The morning news carried this item:

http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/51180922.html

Two off-duty firefighters pulled a lad from a thoroughly-engulfed van. The kid was in his car-seat, and neither rescuer had a knife...They had to borrow one from the crowd.
Had no one been able to supply a blade, likely the child would have died.

Pretty scary footage.

While I think all firefighters should have a knife on them at all times, it's certainly not the time to knock them, as it didn't look like anyone else was about to go in.
Good job, Brothers:thumbup:

Lesson learned...

Everyone should have a edged tool on their person at all times. Everyone. Good for the Firemen, though...good to see someone was there to step and help the one in distress.

Absolutely! I can remember a time...not so very long ago. A grown man would no sooner leave home without a pocketknife than without his pants.

Its a changing of the times. Ask an older man if he has his knife and he might say - "I have my pants on dont I?"

Ask a young man if he has his knife and he might say - "what do I need a knife for, laughing out loud"

Then there is a difference between people that work in offices and live in the city. And people who live in a rural area.

I think that the way a person was raised, the area where they live and their lifestyle helps define whether or not they will carry their knife on them all the time.

Although it is my belief that every grown man should have a knife, and a fire extiguisher on hand in the trunk..I have more than that..tools and the like, .....................I wont knock those 2 brave heros. God Bless them.

Just for the record, I wasn't knocking them, just having a little fun with it.

As a former EMT, we would have ribbed each other for this. :D

True Chris, but somebody is going to get ribbed every day anyway, so it might as well be them. If the general public new what went on at firehouses and EMT garages everywhere a lot of us would be out of work:D

I know Bro..no worries, i was just moved by thier bravery, and selflessness.

Don't forget about what one does for fun. I would imagine that people who camp, hike, kayak, etc. would be more apt to have a knife.

I'm disappointed in myself if I forget my knife at home or in a different pair of pants or something. I used to carry a SOG Flash I, now I carry a Kershaw RAM everywhere. My Izula will be the new BOB knife until I stomach the cost for an RC-5.

Always have your knife.... unless you work in a govt building, or live in Chicago, or.......

...and borderline irresponsible.

Why irresponsible? First they were off duty. Second as a working Paramedic I can honestly say I have never seen a knife used on scene for rescue purposes. We have tools that work better and are safer to our patients than a knife. So I don't see why not carrying a knife off duty is irresponsible.

Very crazy video
Here is a quote from one of the Heroes that saved the little boy

"You toss and turn, and you think back, 'what could I have done different?' I kicked myself. I always keep a small pocket knife on me, and I didn't have it at the time. That might have made a difference with the extent of the injuries that he sustained. It may not have been as bad. That's what I'm looking at. 'Why couldn't I get him out faster?' "

That's just bad training. If you spend all your working day ready to pull people out of burning cars, you should be used to carrying an EDC rescue tool.

That is a situation I fear for others and myself. I think we all know the code. "Better to have it and not need it.......
