am i getting too carried away?

I generally carry 2 blades. Sometimes they are on the same knife though. I like to have a blade for precision cutting only, and a second blade that I don't mind abusing a bit.

That's me too. My keychain SAK doesn't really count so to avoid destroying my swisschamp's blade I use my beater folder for most cutting. It's also a slight self defense ish knife as it would take too long to protect myself with a swiss army knife unless I had time to fashion a Macgyver style weapon...hehe

i'm not trained in using a knife for self defense nor would i feel comfortable using it in that type of situation. i'd feel more comfortable using my hands if i had to.
nowadays, if you use a knife on someone who doesn't have one, they'll press charges for using assault with a deadly weapon. better off walking away from any nutjob or people looking for trouble.

That's pretty cool. I usually carry two slipjoints : a bigger 4" in the right pocket, and a small one or two bladed in the left. Covers all my needs and most of all, it's pleasant to use the most adequate blade for the current situation. And right now I get to realize I have always a cheap beater buried under the mobile in the jacket's breast pocket (jut in case I forgot to choose my EDCs), not speaking of the Bug on the house keys chainring and the Honeybee on the car keys chainring. Hell yeah, this amounts to five ! And don't get me started on the machetes, axes and hawkbills in the truck (it's for camping !). And the Swiss Champ in the ready-to-go bag (it's for the fingernails, splinters, and so on...).

I agree 100% but if there's a stray dog running around while I'm walking my dogs that is aggressive and there's no other way to stop it, or the chance I have to defend myself beyond "hand-to-hand/walking-running away" it's always an option.

What would you tell Crocodile Dundee about knives? Haha!

As long as you're using them for their intended purpose then it's fine.

thank you. what brought this all up was a conversation I had with the wife the other night after dumping my pockets on the nightstand before bed. yes it looked a bit cluttered, which is probably why she asked me "do you really need to carry all that?...doesn't it drive you crazy?", and my honest answer was "no honey, I use this stuff". she smiled, rolled over and turned off the lights.

Different tools for different purposes. Some people carry a "one knife meets all needs" knife. Others choose to have more than one for different purposes. It really depends on your job, lifestyle, and tolerance for carrying things around. I ususally have 2 knives on me. One is a small Boker KeyCom which also serves as a pocket hanger for my flashlight. The other is a slipjoint of some kind (Case, Buck, GEC, or Victorinox) in my back pocket beside my wallet.

The Boker does something the slipjoints don't do - it's a one-hand opener and closer that has a pocket clip and is small enough to keep the small Fenix flashlight out of the bottom of my pocket.

The slipjoints have longer blades, don't look threatening to anyone, slice apples much better, and I like the looks and feel of them. Neither type of knife can do what the other can, so both are worth carrying.

Here's a sample pic with a Case Small Texas Jack as the slipjoint:

Machete only needs one blade to wipe out bad guys, but I don't speak Spanish and am not as tough, so I carry two, a small one in my watchpocket of my Levi's.

The other day I went over to a buddy's house to celebrate his 18th birthday. As I was headed out I figured I'd grab him a gift and got a fairly decent, bolt locking gerber. Nothing fancy but not too shabby, especially by Wally World's standards. I honestly couldn't help but get myself a knife as well, my cheap fishing knife that I usually just leave in the boat as a back up busted, so I had an excuse. As I was walking out of the store and hopped into my truck I put the two new knives in my left pocket. I realized that I had a fun little assisted opening knife my girlfriend gave in it. See, this doesn't seem odd but I'm moderately OCD about certain things. My wallet, keys, and loose change go in my left pocket, phone, knife, and anything I happened to have in my hand go in my right. If I'm hunting I'll put loose shells and various gear in my back pockets. So for the time being I had two knives in my left pocket, a BM 610 RUKUS in my right, for those of you who don't know the rukus is a fairly hefty knife, and as always the first knife I got in my back pocket. I had four knives on me, a machete as well as a 10/22 in the truck, plus probably three or four knives that have been lost in between seats and whatnot.
Here were the knives in my pockets minus the one for my friend

What's the leftmost knife you're carrying there? I've been noticing more and more frame locks, which surprises me do to what I've seen as an overall dislike of liner locks.

I personally don't get carrying a million knives at once but at the same time am not judging it. I'm an office monkey so I mostly carry a slip joint, and barely even need it.

In my case with how I carry 3 knives, 2 keychain knives Vic Rally and Leatherman Micra, and than my normal cutting knife which currently rotates between a rough rider canoe, ka-bar dozier, and kershaw cryo it is more out of neccesity of the tools than just the desire to carry more knives. The 2 small multi tools get used a lot with the various screwdrivers they give me, but I hate the small SAK blade with a passion with how fragile it feels. And the Leatherman Micra blade take too long to get to since I have to pull out my keys, unclip it from them, unfold it, pull out blade, and than fold it back up just so I can safely cut something. Than do it all in reverse when I am finished, it's annoying to do all that just to cut something small. In the time it takes me to do all that I can pull out any other pocket knife I own (that's not attached to my keys) open it up, cut whats needed, and than put it away without drawing as much attention as it takes a lot less time and makes less noise since I don't have keys jingling in my hand while I'm fiddling with a knife to free it. I also tend to ditch my keys whenever I can such as when we take a friends car somewhere, I enter my house or my friends home, etc. But my primary pocket knife remains in my pocket, so I always have it with me.

Than I heard of other guys who carry multiple knives because they have their hard use knife, than their precision blade for when they need it. On the traditional forum I am under the impression some guys carry at least 2 because one is for work and one is for eating as they don't like using the knives provided at restaurants.

I usually have two knives on me. I don't count the little Wenger thingie (scissors, toothpick, tweezers, blade and nail file) on my key ring, but it is technically a knife and I can't go through the metal detectors at the court house with it.

I switch around or "rotate" my carry knives but I tend to always have a SAK in my pocket (beyond the Wenger). I use the SAK far more (like 99%) than any other knife and sometimes I wonder why I even bother carrying anything beyond it. Trying to get into the habit of carrying a fairly large traditional slipjoint too (GEC #42). On days that I carry the #42, I switch out the larger SAK for a Vic Bantam. It is all so dang complicated when you want to rotate your edc's but still stick to what you are comfortable with.

I don't know what will happen when I buy my first ZT or higher end folder.

If I am wandering the woods, I have a fixed blade with me and probably the SAK. Occasionally I EDC a small fixed blade because it's fun. But I still reach for the SAK just about every time. My small fixed blade is a Dozier personal.

I see these edc threads and wondrr why people carry 3-4 knives and flashlights....
But I read replies like this and wonder why people don't carry 3-4 knives and flashlights.......

AHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Doesn't sound like it to me. I think it depends entirely on the situation and person. Typically I just carry one folder but I've carried up to three. For some they have different uses for different blades so they need to carry more. Then there are some that just like having a few favorites along, nothing wrong with that!

Side comment: I'm stunned when people think that carrying a flashlight is unnecessary or somehow a bad thing. I started carrying one daily about a year ago and I'm amazed how much I actually use it. I ended up giving my dad and mom the same model I carry and my dad already had an immediate use for it one day when his workplace lost power. To each their own but I definitely recommend carrying a flashlight, even one of those tiny keychain lights is better than nothing.

Your askin' the wrong person, is not unusual for me to have between 4-7 knives on me at any given moment.

Right now I have a small Sebenza 21, Pat Crawford Framelock, Case Swayback Jack, Bud Nealy Aikuchi, Victorinox Farmer, Case Sowbelly and a Spyderco mini Dyad in frn, that's not including the other 15 knives in my bag.

So if you ask me you've got room for more. ;).
