Altoids Survival Tin knife

Stomper (JK Knives) here on BF makes some knives like this that fit in an altoids tin. You should check his out too.

I like the Ritter RSK Mk5, and it comes with its own Altoids tin. Doug Ritter's site describes how to use the tin, Mk5, and a Pocket Survival Pak, as well as how to fit it all in the tin.

I personally like the SAKs like Camper and Farmer better than those very small fixed blades.

Allen Newberry makes a nice one also. Sorry I coun't find a good pic.

that little crkt is interesting - I'd not seen that one before.

I like that! Pretty slick little kit. I wonder what steel CRKT is using for that little number. Prolly AUS8 or something similar.

I have that particular blade and I have to admit I'm not terribly impressed. The sheath will not retain the knife upside down very well at all. It arrived dull and I'm having a fair bit of trouble getting it sharp. It is made of some kind of Chinese steel, not AUS-8. I also think the blade is a little small to be really useful, but that's just me.

I think a Vic Farmer or even something like the Vic Midnite Manager would be a much better choice for a little kit like this. Still, it wasn't a bad deal for around 15 bucks, considering a tin of Altoids will set you back around 4-5 bucks where I live.

Little fixed knives like these are better than a razor blade for use any day of the week.
I keep one( my own design the Final Option Knife) in my small firstaid/ compass pouch that I wear every day on my belt right next to my belt knife.

Whether you are cutting tape, string, fishing line, diggin grubs out of wood,
Striking your fire steel or whittling up some fuzzsticks,
cleaning fish and game

Hey Bryan, that looks like a perfect every day carry kit! Could post a pic of the pouch you carry it all in, and how big the pouch is?
Thanks,
John

Here you go:

Altoid's tin survival kits are fun, cheap, and convenient. I keep one in my glovebox and when I hit the wood I can slip it in my pocket. And now that CRKT has one I bet we start seeing more of them. (Which is a good thing.)

the smallest dozier folders fit in the tins perfectly, mine has black blade and orange handle, great little aus8 knives for cheap.

Hi John, Thanks, My thinking on this little kit is for if I loose my water bottle kit. I can still start a fire. while builing my shelter lol unless I find a cave or a over hang. If there is any streams or ponds in the area for doing some fishing. Throwing out a few fishing lines into the stream or pond might just make dinner time a little more pleasurable lol. Or breakfast if you leave out a some night lines. I carry 4 water purifing tablets so I can have a at least
a gal. of water. That should give me some time to look for a spring or at least get me out of where I might be. Well I hope lol.
Them 2 bigger hooks are for attaching to poles for making gafts hooks for pulling them big fish I hope to catch. or for pull critter out of a hole or tree or just plain off the trail.

I tell ya them little fixed blades make skinning and gutting fish easy. I hate getting guts in my pocket knifes lol. I like the Farmer for the main blade and then the awl for pounching holes in leather or other gear that might need to get sewed up or what ever. And the saw blade on them SAK really make some nice perfect cuts for doing up trap trigger parts.

Here is a pic of it all packed up in the pouch I have.

This is another pic I have of the kit but with a different little knife I made.
This has a better pic of the pouch I think.

The pouch is 4.5" high and the 3.5" wide and 1.5" thick roughly. I did pic up
a few more of these types of pouches for some more kits like this. They are just a little bigger. I can hardly wait to get them made up. I am thining of putting in a Sapce blanket. That is the one thing I am lacking for this little kit.

Also I have been thinking about making a better sheath Kydex for the little fixed blade but making to so that it can have the line wrapped around it instead of the other line holder that I have. Like I said I am just thinking on it for now lol.

Well anyways I hope these pics ansewer your questions John.

John in the pic you posted. So you think the warny is a better design for this type of kit? Just wondering what your thoughts are. Since you like reading about the old time campers E Kreps and Horace Kephart them guys do you think old Horace would have put one of there little knives in there kits. I have wondered about Horace Kepharts Fitted wallet that he made up and carried. It by the contents of his fitted wallet it sure seems like that was his PSK.

anyways John chat with you later,

Bryan
