Am I paranoid?

Coatings wear off. It's no big deal.

Is yours wearing off too much, indicating that something's wrong? Go chop and poke some more, and it will be easier to tell whether it's behaving normally or abnormally, instead of trying to figure it out based upon one single poke.

No, they'll always warranty their knives, regardless.

You may want to go ahead and let someone see the pic -- then use it some more anyway before sending it back. It'd be a drag to send it back to have them make it perfect, only to be afraid to use it again. If it's going to get used, may as well use it hard for a while and see what it does.

I think this advice is very sound. Test the coating and really see what it'll do. Actually, the tan coating is supposedly the most durable of the bunch, so I am a little surprised here. If it was an improper "cure," you'll know it after some serious chopping. You're going to get some wear near the edge regardless, but if it starts coming off in big chunks, then you should probably call the shop.

Had this experience with a Ranger RD-9. Coating was flaking off like mad after just a few chops. Justin said it was probably due to insufficient prep before the coating was applied (needed to be clean and completely oil free), and he offered to do a strip and recoat free of charge. However, I just wound up stripping the blade and cold bluing it. I like it better in that configuration anyway.

Saf-t-cab,

Yes, best to get in touch with the shop on this one.

It would also be better if you look into a Photobucket account to post pics.

It is actually against the rules to host on Blade Forums pics for non-paying menbers, jsut so we all remember.....

The Photobucket account is free, and gives you great flexibility in hosting and posting pics.

Let us know about the outcome bud!!

Obviously, non-paying member can post pics if thatmguy is recommending that Saf-t-cab use Photobucket. Right?

So how does xaman's doing him a quick favor and getting the pic up (in the interest of the Busse community) "hurt this site" as the rules state? I'm obviously missing something here (other than them's the rule, bud).

Did xaman host the pic as a BF attachment? Maybe that's what I'm missing. (Probably is.) Or did he use Photobucket as well? Would it have been different if he *had* used Photobucket or some other server's space? Just looking for clarification in case somebody asks me to post a pic in the future.

Post or host on BF?

Reason I ask is that I'd be happy to poke the photo on my Photobucket space and link it if that's not against the rules. Then, this thread will make more sense to those who haven't read it yet.

My bad on the clarification.:foot:

Paying members have the privilege to host pics on Bladeforums.

It is hosting on BladeForums for non-paying members that is against the rules.

Hosting elsewhere and posting the links is cool.

Sorry for the cornfusion.:o

Stinkin vodka.........

Thanks thatmguy!

Looks normal to me. One chop into a limb (tree not human) and I see the same thing. Not coating removal but "smoothing".

But why is it black under the tan coat? Or am I seeing things?

Hi guys.
Decided to take my new HR for a "nature walk" today.
Something happened right after I stabbed a tree - coating started to rub off.
Some of it rubbed off; some got smudged, like the clay. Is that a normal thing?..
well, with chopping, stabbing, prying, and Lots of hard use.. the coating will start to wear like on Morimotom's knives.
Which is why you need to buy Two of each knife.
One as a user
One as a safe queen to stay all pretty :)

this came up in another thread as well. seems under some tan coatings there is black as well.

I've seen the black coating under urban gray as well.

I kind of hope my tan/snakeskin doesn't have the black. I like the bare INFI blending into the tan coating look. No big deal if it does though. It'll all be worn off eventually. :D

errrrr...I dunno guys, I'd have to agree with those here that say that kind of wear is normal. The only coating I've seen to hold up to impaling the tip into wood is the old smooth black coating. Now that stuff was freaking tough. I've baton wood with a SHSH II before and the coating didn't even flinch.

Just use the crap out of it and once it gets real fugly....DC the sucker!!

Just my two cents. :)

ive had several tans, and the undercoating isnt visible until the tan wears.
