Am I qualified to host a forum on khukuris, kamis, Gurkhas and Nepal?

It has been brought to my attention that there are a few individuals who feel I am unqualifed to host a forum dealing with khukuris, kamis, Gurkhas and Nepal. Therefore, I feel I must supply my credentials (so here they are in brief) and let forum members arrive at the proper choice.

I graduated from college in 1956, degree in math and physics. Pilot's license issued same year. One year advanced study as "special student." About 20 years experience mostly as flight test engineer at such firms as Boeing, Lockheed, Cessna, Ryan and Rohr. Time out during college to volunteer for service in US Navy during Korean War.

At age 49 joined the US Peace Corps and travelled to Nepal as a volunteer -- one of a group of about 25 out of 600 applicants -- and the senior volunteer -- pay at that time $75 per month. As a PC volunteer and private citizen lived in Nepal in 1983, 84, and 85 with time off for kidney surgery. Married Yangdu while in Nepal. Was offered Nepali citizenship. Returned to US in time for New Year 1986. Yangdu joined me here in early 86. Visited Nepal for two months in 1988. Lived in Nepal for six months in 1991 and came within a hair's breadth of staying for the rest of my life. Have not been back since. Decent working knowledge of Nepali language while living in Nepal. Lack of practice and Heineken have destroyed most of this. Life in Nepal spent living with Nepalis, not as a tourist. Accepted Buddhism as "the way."

Father-in-law 8 year Gurkha vet, Indian Army. Brother-in-law, Lhakpa, retiring from Gurkha Service, British Army, in November this year. Brother-in-law, Gurme, in Singapore Gurkha Police Contingency 16-18 years service. Friends with both past and present Gurkha service perhaps 75 back in Nepal. Friends who are Nepal Army vets -- maybe 25. Knowledge of Gurkhas and Gurkha service learned from friends and relatives.

Became interested in khukuris while living in Nepal. Became friends with kamis and visited their shops, both large and small.
Became adopted brother to two kamis, Kancha Kami of Phera village, and T. B. (Bai) Bishwkarma, who makes the HI khukuris and a lot of "other" khukuris for sale to dealers in Kathmandu. Another major "arun" (shop) is located in Bhaktapur, operated by Khadka Bahadur, who supplies Nepal Army khukuris and "other" khukuris to dealers. Major distributor is the Khukuri House, located in Thamel, (tourist capital of Nepal) Kathmandu and operated by Lalit Lama.

And, I even used to smoke Khukuris!

So, if there are others who have better qualifications I'd suggest they present them and let the forum members vote on who is best qualified to host a forum about Gurkhas, khukuris, kamis and Nepal. I, of course, will abide by the wishes of the forumites.

Hi Howard:

Because you were the first to post your reserved vote of confidence is special to me because you've been there and done that. Your Nepal experience gives you the perspective to see through a bunch of BS.
And I gather you didn't see a lot of that.

Bill

Oh, I don't know, Bill, I think, hmmm , well I guess you will have to do. If you need some help, I'm more than willing to make up,er, provide you with more facts.

Given that if you really screw up with me or another forumite they can tell me and I can get to you before I'm cooled off is a plus, I suppose. Well, OK I guess, for now.

Thanks, guys.

I think most who visit here and do business with us already know the qualifications and the HI "dance to a different drummer."

This post if for those who don't.

If I only spoke on matters in which I knew as much as you know about khukuris, gurkhas, and nepal, I wouldn't have very much to say. Even if you didn't know anything at all about those subject Bill your personality is an ideal one for a moderator regardless of the subject of the forum.

Thanks, Cliff, and thanks for defending me. I read your post in the other thread and elected to make this post here rather than respond. "The man who never fights, always wins."

Bill

WHAT!? The absurdity of questioning your qualifications doesn't even deserve this much attention...

Bill,we won`t tell `em what the quals were for an Airmans Cert.in 1956.Right?You did have to do spin/stalls.

Bill,

Even a dumb, non-Khukuri owning, amateur knife nut like me can see you're a FIXTURE already on the BladeForums!

I learned a long time ago not to do anything but accept phenomenon. Anyone who questions your credentials on this forum will get a pretty good roasting.

Well, it IS a Himalayan Imports forum, right? Who better to keep house than the one whose house it is?

I don't own any khukuri's but I'm definitely shopping. And I definitely like this forum--very educational. Bill, I think you're doing just fine.

GHOSTSIX and Bill, weren't the '56 quals being able how to rig wire, dope canvas, and be familiar with rotary engines? And no spins...the upper wing might tear off. HaHa. Sounds like perfect training for a khukuri expert.

All that stuff, John, and had to do spins anyway and pray the thing stayed glued together. Also, no com, no nav., just railroad tracks and water towers.

Bill

Bill,

Not only are you more qualified to moderate this forum than, say, me, for instance, you are probably more qualified to do it than anyone who questions your qualifications. More than likely you do not know everything about Nepal (but I am sure that most Nepalese don't know everything either), but you do know more than most of us, which in itself, makes you qualified. You more than make up for any knowledge you do not have by being willing to learn more, and on top of that, you are the most prolific moderator I have ever seen. You read absolutely every single post in each of your forums, and reply to a large amount of them. If that does not make you a qualified moderator of some sort, I do not know what will. And on top of it all, you are just a neat guy.

YeK

I think your mannerism, knowledge, and associations make you eminately qualified to moderator a forum on khukuris, Gurkhas, kamis, and Nepal. Also, I see the Good News Knife forum is well moderated.

How much closer to making khukuri's be than having two adoptive brothers who are kamis except be a kami yourself?

Will

Why do the cigerette packages say finist Virgina tobacco. Do they come from Virgina or is this a name for a type of tobacco.

Bill

Since I will not seek, nor will I accept, my party's nomination for moderator of HI forum, I whole-heartedly throw my support behind you. All of the others are pretenders to the crown. It's been a pleasure dealing with you.

Talking about certification, my dad used to have the original CAA ( not FAA ) pilots license. I am informed that it was lost when a rug rat ate it. Did I mention I was an only child? So all of you who claim to have lived, breathed and eaten flying, put up or shut up!
God, I thought I was never going to get a chance to tell that story. Almost a shame that it's true.
