Am I paranoid?

2 things:

1: That kind of wear is normal. Your knife isn't going to stay "pretty" if you use it. After heavy use it becomes a BEAUTIFUL thing :D.

2: The black under the tan is completely normal. It acts like a secondary protective coat. Doesn't really come off unless you strip it. Very durable. I'd guess it helps the tan coating bond and seal.

As soon as I recieve a knife, and decide it's a keeper, I take it out immediately and do some test chops and cuts to break it in. As soon as the first marks and scuffs appear I have made her mine. Users are the best. ;)

I'm going to take a stab at this one say (lousy pun intended) that the tan overcoat is probably much thinner than the black undercoat.

I wonder if you could strip it down to the undercoat? It looks undamaged!

I didn't order any coated Badgers........

It's hard to tell Ed, the black coat wears with the tan so it's impossible to tell how thick either one is unless you have a knife that the outer coat flakes instead of wears. If I had to say, the black is probably much thinner but it's much hardier at the same time. It looks pretty cool to have a 2 tone blade ;). I let my buddy borrow my Eu Mag the other day for some work he had to do and he thought it was covered in rust :D. He was afraid of cutting himself on it for fear of tetnis.
