Alone Season 2

One suspects that the directors are editing with an eye toward emphasizing the "alone" part.

Of course. They also know the outcome I suspect. If the pyschological aspects are going to cause folks to turn in the towel, it's good to emphasize that as the show should be a continuum.

Side note; Did you guys see the huge pile of yellow rope Nicole had? I would love to see more about the debris on the beach.
For some reason I am a beach comber at heart that and the story of Robinson Crusoe and how he survived always intrigued me as a child.
Looks like a ton of useful debris like Mike's new boat. I would like to see more improvisation.

Nicole continues to impress me. I gotta be honest and say at the beginning I thought she would be one of the first to leave. Totally wrong on that one! She's absolutely killing it with her gill net; not only catching little fish but really nice 10+ pound salmon! And yeah her extensive knowledge on edible plants on that island is huge. Her shelter looks warm and cozy and she has a great attitude out there. She's made a fan out of me for sure.

Gadgetgeek, very interesting post that you've made!

I think Randy is gone. Once you start "deciding" when you should quit, you've already tapped out. Once the chink in the armor occurs it only widens.

I have to admit at first I was not impressed with Nicole and thought she was a lightweight that would quickly tap out. Not only does she have good skills and situated in a good location but she has so far been emotionally stable. She showed grief about the loss of her son and missing her children but it was in a controlled fashion and an issue that appears to have been dealt with and closed. I like her shelter and she seems to have gone further and made it a home.

I think the short tempered guy is on the way out. He spent way too long in a nonproductive location and has now consumed a lot of his reserves and mental energy. He doesn't seem to enjoy the outdoors and wants to battle it. I think is only motivation is the prize and that won't keep him there.

Larry's new location is much better however I can't figure out why he would film himself cussing and complaining unless he knew the producers would take this tape and give him some air time. Everything he does is a struggle, he complains about the mouse totally destroying his other camp and equipment but did not produce any damaged goods. Mentally he is stressed, complained about being an electrician and having to go to work for many more years doing same job, so if he wins this will change his life. Building his new shelter was a pain for him and he wasted much energy recutting poles. Yup the alone part is catching up to many of our contestants.

It looks like Larry just needs to lubricate his conversation with a lot of profanity.

I'm kinda the same way; don't hold it in or you'll get an ulcer!

I thought Nicole was very capable from the start based on her education, background and realistic mindset. As a very classy lady I can see how she can easily be confused with the norm at first look. I placed her just behind Mike with Jose as most likely. I think I put Justin fourth only because of his attitude and physical abilities - but I find myself questioning his strategies - with Randy at fifth simply because of his love for nature and his youth. Never underestimate the power of youth - resilience and not knowing any better. :)

However, I find myself pulling for Dave and Larry a lot more as the season progresses. Their "real life" issues being something I understand on a personal level and was lucky enough to leave behind me for good.

I put quotations on real life as some posted real life with regards to this society. To me there's never been anything more real than nature itself and society growing farther and farther away from it as it "advances" is by design. Greed being the prime motivator. Today most of us are chasing and stressing for the proverbial dangling carrot; the illusions of the corporation world and those new beliefs that are the new measuring stick for our self-worth, and by accepting this we are losing exactly that.

Of course this lifestyle has its positives. This is not an all negative, one-sided belief. However, some may see my comment and think it's wrong, very negative and maybe even Un-American. I'm anti-corporate control and see this as the truth. That is why I love this show so much. It takes me away; it relaxes me while still having the luxuries that this decadent society provides. :D

my wife says i beep as much as larry when we go camping,i really don't realize i am doing it so much,

For time spent in the woods alone...how many folks have a job that will give them a month off, let alone more?
How many married people have spouses or kids who would be fine with traipsing off for a month or more at a time?

Excellent question! I am in one of the few professions that will allow the schedule to be out for up to three months in one stretch, if I organize it correctly! I teach!

However, ppl like to think we have "summers off!" Not true unless the teacher is well organized and has all their credits up to date and other training taken during the school year! This summer I have three training seminars/classes plus two other meetings breaking up the 83 days off between the school years!

My goal is to eventually be able to take up to 6-8 weeks in row each summer and get out on my own! I can't think of many professions that would allow one to do that!

I owned a seasonal construction and service company so had a few months off nearly every winter when finances allowed. SOmetimes I had to work other construction jobs to make ends meet, but late fall and winter were prime outdoor times for me. Few of my friends had such luxury, so more often than not, my "outing" was solo.

Here a another question David. while I did have a time when I didn't have much to eat for two or three days. I never were at a point where most of the contestant are at after a couple of weeks.
If you have a very limited amount of food. Would you rather eat it before you go to sleep. In the morning to start the day. Or in the middle of the day?
What would you the reasoning behind it?

I wish I could go and do it for a month or two but have way too much to lose if I just walk away.

In those situations, getting some extended time out there does seem feasible. :)

If I had a situation like that, I could see getting out for 2 week excursions from time to time; beyond that, that wife would likely have something to say!

If I lived on my own, and could arrange the time, I could see a month-long outing being really rejuvenating.
Beyond that, I'm not sure. A month is about the longest I've ever gone without human contact.

Excellent question and I don't have to reference my time on Alone to give my answer. In a survival situation when you have limited food resources, assuming you aren't up against spoilage, you have to eat them when you need to eat them. That does not mean you eat them when you are hungry, you will be hungry all the time. You eat when you have to put a high demand on your body like moving forward, building a camp, etc.

The last thing you do is try to keep to some kind of breakfast/lunch/dinner schedule. Imagine that food as gas for a car you can't compltely shut off. It can sit and idle or it can drive up a hill. Make sure it has enough gas to get to the top of the hill. When you are starving, a meal makes a huge difference in your overall energy level and that directly translates into a higher level of performance to get the job done. If you have high calorie food available then eat it before you have to exert yourself, not when you are in camp and able to rest. The only serious break from that is in extreme cold when you have to consume food to create body heat while you rest.

If you can push on through the hunger AND get the job done, then you may want to work at the pace your fasting allows. The first three days of working while fasting you have a severe headache and alot so hunger pain. That all goes away. You will feel like crap but if you are still able to get things done, it isn't an emergency. (it really, truly sucks) If you can't get the job done or the hunger is affecting your mental state and you can't motivate yourself to get things done, that may constitute a food emergency and a portion of your EMERGENCY rations. Pain and discomfort from hunger is not an emergency until it prevents you from accomplishing the task of survival.

All that is my OPINION.

I'm guessing most of the people on here are like me. I'd get lonely after a short time, but if I could have a canine companion, then my time on the Island would be extended greatly. No better way to work through a problem, than talking to your dog.

Actually, that month was just after I had sold my iguana.
Had sold off my books, games, and movies, and had no cable. Threw out the television too.
Jobs had dried up in town, and I was trying really hard to avoid moving.
No computer either...hadn't owned one up to that point.
Just sat around eating the food that was in the apartment.
It was a really boring month. :D

Ended up having to move anyway, and it all worked out for the best, but at least I learned I can stand to be around myself with no distractions. :)

I think some of Nicole's gear was thought out really well. Her Axe is a splitting axe, and her Silky Saw would be perfect for large fire wood and as she pointed out getting dead branches higher up in a tree. I don't like her knife at all but the other cutting tools are great.

Rick, I see what you are saying but remember you'd have had a different knife made. She is used to that style, but adapted it to her, rather than the other way around.

Just realized that they are using chalk bags as possibles bags on their belts, and possibly foraging bags.... seems so obvious as a solution, yeah a rolly-polly is good, but chalk bags are cheap... might have to think about adapting that into my method, it'd make a great gorp hauler!

I think the chalk bags are to hold the emergency beacon they carry with them 24/7. Dave can you confirm?
