alright all you tactical folder experts...

If you already own a GB, you just need to toughen up and start carrying it! If you are worried about it slipping out of a pocket, take some of the $150 or so you were going to spend on a lesser knife and get a good pouch made for it to match your duty gear.

BM AFCK The acronym says it all, Advanced Folding Combat Knife

Wrong.

They changed the name. It's now officially, "The Advanced Folding Camping Knife."

I kid you not.

off the top of my head, large sebenza, bm afck, al mar sere2000, practically any microtech

It's interesting the way this seems to be going. You have your sebenza elitists, and you have your blue collar guys saying AFCK, CQC7, Cuda Maxx. Who's right? I dunno. Keep it going. What makes a sebenza so valuable? Seriously, let me know. What does it do that a Microtech or Al Mar can't do. I'm not trying to be funny! Let's hear it!!

imho the best tactical production folder is the emerson SOCFK w/the tanto blade, its priced right too ($139.99) and a good value at $250. ya can get them at www.tacticaledge.com, if they have any of them, they are kinda hard to come by sometimes. they are also waved, prob the cheapest waved emerson. and a GREAT handle too. my personal EDC, and has been for a few months. my fav of all my productions, a SOCFK w/green G10 and black tanto blade - the bomb imho!!! looks/functions/carries GREAT, ya cant beat them imho, like it much better than my CRK seb.........

my #2 choice would be a BM AFCK, axis lock pref, the 806S-D2 is my personal fav of the line, but a good liner lock (ie 800S) is great too. opens almost as fast as a wave w/practice

#3 would have to go to the cammilus cuda maxx, great lock, light weight, loooong blade, and priced right too (about $150 or so)also opens fast w/practice

#4 would be a BM stryker, i like the chisel edge mods, but thats just me

#5 would be a spyderco police SS model w/SE blade

greg

PS - the SOCFK really is my EDC, and i could choose from among crawford kaspers, DDR maxx, and other customs, the only one i MIGHT like better is my crawford ti KFF.......the SOCFK is just a helluva knife

I'm with ya on the SOCFK, but when I tried to order one, their website got screwy. Perhaps I'll give them a call and see whassup.
Thanks, keep the suggestions coming. Keep in mind I wanna hear YOUR opinions.

strider1973,

What you're looking for is a Microtech.

Specifically. . .a LCC, or a SOCOM or a Amphibian !

You'll play hard at doing any better than Microtech. Fantabulous quality, light in the hand, razor sharp, edge retention is superb, built tactical, looks tactical. . .cuz they are tactical !

got an older SOCOM monday, and must agree its a winner, kinda hard to find though imho

strider1973, I am not with the Sebenza crowd. I have owned two of them over the years and to be honest the ergonomics suck big time. Feel like a square box in my hand. I got rid of them pronto which is very easy around here. Despite the ergonomics, the Sebenzas lock-up like a dang bank vault, and they just scream quality. The ergonomic thing is a complaint about the Sebenza you will hear on the boards from time to time, but I think we are in the minority.

Ok, my top three picks that want break the bank in this particular order. Almar SERE 2000, AFCK, and the Chinook and yes I have owned all three of them. It used to be the AFCK in the #1 position, but the Almar SERE 2000 took that position once I got one in my hands. The Almar is an almost custom made folder. The grinds of the spear point blade are flawless. Evidently, the grinds must have been done with a laser because they are just too perfect. The action is as smooth or smoother than any folder that I have ever owned. Thick stainless liners, and it has passed all the spine whacking tests that I have performed with flying colors. It is one heavy duty folder.

Also, I have owned an Emerson CQC7 with wave and the Commander. Of the two, I liked the CQC7 the best. From a quality and bang for the buck stand point, the Almar SERE 2000 wins hands down in my opinion.

These threads tend to get filled with the wannabe Mall-Ninja type stuff...But I'll sidestep the suspiciousness...The best Tactical folder was designed by one of the best...Duane Dieter, and is the MOD Duane Dieter CQD...

And yet another vote for the SOCOM (Elite preferably). Emerson SOCFK gets kudos also. BM722 is one of my favourites also.

Good props for the Al Mar SERE. What does everyone else think. I know there are a bunch of Emerson Usual Suspects out there (myself included), howsabout the anti-emerson bubbas. Let's hear it! The good, the bad, the ugly, I wanna hear it all.

I see nobody has mentioned CRKT products at all. Well, I will say that the best bang for your buck tac folder must be the CRKT Ryan model 7. I personally have had this as EDC for about 2 months now. It fits my hand like a glove and I use it in the kitchen extensively. It is easy to sharpen and holds an edge reasonably well. It locks up extremely well and the liner is strong enough for my spine whack tests. The LAWKS is a great feature for "Extreme" use. I have removed the huge thumb studs as I prefer the nice large hole. At around 40-50 US Dollars, you just cannot beat it.

I used to carry CRKT M-16 police model ($50) and it really worked very well. It was very tough. Its beat up but still works great. I bought a Strider GB, and now carry it on my Duty belt. I was afraid of losing it (as you said $350), so I bought a SOE sheath, and put it next to my cuff case. IMO, if you have a GB, use it. Good luck, Reagan

So far the only tactical mall nija knife mentioned is the MOD QCD.

Gollnick please tell me you are joking?

The BM AXIS AFCK is the knife that you are looking for but MIcrotech's Socom E and Amphibian would also be excellent choices.

I have `All the emerson's i have seen (inclueding mine) are not nearly as good as Benchmades and Microtechs, they are well designed but their mechanical quality falls short.

The Camillus CUDA Max is a beautiful knife, but it is just a bit too large.

#1) Spyderco Chinook is indestructable.
#2) Al Mar Sere, somewhat more ergonomic, but still built like a tank and wicked sharp in VG-10!
-both of these knives are quite heavy and bulky (7.5 oz, 6 oz.)
#3) I have no beef with Emerson Knives lock up, all were solid, but I (my opinion only folks) absolutely hate that chisel grind. If you want something to poke holes with, get another one.
#4) Someone said earlier, that if you are afraid of losing the Strider, you probably don't want to invest in a Sebenza either. It's an excellent knife, but I agree, the ergonomics are not that comfortable for me.
#5) Any of the zytel handled lockbacks (I actually prefer the simple lockback to a poor liner lock). If you lose it or break it, replace it for $50.

Just my .02

I have the sere 2k and everything said about it is true. One other feature that drew me to it is the low riding pocket clip. The action is very smooth with no blade play and the blade sits dead center between the liners. Check out this review. http://www.jungletraining.com/almar.htm

If I had a strider I would probably carry that. ;)

For the requirement you describe, the Emerson Commander makes a lot of sense - it's not as good as an Axis AFCK or Microtech LCC for opening boxes or halving your PB&J, but I would argue the Commander blade design - and the grind - make it a better "backup" combat folder than either of those knives.

As to Emerson quality control, I haven't seen the problems, but that doesn't mean much.

After going through a half dozen Benchmade/Spyderco designs - all of them good knives - my EDC choice is a Mini Commander - chisel edge (sharp mofo), liner lock, 154CM, partial serrated (gasp), warts and all.

Emerson Commander, Microtech LCC, Spyderco Military, or BM Axis AFCK, in that order, all around $150.

As an aside, have you considered a small fixed blade? A BM Nimravus, Busse Assault Shaker or Killer B would make great choices for your requirements.

I've never actually touched an SOCFK, but it too looks like an excellent EKI choice - and you can get it with a spear point, V grind (cheers erupt!)if you don't like that ornery chisel edge....
