alright all you tactical folder experts...

OK, something else in this thread is bothering me:). We are talking about a piece of equipment that one just might be staking ones life on. With that in mind, why wouldn't you want the absolute best you could get? Quality doesn't usually come cheaply. Yes it would suck to lose an expensive knife. But it would suck worse to have an inferior piece of equipment fail you when you need it most. Would you carry a sidearm that was prone to jamming? A rifle that was prone to mis-fires? A light that flickers?

Paul, just my opinion ...

Well, driving is pretty dangerous, and a much more direct threat to my life, statistically. Should I be driving a mercedes, even though it's beyond my budget? No, I have to balance all my various safety needs against my overall budget. Frankly, as far as managing *realistic* threats to my life, I'm probably much more justified in spending a ton on my car and home security than I am for a knife.

In any case, you can absolutely positively get a competent defensive knife for $50, so I feel your argument about having to spend a lot so you don't get the equivalent of a "misfire" is a bit of a red herring. Anything more, you're paying more for very-rapidly diminishing returns. Now, I think the Axis AFCK is the best answer, period, regardless of price or production vs. custom. But regardless, I think the individual is in the best position to judge what tradeoffs he has to make in order to meet his overall safety requirements within his budget. As long as the equipment performs reliably and competently -- and you absolutely don't have to spend more than $50 for that -- anything else is gravy, and subject to tradeoffs versus more pressing concerns.

Just my opinion!

Joe, I agree with you 100%. You DO NOT have to spend alot to get alot. There are some GREAT knives in the $50 range.
My statements were made solely for the sake of seeing the various responses. There are many people who preach buy the best, only to turn around and say that they can't bring themselves to use such an expensive item. If you can swing the price, by all means use it. If not then buy the best you can afford.

The Axis folders ARE the best, or at least are among the best. You can spend a lot more, but you cannot get a more reliable folding knife, in my opinion.

The CUDA Maxx is an awesome specimen as well if you want to carry something that big.

The bottom line is that ALL of the knives listed here are excellent quality knives that you won't go wrong with. Go with what you like.

I'm going to jump in and also say that you should go and checkout the Spyderco Chinook. Pick one up, try different grips. Great ergos on this one. Don't worry about the "old time" lock-back; Spyderco rates it for MBC (Martial Blade Craft). Also, I think James Keating knows something about blade use;)
Something slightly lighter: Massad Ayoob from Spyderco
If weight and cost are a real issue then the FRN Spydies are worth a look.
But, if you like Stiders, why not a Buck/Strider?

ALOT OF GREAT RESPONSES. ALL ARE APPRECIATED. I ORDERED A SHEATH FOR THE GB. THAT'S THE FIRST THING. HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY GOOD KNIVES BOUGHT UP...WELL...A FEW MORE KNIVES NEVER HURT.

BASED ON RECOMMENDATIONS...PROBABLY GONNA GET THE AFCK, AND A SPYDERCO MILITARY. OR MAYBE AN AL MAR. OR PERHAPS AN EMERSON. POSSIBLY I'LL GET A...

AH, YOU GUYS KNOW HOW IT GOES. ONCE YOU POP, YOU CAN'T STOP.

FOR THE FUN OF IT...KEEP THE THREAD GOING. THE RESPONSES HAVE BEEN GREAT.
