Alone Season 2

The flare and the pepper spray is the way to go then. If yelling doesn't work, doubtful the horn will either. Hell, in Colorado in some areas the bears come when they hear gunshots, hoping for a big score.

Wading through the regs for bear harvesting right now. http://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/sp...ng/hunting/regulations/2014-2016/region_1.pdf

I love bear hunting with my bow. I have 3 really nice rugs on my walls. Looks like there are a lot of big bears on the island.

Pict,

The list of items to select is bare bones. If I could, I like to know if there is one item that you wished you could had that would have made your stay significantly easier? Thanks!!

I'm really surprised that the bears were not impressed with the air horn, especially as the sound is totally out of the ordinary.

Watching the current episodes waiting for #4 I have really become impressed with the folks in the "game". Randy's friction fire is bada$$, Jose seems perfectly at home and his crafting is very inspiring. Tracy is way more than meets the eye. She let fish got from her net because she caught too many. Maybe she should have save a few but I guess she is confident in catching more with each tide change. Nicole also seems perfectly at home and excited to see the bears not frightened. I guess African safari guiding has scarier and more numerous predators (no disrespect to the predators on the island). Her eating Salicornia (sea beans/asparagus etc) showed knowledge of easy calories and nutrition in the wild.

Just watched the latest episode. Tough luck on tipping the water pot. I think we have all done that at one time or another. Myself, it was usually a meal that got dumped. And the participants' fishing luck is varying greatly. I see now why you didn't discuss setting the nets. I've never made one myself so you are definitely up on me with that skill. I have made a lot of fish traps though and know that placement is everything. Again, never dealt with great tidal fluctuations.

There are a few changes and adjustments I would make to my list but I can't get into that now. In the bush I normally carry my modified machete, a bushcraft knife, convex neck knife, and a SAK Farmer. It did seem like a hardship doing everything with one knife. I missed all of those other blades out there as I've carried that combo for about a decade.

I'm headed to the UP for some dirt time. I'll be back Sunday night.

Great episode last night. It was good seeing more of you pict. Mike has set up a woods mansion out there!

Anybody else cringe when folks used their axe carelessly this episode? Both Mike and Larry had some lapse in safety. Mike had his hand just like MK while splitting wood in camp (NICE CAMP!) and Larry with that longer handle axe while making his spear could have potentially hit himself the way he was working.

Really bummed about Tracy quitting. Her shelter looked grade A.

Mike should be concentrating his efforts on food and wood gathering not making drying racks, BBQ, hand washing gizmo. Cheesh. I don't see any one staying too long. Maybe Jose

I felt the same, definitely some close calls with the ax. I wonder if the other contestants are notified when and why someone tapped out? Might make them think twice.

Maybe he has enough food right now? Hasn't shown him getting food, but my bet is he has a supply and thus is able to work on his camp more than the others.

Like the cannon boom and picture in the sky like in Hunger Games...Sorry.

Looks like the big weather is coming next episode, that was a huge wake up to all the season 1 folks.

Haven't read al the comments yet, but here's what I think:

Pretty disappointed that Tracy left. She dealt with the bear almost perfectly (maybe a little slow, but this also gave the bears time to react if they had just stumbled upon her). This was also a huge opportunity for her to deal with her 'fierce aggression' (which was completely appropriate here, just some people are paralyzed by doing the right thing). But I can't blame her at all against a mother bear, nothing against her, just disappointed since she had potential.

Oh, Mike. Trying to chop your hand off like Mary, and then his toes right in line with that axe... Very few people do things properly though. Even at work the mentality is to just 'get 'er done.' Just keep moving because it takes time to step back and think of the safest and best way to fix something. People get injured in these jerry-built schemes and never question that they're 'working harder, not smarter' even when they claim the opposite.

Could see the disappointment with Dave. Looks pretty bad so I hope the food situation changes quickly.

Justin dealing with the situation through humour. Great idea. And I'm glad he is confirming what I said early on that he made his unorthodox gear choices based upon experience, smarts, and comfort. He seems confident out there.

Mike's camp looks very clean and nice. The OCD may help him if it doesn't wear him out.

Nicole's camp looks a little sloppy from the outside, but also potentially very warm and dry inside.

Dave's situation shows how a little bad luck can lead to mistakes through lack of clarity or more bad luck. And yet his gill net build is very impressive.

Larry pretty much the same, and then catching all those fish sent him into some Bill Murray cheer.

Nicole choosing to walk towards a mother bear. No, just no. That is asking for death as a mother bear will charge and fight from about three times the distance of other bears. And she looked to be about that distance. I think the bear knew something was there and then stood up when she realised it was approaching, trying to get a sniff. I don't know if the running was edited in or what, but very poor decision making there. Should have waited the bear out and then checked/moved the net (and maybe never put it there to begin with as it seemed like the same location she first saw the bear).

They aren't. It's all about how long they can last alone. Otherwise you'd have the last players counting down and tapping out right after the 2nd to last.

Didn't really see anything wrong with what Larry was doing. A little high, but given the work he didn't have much choice (could do it on mossy ground or lodge it between two trees). Generally he is using little force and the axe is either far away from him or on the opposite side of the spear. Pretty good, I think.

Agenda based research and apples to oranges...Making comparisons where firearms are used vs bear spray is faulty in its premise. In Dr Smiths research he uses bear encounters where the bear was just being a nuisance and got sprayed vs most firearms encounters where people will not shoot a bear under similar circumstances. Most of the firearm encounters are hunters sneaking through the woods and are extremely close to the bear and the bear is actually charging.

You just claimed the guy has an agenda and then sourced a mainstream tabloid and a far-right reactionary site...

The argument is not ridiculous, it is common sense. If you are surprised by a bear it is much easier to spray the bear than shoot it because of the spray's ease of use and area-of-effect. A gun is much better if you have seen it well before charging, can get ready to aim, and remain calm in the situation. A gun is simply not good in close quarters because you probably will not get a kill shot and the bear will either maim or kill you as it fights for its life and/or seeks revenge for what harmed it.

As well, the nature of the forest can make it very hard to get a clear shot on a bear. Spray creates a warning for the bear and a barrier for you, which allows you to escape or even grab your gun. It is much like a skunk, which bears are quite familiar with and try to avoid.

Just because someone says 'guns aren't the best thing ever in all situations' doesn't mean they are the enemy, nor even anti-gun.

Wrong. Not anti gun at all. Just pro the most effective tool to deal with bears.

Generally he is using little force and the axe is either far away from him or on the opposite side of the spear. Pretty good, I think.

Standing up while working his axe could easily hit either of his legs as he comes loose or just misses or skims off. He should kneel down so the axe will most likely hit the dirt not him. Old school Mors Kochanski stuff.

Kochanski also suggests that situations come up where the rules must be broken. For example, when the only chopping block available is too high you must be extra careful of the direction of swing. Or when you are on uneven ground chopping outside of handle length effectively becomes impossible, so you must adjust power and even direction of swing. Much like a knife you can cut towards yourself so long as there is a safe follow-through or a block, and you do it within reason.

Being aware of dangers does not mean that they always have to be avoided. Much like cutting overhead branches, Larry was using appropriate power and choking-up on the axe for safe follow-through. I suspect he is fairly experienced with the axe from what I saw. And none of this is to say that you are wrong, chopping on the ground would be a possibility, just a little hard for carving work.

Pict, thanks for the info. I can see where having the right tool makes everything easier rather than using a compromise for everything.

Mike is making a resort rather than a survival camp. I am worried that the mentioned a couple of times that he has to be active. I think when bad weather sets in and he has to hunker down and his only activity is mental he might hit the wall. He is quite innovative and I liked his treadle driven water spigot. Like other his ax handling made me cringe.

Everyone seems to be cooking where they live. Mary stated the smoke would destroy the smell of food but I don't buy that. I think Alan last season had it right, cook some distance away and dispose of scrapes in the water.

I didn't see Mary tapping out and I don't think she did either. I would like to get a look at her shelter, what was shown looks first class and skilfully made.
