Alone Season 2

Alan last year made a flat river stone; guessing almost everyone has a leather belt for stropping

I don't see any sharpening stone on many of the contestants lists. Mitch from Season 1 brought one. wondering exactly what Halfneck is wondering. what are they using for sharpening their tools?

That's what I'm wondering. Are they using a flat rock, stropping on a belt, sand, what?

Yes Halfneck! what are THEY using??? they should show that to us. Mitch from season 1 showed us that he charred tree bark to make it easier to catch a spark off his ferro rod. that was helpful info! it would be cool to see what they are using to maintain their gear in the field.

Yes. I believe what Alan was using in season 1 to sharpen his Condor kukri was what another contestant said was sand stone. He got a razor sharp edge with it. That particular kukri is made from 1080 carbon steel. I'm not sure that stainsteels would do well out there without a good sharpening tool. Hence, the reason why most contestants use high carbon steel knives - easier to maintain an edge with just about any flat stone.

On last night's episode, Nicole used a rock to sharpen her kukri.

Two more people down last night, five remain .....

Seems like all 7 players could have stayed longer but the solitude is the biggest obstacle. For the most part all are surviving just fine.
Mike was actually thriving to some degree.
Larry looked so happy about his new surroundings.
Randy was having sweat lodges and sitting around wet and i shorts with no worry of hypothermia.
Jose's boat project is impressive. Dave seemed to have gotten a spot that might have been less ideal than others as far as food/fishing goes.
Bad luck draw for Justin. I am sure he can deal with it but holy crap I have never seen the water table rise so much vertically like that. He thought the initial ground water was a problem.
I am rooting for Nicole she seems very at peace and in her element. Of course we are rooting for Dave too!!

BTW Justin's down bag choice has finally caught up with him. We all knew it will. No reason to use down in that environment.

i was rooting for randy. after that rough start (burning his firesteel, neglecting to fish) he seemed to be making a comeback. sad to see him tap. i guess its all in the mind.

Jose is my pick. he seems so calm and just focused on spending his time and energy correctly. I really hope Dave/Pict finds some fish. if he does.....then his whole outlook will change. I can't wait. Jose, Nicole, Dave..... GOOD LUCK DAVE!!! TIGHT LINES!!!

Why was Justin boiling drinking water when it was raining outside?

I'm going to ask a crazy question here but.......is anybody else having trouble viewing the episode? History's viewer tends to be a bit wonky anyways but.....it goes to the page where it acts like it's going to load the episode and just sits there. I notice that there hasn't been a lot of discussion about last night's episode so I'm wondering if other people are having issues too. If not, I'll eventually watch it. I just hope the issue is lined out cause I want to get caught up! :)

Maybe for a warm drink!?! Its cold and raining, couldnt hurt to warm up from the inside too!

And maybe just to do "something". Why have a fire when you don't need it? Because it keeps your mind busy and it's and activity.

The solitude is taking a big toll now.

I missed this week's episode but it sounds like I was correct on Randy being next to tap out. Who else did so and why? I'll check today to see if the family's tv recorded it like it was supposed to.

Mike tapped. He by far had the most accessorized camp even made dice to play games with. Just missed his wife and decided that was more important. Randy went out on a high note. He basically realized he wanted to live as close to this experience as possible just not alone. He inadvertently quoted a Chris McCandless quote; "happiness is best when shared". He and Mike had pretty much won every aspect except the waiting to be last part. I applauded both of their exits. Heck Randy had a sweat lodge to help him decide, pretty cool.

Mike? I guess I place too much emphasis on their HC bios:

Mike has spent the majority of his adult life learning and teaching wilderness survival skills. He served his country during the Reagan years as a SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) instructor in the U.S. Air Force. In 1988, Mike launched a faith-based survival and rescue training program called Wilderness Way Adventures, where he still instructs men, women and children from all walks of life in the ancient and enduring art of wilderness survival. He is excited about the opportunity to showcase his skills and beliefs while filming himself surviving alone on northern Vancouver Island. In doing so, Mike hopes to discover character traits and attributes within himself that will enable him to harmonize well in the wild and will empower him to be a better person.
