Alone Season 2

Good episode the other night. Nicole is just killin' it out there! Her knowledge of the flora out there is also proving to be invaluable, even inspiring myself to learn more about edible and medicinal plants (definitely my weak point). She has a lot of guts when it comes to bears too, especially compared to previous contestants. I think its fair to say she could tap out any time and still have earned everyone's utmost respect.

Justin, who I chose to win it all from the very beginning (and am still standing by that), is showing a lot of fortitude. Many people criticize his endeavors and think they are foolish but I don't think so. It only seems to make him stronger. He has some serious mettle. Go sniper go!!!

If Nicole's luck holds out and she doesn't get injured, I see no reason why she can win the thing. She seems pretty content and can deal with the solitude pretty well. So far, food has not been an issue for her. I hope the black bears continue to keep their distance from her.

When they showed equipment the contestants were taking Nicole had that huge frying pan, I'm thinking are you serious, now I know why, that lady is a harvesting machine, feel bad about Dave starving and she is kicking fish out of her net. Now she finds a stream salmon are spawning in to boot. I guess seeing that large black bear would indicate there is food in this area. the way she is going now she may have go on a diet when she gets home. :)

New preview is up on the History website. Looks like Dave gets a crab and Larry starts a war on mice. Good to see Dave getting some food. Larry providing the #@$# entertainment again. :D

I feel poor Larry may have a breakdown due to this show! It has taken a seemingly mild mannered guy and is driving him mad week by week.

They are all nuts to not take the slingshot and 6 arrows. Not having a projectile weapon is a recipe for disaster, sooner or later.

Considering the fact that the guy who won last year didn't bring the bow and arrow choice, and no one had a disaster due to no projectile weapons, perhaps you are the one who is nuts. ;)

that's correct. Mitch from season 1. he had mold growing on everything....His boots, his gear. he went hunting one time on camera and saw nothing. side note.....Nicole hit the jackpot with locations. she walked up river and saw Salmon just spawning.

As far as I'm concerned Nicole's random pick of the ten spots available was basically a winning $500000 Powerball ticket. Food is coming to her with zero effort so far which has given her a huge advantage over everyone else both in caloric and psychological edge. No one is even close at getting enough food to last long enough for her salmon run to end and the green edibles to give into to winter weather. The lack of food is decreasing everybody else's mental ability to stop from sinking into despairing thoughts. Jose seems be handling his lack of food better than the rest even though physically he is looking very skinny and his face is showing signs of stress hat he might not be telling the camera. His complete fixation on some utopic "salmon run" in some unknown valley stream seems to have taken on the value of some sort of religious quest as a means to his "salvation". This seems to give him the ability to keep going mentally though he is physically withering away. Considering how much time and calories he is putting into this boat, that one stray branch or rock would sink, is looking very irrational.

LOL! True. But I'm definitely nuts so I'm not laughing at alewn, just the statement.

Also, Nicole certainly hit the half mil jackpot on the spawning salmon stream - the obvious reason she sees bears all the time. That aside, her knowledge of chemicals in the plants for that happy go lucky edge is helpful but her intrinsic demeanor seems to be crushing (for now) that of the male contestants. Food food food...or maybe just editing?

Here's an interesting test study for everyone in their free time:

Spend half of 'Tomorrow' sitting in front of the tech devices, barely eating, and stating your opinions on the internet.

'The Day After Tomorrow', drive to your closest national forest/state park, wildlife sanctuary or government appointed Wilderness Area and go hiking for 2-6 hours with a bunch of healthy food in your pack; get that heart rate up and suck in those real antidepressants pouring out of the flora.

If the latter doesn't make you 'Happier', then your psyche's been warped, and perhaps I'm only half nuts. ;)

Have fun out there!

Nicole definitely got the best of the spots in terms of food. This is contributing to her positive attitude in my opinion. She actually comes across as just too happy to me. Almost reminds me of some bi-polar patients I've dealt with during manic phases. Makes me wonder how she'd do if she was struggling with food like some of the others.

The theme as time goes on:

Boredom is certainly not an evil to be taken lightly: it will ultimately etch lines of true despair onto a face. It makes beings with as little love for each other as humans nonetheless seek each other with such intensity, and in this way becomes the source of sociability.
Arthur Schopenhauer

In contrast:
A man can be himself only so long as he is alone, and if he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom, for it is only when he is alone that he is really free. Arthur Schopenhauer

So why is it that out of freedom each one of us creates his own prison? Saddleing our lives with seemingly endless commitments and obligations that barley allow us to sleep peacefully at night?

We've seen a lot of very skilled folks bail- not for lack of shelter, water, fire or even food, but because they had enough. A typical survival scenario is measured in days, if not in hours. This show after a week or two, is a lot less about survival and more about wilderness living and ultimately how comfortable folks are living this life- alone.

If you want to look under the covers this show will highlight a truth that Schopenhauer had written about along time ago. These people are coming into contact with an inner truth that has been concealed by a veil of denial. You can gaze at the current state of so called "civilized" humanity as unconsciously participating in this denial. The denial of the truth of our condition, and as much as we try to conceal it the faster we run towards what we fear the most. We perpetuate more "evil" onto each other than nature itself could inflict on any animal. Great show!

"The pleasure in this world, it has been said, outweighs the pain; or, at any rate, there is an even balance between the two. If the reader wishes to see shortly whether this statement is true, let him compare the respective feelings of two animals, one of which is engaged in eating the other.

The best consolation in misfortune or affliction of any kind will be the thought of other people who are in a still worse plight than yourself; and this is a form of consolation open to every one. But what an awful fate this means for mankind as a whole!
We are like lambs in a field, disporting themselves under the eye of the butcher, who chooses out first one and then another for his prey. So it is that in our good days we are all unconscious of the evil Fate may have presently in store for us — sickness, poverty, mutilation, loss of sight or reason.

No little part of the torment of existence lies in this, that Time is continually pressing upon us, never letting us take breath, but always coming after us, like a taskmaster with a whip. If at any moment Time stays his hand, it is only when we are delivered over to the misery of boredom.

But misfortune has its uses; for, as our bodily frame would burst asunder if the pressure of the atmosphere was removed, so, if the lives of men were relieved of all need, hardship and adversity; if everything they took in hand were successful, they would be so swollen with arrogance that, though they might not burst, they would present the spectacle of unbridled folly — nay, they would go mad. And I may say, further, that a certain amount of care or pain or trouble is necessary for every man at all times. A ship without ballast is unstable and will not go straight.

Certain it is that work, worry, labor and trouble, form the lot of almost all men their whole life long. But if all wishes were fulfilled as soon as they arose, how would men occupy their lives? what would they do with their time? If the world were a paradise of luxury and ease, a land flowing with milk and honey, where every Jack obtained his Jill at once and without any difficulty, men would either die of boredom or hang themselves; or there would be wars, massacres, and murders; so that in the end mankind would inflict more suffering on itself than it has now to accept at the hands of Nature."

they only lasted 7 weeks, too and would certainly have starved in the winter, since they had no stash of food to get them thru once everything iced up, was covered in snow, etc. Up there, you gotta kill a bear or 2 and salt cure the meat, when you come so late in the season, dont have all season to prep for the winter.

I said a slingbow, not a wooden bow. They have the option of a slingshot, so just modify it to shoot arrows some of the time. The fact that fools don't know to build a tree platform, bait in the bears and arrow them from the safety of the platform does not mean that the concept/tools are inadequate or foolish. it just means that they are inept.

wth would these wusses do if they had to go off to ww2 and not see their loved ones for 4 years, hmmm?

It's not about missing the loved ones. That's there but war gives people meaning and purpose and they are surrounded by men that become even closer than family. The guy that tapped tonight was military. He spent days on end in holes with his buddies doing nothing but observing. But he was not truly alone for any extended period, and he always had his military family. Justin might of realized that he is much closer to being one of these vets that kill themselves then he was aware of. That his mission to save other vets is truly a mission to save himself. If he came close to this truth in his solitude best to head back to the outpost before you find out too much about yourself. Good for him, he got out with a new mission and perspective in life...

WWII ended over 70 years ago. Did you mean to say Iraq? There have been plenty of war veterans on this show, including the guy that went home before nightfall on day one because he heard bears and went running through the woods to the coastline like a maniac as if a demon were right at his heels...it was like Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness and it was hilarious. In case you were 10 beers deep when you started watching tonight, Justin himself is a war veteran.....

don"t think they are allowed o kill the bears.

Exactly. The contestants have to abide by the Fishing & Game laws that the residents of Vancouver Island follow themselves (as we clearly learned during the wildlife meeting at the beginning of this season). Therefore, they can only kill a bear/cougar/wolf in self defense, not a bait & trap food source...or arrow...or "slingshot."
