Am I missing out by not owning a griptilian?

Nah. You arent missing anything. Let's face it, knives as a whole are really over-rated. For the price of the Benchmade, you could take your girlfriend to see Transformers 2 AND get popcorn and 1 coke OR....you could buy 30-60 identical Frost tactical knifes in a suweet deal that would make any flea market stand owner proud....

Then again, you coooould buy the Benchmade (if you can find one in stock) and stare at it each day as it sits next to your other suweet semi custom and pricey blades....but how fun would that be man????

Transformers 2 dude...it is calling your name.

dude if I had a girl right now I wouldnt be able to afford a byd cara cara much less a griptilian. women and good drink are too expensive for this poor college student!

and I own a cheap knife that I use all the time (Ive been carrying my 25 dollar boker trance ever since I got it and while its not even close to anything else I own I do like it because its nice in its own way). I dont own any semi customs btw, just some nice production folders. sometimes you get offers you cant refuse and other times the professor insists you buy the textbook.

btw Im way more pumped for inglorious bastards D:

I have a 556 mini Grip, full size Grip, a 707 and a 940 in the Benchmades, plus I just got a small Sebenza. The mini Grip is still one of my favorites for EDC. Opening and closing is really smooth, the blade length and shape are perfect for most of my cutting chores, it fits my hands pretty well, the scales don't get messed up in my pocket and it is solid. So I would say go for it.

However, I am learning that they are all just knives and while some feel nicer and some look better and some are higher quality, if they are sharp, they all do the same thing. Plus, most people won't or don't care, it is only us knife nuts that obsess over these issues. My wife was less than impressed with my Sebenza, saying that she liked the "blue one better" meaning the mini Grip.

Your wife's pretty cool, (probably one of the reasons why you married her). Mini-Grip's a cool tool too. Always worth having, and despite my better and more expensive blades, I always go back to it. I take mine 555HG. Hey OP! I say go for it.

I'd only say you're missing out if you've never owned an Axis-lock knife. If you've owned the higher end axis locks, I wouldn't say the Grips are much to worry about.

I would say yes, but I'm a mini Grip addict, so you're not really getting an unbiased opinion!

I've owned mini out, including the Cabela's D2 and Ritter S30V versions.

My current favorite is the 555HG, and the 556 is my work beater. The tanto-bladed version went to my sister.

As others have said:
Worry about things you actually NEED to spend money on first, then get the knife and try it out. If you don't like it, you can always sell it for about the same price you paid.

teh 550 and 555 are two of my favorite knives ive ever owned, Get one DEFINATELY you are missing out on some absoultely terrific tools

Mini Grips are the folding knives that I carry most. I have many..many.. more expensive folders, but for day-to-day use the practicality of the Mini Grip can't be beaten.

Go for a plain edge, uncoated, 556. You won't regret it.

I owned a full size Grip and sold it after a few months. At first the handle felt ok but after using it I just grew to not like it. It also is too light. I know it's a quality knife but it feels just too light for me. I handled one again yesterday but immediately felt the difference between it and my other, more comfortable knives. It's definitely a great buy if you like it.

I had the full size and HATED the toy feel of the handles. Love the Axis and the blade but man they could do so much better in the handle dept

Get one... They are awesome for the money. There are nicer BMs for more money, but the bang fer your buck value is off the charts. The only thing I can say as a negative is that they are a true pocket shredder! Every one I have makes swiss cheese out of my carry pocket. The scales are very textured even under the pocket clip. The Presidio series are ultra textured as well, but not to the same level. The 707/943/960 spend more time with me, but the price is x2 or x3.

The shape of a knife handle is pretty much an individual thing. I balk at paying $60 when the Vex is available in full flat grind and G10 scales at $45. The steel's are pretty much equivalent to most buyers - nobody can really tell the difference blindfolded.

The Grip's sabre grind is a value engineered way to quickly profile a blade, and leaves a thicker angle. The swedge above the grind often creates more friction in cuts using the full blade. Molded FRN scales need liners as they are so flexible - most reputable makers like BM, Spyderco, and Buck won't leave them out now.

Knife details are very application specific, and knowing the above, I bought the Vex. It's far superior for less.

I own way more expensive benchmades than the griptilian. I dont care about value for money at all, this is simply a question of do I need a griptilian when I own more expensive knives. I am interested in if the griptilian is a good enough knife in a vaccuum that I need one regardless of what else Ive got. both of you made some fine points to that question so I do appreciate that.

The pocket thing is worrying, I wear slacks which arent very thick or tough =/

The handle on the full sized Griptilian felt very cheap.
Comfortable, but cheap.

The Mini-Griptilian felt a little less cheap, but not as comfortable.
It's really just a "three finger knife" for me.

I sanded down the texture on one of mine on the clip side and it worked mint. A mini-grip will eat your pockets for breakfast. I wear dress pants/khakis at work all day so, I know what you mean. Buy it, trust me, it is well worth owning as it has some unique qualities all its own. I don't use any of mine at work, but I do slip it in my thin athletic shorts pocket as I know it will never fall out. If you have lost a knife before then this is the blade for you! It will NOT fall out.

I would say get the mini Presidio as it is almost the same style, but not so anti-pocket.

Sorry,

Vex has a liner lock and the Mini-Grip has Axis. The extra $20.00 is VERY well spent on the Axis system. Just my opinion, but the Axis lock is a clear winner. Faster too.

I own inexpensive and expensive knives. How the knife feels and performs is my deciding factor. I have, and would, pass on the Grip.

Can anyone comment on the fixed blade Griptilian? I have heard disappointing reports about it.

I have too pondered this--everyone loves the Grip, so should I get one? This is what I decided: NO, I have the Mini-Presidio, which to me looks far better in the looks department. It is a little more expensive, but worth it if it makes me happy. To be honest I don't see why people don't rave about the Mini-Presidio, but maybe it's because it costs more. The handle of the grip just looks kind of cheap and plasticky to me, especially where there is the bump for the attachment of the clip.
