Alright... I want a secondary EDC that's INSANELY-STUPIDLY SHARP!!!

This knife I speak of can't be more than $150-175, and just because of personal preference, CAN'T be any AUS metal. Other than that... I just want to ability to friggin shave with it.

Neither my CRKT M16-13M or BM 9130 AutoStryker Taurus models are that sharp.

I like symmetrical-style knives, and I want something that will hold it's rediculouso-sharp edge for awhile. Sharpening is of no worry (I mean timewise) either.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Cleary

P.S. Scalpel/razor sharp...

Interesting you mention the Maxx Stilleto... I made a post about that knife vs. the KA-BAR Dozier folder.

And yes, I would like a folder... is the Maxx rediculously sharp though. I think Joe Talmadge said the Bowie version would be sharper because of the grind angle is like 10 compared with the stilleto's 15 (example, might be wrong, but I know the stilleto's was less).

What do you think? Any more suggestions in the mean-time?

The easy answer is the Spyderco Calypso Jr. in ZDP-189. It's sharper than any knife you own, and I don't even know what you own :) It's out of production now, but a few dealers still have stock, so you'll have to search. At something like 64-65 Rc, it's strong enough to take a VERY thin sharp edge, and Spyderco took advantage of that. Not really a self-defense knife, and not symmetric, but as sharp as you'll get.

I didn't quote angles on the Maxx, but I've handled several of both the bowie and stilleto version, and the bowie is easily noticeable sharper due to the edge angle, which simple geometry predicts anyway.

BTW, no symmetric-style knife will be super sharp, if you want top and bottom grinds that are also symmetric. You'll need to lose the symmetric restriction if you want sharp.

Alright... good answer, but... after looking at the Caly already, I'm not a big fan of the design. Are there any others that use the ZDP-189... even out of the Spyderco line?

Any of the spyderco's in VG10 can be made 'oops, what's that trickling down my arm? Blood? I didn't even feel the cut. Damn I love this knife!', sharp.

Lone Wolf Loveless Drop point. Because of the edge geometry, I've been able to get that one 'insanely' sharp. Street price? $132. Cut circles around the brand new Sebenza I bought. 154CM, btw.

Yeah, I've been wanting to get some of the VG-10 action for sometime, I just can't find one I like.

What is the LV-02 on the Loveless blade? What is tha compare with?

Now, if Kershaw plays their cards right, and actually releases the Leek in the S30V... well, that would solve my problem.

Any more suggestions?

I have no idea what the LV-O2 blade is. My Loveless DP folder is 154CM, my favorite steel. They include the cryo treatment on the blade when heat treating. You can tell the difference.

THeir are alot of knives out their that meet those specs. my personal fav would be the BM mini-skirmish which came extremely sharp. you may also want to just invest in a spyderco sharpmaker.

Microtech Wallet Knife. CPM154CM, extremely scary sharp, and super concealable to boot! Not sure about the grind angles. I was torn between this and the Buck/Strider/Tarani Police utility knife in ATS-34 as my EDC, but because it's more "tactical", I went with the Buck.

My current favorite "innocent looking, but vicious" knife is the rather "cute" looking Spyderco Cricket, yes the blade's less than 2" long, but the "Reverse-S" style "Hawkbill-ish" blade cuts like a much bigger blade.

i just love that little hook at the front of the blade, makes short work of envelopes, packing tape, boxes, i haven't even come *close* to finding it's limit, most of the cutting force seems to be centered in the first upward curve of the reverse s, once you sink the point of the blade in, you can just pull cut, or rip back and it seperates matter very efficiently

and on top of that, it's a VG-10 blade that can take a wickedly scary sharp edge....

and even better, women think it's a "cute" blade (a.k.a. "Chicks dig it!") ;)

How can you resist an innocent looking tiny steel handled knife that almost seems to be *smiling* at you (as it contemplates the quickest way to draw blood), Crickets have an evil tendency to bite, you really need to keep your eye on them, they *love* to give "love bites"

Caly ZDP 189. That knife comes abolutely stupid sharp and is easy to keep that way. It's also light in the pocket.;)

The Spyderco Salt I or Pacific Salt may work. I've been using the Salt I at home and, once, made multiple cuts into cardboard boxes with it. The edge was still functional and shaving sharp afterwards, I still sharpened/ stropped it to original Spyderco sharp. Sharpening/ stropping took about 5 minutes and it was 'stupid' sharp (nicked finger and blood flowed nicely).

I guess I don't know what you mean by that. Are you saying that a symmetrically ground blade won't be as sharp as, say, a chisel grind?

MacTech man... I'm with you there, the Cricket is awesome. You've probably inspired a good decision, and I'll probably add that to my list of what to pick up.

Thanks,
Cleary

P.S. Warden, by symmetrical, I meant by a knife that is "equal-looking" in appearence, not the grind. But thank you for enquiring...

You're not Joe Talmadge.

BTW, I think I know what he's trying to say...a saber grind won't cut as well or be as sharp as a full-height grind. Vertical and lateral symmetry vs. horizontal symmetry.

Do you want something big or rather small? I can't stop thinking about BM 710HS. Buy one (I guess there are still availaible some although hard to get) and reprofile it to 15 degree. M2 steel can be made scary sharp.
