Altoids Smalls - survival kit blade

RSK_Mk5_300w_DS.jpg

not sure why you want a folder, but I was also going to suggest the CRKT Ritter RSK Mk5.

Pefect for what you are looking for imo, if you would consider a tiny fixed blade instead of a folder.

Its crazy, and i have a proper regular survival tin kit.. but want to create a very small fire starting kit that will fit the "Altoids Smalls" for my own entertainment while the stupid canadian snow melt! :D

I'll put a small firesteel, off course, and a super small but hopfully good knife. The point of my question is.. what would be the best super small knife (folder prorably) that would actually fit inside that little tin ?

Any suggestion are welcome and thank you for your time

I just reread this - if you want a very small fire starting kit, forget the firesteel and use a modified lantern lighter.

I prefer a small barebones survival kit, a last-ditch kit, so this is what I've came up with.

If you scroll down, you will see the modified lantern lighter. Works like a charm.

i discarded the CRKT Ritter RSK Mk5 just because the tin i decided to use.. any bigger tin can.. i would be better just take my regular size, already packed, survival tin can.
well, my idea with a folder was.. throwing random number, i got a 2 inch space for tools, if i put a 2 inch long folded knife, it would gave me a 4 inch tool once unfolded.. more handle to grab, longer cutting edge than just putting a 2 inch fixed steel where is have to sacrifice a part of the 2 inch to make an handle..

i was throwing idea up in the air to compile and search for better option from you guys ideas.. or something i didnt think of, thats all

originally i was maybe hoping to fit

1) a small 1/8 (or bigger) firesteel
2) a small cutting knife/tool/steel
3) maybe a small bic lighter (and using the firesteel in case of failure since its hard to beat the speed of a bic lighter)
4) cotton ball (which i never use usually) In the type of wood around here, there are unlimited amount of old man beard, birch bark, and firestarting material everywhere. I usually take a lil old man beard, or even just a leaf on the ground, pop a bubble of pin resin straight of the nearest tree and spark it.. it take fire like gasoline, even with wet material

at that point, i beleaved that small tin would be full.. like i said im open to idea to change all that.. and you guys are full of it (idea that is, lol :D )

while probably being too big for that particular project.. i like the idea behind that one handed lighter versus firesteel and striker

The smallest of the kabar/dozier folders will fit in the tin. Great knives for cheap and aus 8 instead of gerber 420.
I have one with blaze orange handle in mine.

I don't think so, compare its size to that of a US dime.

Its longest dimension (the flint tube) is 1-1/4" (3 cm.)

I should also mention that the unsharpened side of the hacksaw blade knife makes a great striker for a firesteel

mine resides in a matchsafe w/ a small steel (along w/ matches and a couple of firestraws)

Here is the result I got from

[bigger] Victorinox SAK Classic (Midnite Manager)
[smaller] Victorinox SAK Classic

Fit perfect, but fill all the space.. its a no go for this kit

if every small knife fail.. the hacksaw blade will do for sure

Lot's of great suggestions here guys but keep in mind the size of the tin the OP is tryin' to fill.

For my money the best suggestion is the hacksaw blade, great for a striker, makes a servicable blade.

The measurments are approximately: 2.5 inches long by 1.5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high.

Let's give more suggestions of blades that'll fit his tin instead of what we carry in our full tin PSKs

BTW thanks DocBurN, I think that's what the OP is lookin' for.;)

Not sure if your tin is smaller than my Altoids tin or not but I love my Mark Wohlwend PSK Knife...

today, still searching for the strongest and smallest knife.. and if i dont find other choices, i order all the idea you guys said while sharpening an hacksaw blade

I think a scalpel or hobby knife blade, or razor blade is the best, though not strongest for that tin.

could a swiss army cadet fit into one? seems like that or a farmer would be awsome

(edit) ok...looks like a 58mm SAK will fit (corner to corner), but you won't be able to fit much else in with it.

no SAK can fit into an altiods smalls tin. not even a classic.

would fit but i hate the fact that i have no handle to hold a blade.. like a razor blade and dont feel like wasting time making an handle for it every time i would like to cut something..

its my personnal choice as of what i like and dislike, all your idea works for the space i got and i thank you for your opinions, but i think i can sacrifice a few milimeters of tin space for a small handle on the blade.. i wont build a shelter with it anyway :) so when i say, strongest and smallest.. its really strongest i can get for that size with the fact that it wont have to work that hard as a blade

How about removing the plastic scales on a SAK classic? Should cut the form factor in 1/2 eh?

I think you're going to be back to T. Erdelyi's suggestion of the Honeybee or perhaps the Grasshopper on the diagonal.

pitdog- man that little thing makes fuzzies like nothing else. it would probobly take my 5 minutes to do that with the blade im using. is your technique amazing, scandi grind sweet, or is that knife just like a gift from god?

While we are on a Blade forum.. any suggestion of well known online store to get bugs from and micron 1, etc..
