Alone Season 2

From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to modify his shelter to better accommodate wind and rain. And I think he's smart enough to do that. I think he'll be alright.

I suspect the design is geared towards keeping a positive mindset. It's not a shelter (passive) it's a work station (active).

he's pretty darn sharp and would have to agree that he has a plan for bad weather (which might be arriving next episode :)); pulling the open side down to form a traditional A frame and then drop one or the other ends depending on wind direction would be one option- it's a large 20x20 tarp, lots of good ways to configure for storm worthiness

IMO there is nothing wrong with Mike's shelter. As was mentioned, it can easily be modified to deal with the incoming weather. Mike has shown himself to be more than resourceful in camp. Unfortunately I believe his undoing will be the longing for his wife, Barbara.

good points all, but the Yurt seems to me(who's a rookie bushcrafter) the all around best type of shelter for the weather and season.

I'd agree, sturdy sides and having fire inside would be advantageous- it's relatively early so I wouldn't be surprised to see some different shelters down the road; I think these guys (and gal) want to insure they get things well under control before investing too much time and energy on a bombproof shelter

If I remember correctly it was a ways into season 1 before we saw the yurt being constructed

I'm with marlyscanoe, I believe loneliness will be Mike's undoing... he has had a lot of sadness in his heart since childhood that will play out during his stay on Vancouver Island.

But his shelter will end up being a box kite as soon as the winter winds begin to blow; I'm sure he will do a good job of adapting to the situation.

If I were a betting man my money would be on Jose, he just seems to be so at home and in his element.

So... I am trying to catch back up but nothing recorded last week (have my DVR set to record all shows) and this coming Thursday seems to be Episode 4 for the new episode time slot per my guide. Did I miss something or did it skip a week? Very confused!

I think you can watch the episode on History channels website or the app. You didn't miss much tho. Kinda waste of time

I think I figured out the issue, history channel did not label it as episode four so in my list of recorded shows it got out of numerical order. I see it now

Good discussion everyone. I am new to this forum and not much of a knife guy, but this is the best discussion Alone2 that I have found.

Anyone else wondering if the contestants aren't allowed to build anything with a real roof? All are using tarp shelters, and the only person from season 1 not to build a tarp shelter was Alan with a one wall lean-to.

they can build any shelter they want; their included equipment (exclusive of the 10 items they choose) is a heavy duty 20x20' waterproof tarp- makes sense to include this as at least part of your shelter

Season 1 we got to see a open topped yurt (tarp was included in the build), I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a shelter that includes a fire inside

I would like to see Jose's "woodworking multitool" that he customized. Sounds like he converted blades into chisles, scorps, gouges etc. Hope to see it.
Also it would be great to see how Justin fares with just the multitool, ax and saw as opposed to a fixed blade. Justin's three tools should cover him fine especially if his ax is as sharp as can be. Mary Kate's ax was plenty sharp unfortunately.

I think even if Justin and Jose don't win, but are relatively successful, and the multitool pulls its weight, it could lead to a shift in thinking for quite a few people, and potentially some new designs. Just like its interesting to see how useful a large vs small knife is. Allan was very capable with that big blade of his, but you could tell he was very comfortable with it, and had used it quite a lot. Not seeing much blade work from everyone else at the moment.

Did pretty well, some with improved shelters and some protein intake.
Yeah I enjoyed seeing more of the shelters. Randy's looks like it could be pretty solid. I also really liked Nicole's and wouldn't mind sharing it with her to be honest. Justin's shelter doesn't look half bad either and you gotta love the bull kelp urinal haha!

I liked the idea of making fish stew rather than baking or frying the fish. An excellent way of getting all of the protein and fat available from the fish. If one were proficient at catching fish and as a result had a constant, bountiful supply it wouldn't matter. But when the supply is scarce it just makes sense to me. Did the one participant who caught the large salmon make use of the head and viscera, or were they discarded?

I enjoyed seeing more of the shelters. Nicole's showed evidence of long range thinking. And she said it stayed dry... I wish the contestants would film and explain more about their shelters and rational for how they built them. As well as fire pit and smoke escape. Last season 2 of the contestants did show that very well. Seeing them catch fish is encouraging. I would say that this year, they are doing better on average them last year at this day count. Moral seems higher. But they have had mild Temps and no storms yet...

Those two log shelters looked great. I would feel much more secure in that, plus they are better suited for setting up work areas.

I was also impressed with Nicole's skills at cleaning that fish with that big khukri.
