for sure, and you can go a while without seeing large game. Fish and birds, though, are plentiful in most areas of the Yukon and NWT.
Abiding by the game laws is smart if you're out hiking, etc., but when you're starving, it's time to eat. This guy is definitely whiny, but it is a realistic depiction of a guy lost in the woods. Not a show I need to see anymore of.

I only saw the last two episodes, so I didn't get what the guy's background was....but I am guessing he is an English city boy who didn't grow up in the woods (????).

Sounded like going to long without female companionship is what did him in!

Sounds like a dude that wanted to see if he could make it, as a side note it seems his rifle is an air rifle.

I didn't see that. He did have a shotgun as well that he killed the porcupine with.

you guys make some good points that ANYONE can be thrown into a survival situation.

on reviewing his trip, he tells of walking right up to moose. Moose = food. why did he not shoot the moose? Moose = food! a lot of food!

According to the show which I did watch, large game was out of season and against the law to shoot.
He was complaining how much better off he would be if he could shoot large game which he did see.
I suppose I wouldn't film myself poaching but in a so called survival situation feeding myself would take priority over game-laws.

I keep betting my wife that, when the commercial break is over, he'll be crying. So far I'm up $15 on her. Poor guy seemed to have had a mental melt-down almost from the get-go. Keep trying to watch it, because I use the money from my wife, but it's just depressing to watch. Unfortunate...this could have been a very interesting and entertaining show.

Yeah, but that is just it, its not a survival situation. As long as he is able to call it off at will, he can't justify shooting neither moose nor duck out of season.

I saw 3 episodes and I think he cried in all 3, I felt sorry for him and I cried too. Poor guy missed his girlfriend, how sad.

I can't say how he should have felt, I have never been alone in the Wild for 50 days, but we all know that if you were, those laws about what game you can take and when is out of the window (yes I know it was a show and he was not in a true Survival situation). At one point in the the Code Red show, he said if he could kill the big game he would have more than enough food, then later he gets down and out because he felt like he could not survive in a situation like this. Bottom line is in reality, he would have had plently of food to survive a long time, I would have been secure just knowing that. I would not have filmed myself crying like a little girl and going nuts, I would have spent that time showing the game that without restriction I could have killed and coming up with more ways to get food.

I agree.

If you watch the difference between him and Dick Proenke - it is night and day BECAUSE of the experience level. Isn't that the point? to see something different.

I liked the honesty - it was at least real.

i havent seen this show but it sounds a bit lame ill stick with survivor man which imho is the only show of its kind i can stand to watch

Well atlist you know didnt lie about sleeping in the hotel or having steak for dinner with all the trimmings. The man was real including his fear of bears... If he could have just gotten over his fear of bears and gotten some more food im sure he would have done fine. I been backpacking in the high sierra where in two days i seen mostly ravens and 2 chipmanks. It felt as if all the animals just left. 50 days of starvations would get to most people. All i want to say is that the show was real the man didnt cheat(killing animals off camera) Was it a good learning show as with Les, no its not. But real as it gets for someone stuck in the wild trying to make do. I also dont think the guy ever spend that long away from other people with no one to talk to. That got to him as well

Sasha

I tried to watch it. It was interesting at first to see his rollercoaster manic-depressive ride, but damn all that crying. My wife was like WTF? Everytime she would come in to see what I was watching, here is this guy just balling. I probably would cry too if I couldn't hit a squirrel with a shotgun... did anyone else see that? I would probably also cry at being that long without female companionship, but come on, was it neccessary to show it to that extreme? I guess they will never be able to create a realistic potrayal of a survival situation; they have to obey laws and such.
