Am I becoming a bit weird about knives ?

I've caught the bug, and managing it can be an interesting thing! I've done a few things to try and limit it, mostly cost wise, and sticking to knives that are a really good deal.

Using the exchange and used knives also helps to keep the buying down, plus it limits the amount you can buy since you have to wait for them to pop up!

My final way of limiting my knife collection is having a story for every knife. If I can't find a reason for buying the knife, like a little life event or something. Sounds silly maybe, but it gives some personality to my knifes and stops me from buying them willy nilly. Plus I can show off my collection and tell stories about each one!

Right now I'm waiting for my "Mistake Knife" (cute story about that one) from my wife! I bought it on a sale, but I think she is giving it to me for Christmas to celebrate our first Christmas as a married couple.

Those are some great ideas, Joshua! I'm forcing myself to slow down now too. I'm finding I'm able to say no to more 3" bladed folders, now that I have a few dozen of them. I've still got a ways to go, though.

Right now I'm watching a brand of knife that sells on ebay auctions. This is my third time bidding on one particular, someone just keeps bidding more than my budget! Almost had it for 10 bucks, and look today and they ramped it up to 40 all of a sudden. Not impressed!

Wow...
Don't you hate when you have to explain a joke...It pretty much wrecks it.
-In other words, nobodys talking about your shoe size, @Bob6794
The joke was for the O.P.'s benefit, as in yeah sure, depending on how many knives you own,
or collect, for some a shoebox would be adequate, however try storing a collection of, oh say....
about '61 knives', or like 'more than 80 knives' in a shoebox...
that doesn't come in 'giant' proportions.
:D
B.T.B

Well luckily I’m not married, and my girlfriend is a sweetheart and understands/accepts my hobbies. My real passion is cars (specificly mustangs and modular engines) and she knows that is something that will take a little while to acquire, owning a nice mustang herself. I had an 87 Olds 442, with a built 403 engine/TH350 trans but unfortunately the New England winters got the best of it. My next mustang will not be a rust bucket, but something in pristine condition so I can enjoy it for more than a few years, and have time to build it up how I want....knives are kind of just a “hobby in the meantime” till I get the car I really want someday.
Edit: don’t get me wrong, I love my knives, but muscle cars are my true passion in life.

I've spent over $1000 in the last month on knives since hanging out in this forum. Truth.

For many years I had one pocket knife, an SAK Spartan. I always carried it and it did everything I wanted it to despite it never being very sharp. It was my most useful tool because it was always there.
After recently becoming more interested in knives and acquiring a dozen or so more I find I spend more time worrying if they are sharp enough , testing their sharpness, fiddling and fidgeting with them, rather than actually using them for any practical reason . Since I retired I don't even need to use a knife very often.
I think I am becoming a little obsessed ! Will have to stop watching so many knife videos on Youtube.
You probably are getting a little obsessed but it's because you basically like knives and you are on this forum. I think most of us started as you did. The knife was something you carried for years until you lost it or whatever and bought a replacement. It was not pocket jewelry.

Since you are retired, having things to fiddle with keeps life interesting. Unless we use a knife on the job or need a knife on the job, I suspect many of us use their knives "not very often". But how often is that exactly? I use a knife just about every day. It may only be once in a day, but that knife is there and available to be used as I need it. That is what it's for.
