Am I the only one that adores pitted blades?

I like that knife Perry, but that aint pitted ,this is.:) Almost the way it was when bought ,except less rust.

Valley Forge Eureka jack with beautiful waterfall(?) handles, that pictures don't do justice.

Wow... Lyle, that one is something! Amazing to see how the iron bolsters deteriorated, but the handle covers were spared. I would let that one ride in my pocket from time to time, if I were you, and consider it an honor to carry.

Perry, I really like that DE jack, those B&M covers are really great. Blades are not too far gone, all things considered.

Thank ya Lyle and Alex! I like that,,,, amazing that the handles are not totally gone after that much blade pitting. You would think they would've been toasty looong ago!
It's still quite a looker though. I have one more to show that was found in the dirt, some years back. Celluloid handles, in a center swell jack pattern. Stay tuned!

Here it is, through some serious research I was able to determine that this is a Hartford Cutlery Co. Duluth, MINN. 1914 to 1939, a trademark used by Marshall-Wells.
Check out those handles!

^Holy cow, that's what I'm talking about :D

Thanks for the pics fellas, it means a lot. I honestly don't know why I like that look so much, it doesn't make sense to prefer deteriorated tools over new or well-kept ones...but I still like them.

Nice ones muphasta! You're certainly not the only one DeadFall27! Knives are funny, how they attach themselves to you and make you like them even though nobody else would. I only own these 2 but the Hartford is really old and the fact that it exists is all I care about, where it's concerned.

Thanks! The Bowie was in the barn when we moved onto the property in '81. Looked like that then too. The Russells were our neighbor's husband's. He was a WWI Vet and shop teacher.

One more, a Union Knife Works Moose pattern, It had a broken blade I turned into a box cutter, this is a great EDC knife.

It has some nice 100+ old pitting, I've posted this before but these are different shots.

Pretty cool to find them like that. My grandfather was also a WW1 VET. I have his knife he carried while in France, in 1917/18.

To me, a patina earned through activity or even adventurous neglect is better than some kinda forced acid thing.

That is very cool. Neither of my grandfathers were in the military, but dad is a Viet Nam vet. Unfortunately the knife he carried while over there didn't make it back w/him. He asked his "Buddy" to send it to him, even gave him a few bucks to ship it, and the guy never did. He doesn't even know what kind of knife it was (brand). My mother sent it to him for Christmas if I remember correctly. He has a few pix and uniforms still, but something about a knife seems like more of a treasure.

Here's the edit - My father does have a Union Civil War belt. His mother's X number of great grandfather was in the calvary. Now, we doubt that the belt in his posession is his X#great grandfather's as it has a bayonet scabbard. We've not done the research, but it seems that it would have had a sword vice a bayonet. But thinking of it now, the sword may have been on a longer chain, belt, etc and hung lower for easier access while mounted on the horse.

Normally I would think 35 posts ample to cover a topic like this but I just cannot pass the opportunity to comment. Patina can be wonderful. Pitting and rust is hideous. It shows a lack of care and negligence. Albeit sometimes accidental it is still HIDEOUS!

Nothing charming about this old neglected Holley that someone thought polishing would somehow improve it:

Still, I think some of us, myself included, would still cherish it for what it is. Sad, maybe, but better that than they just tossed it into the trash in whatever state it was found in. Lovely bone and shield by the way...

Brad, if you can't stand that one any longer, I guess I could take one for the team and give it a good home. ;)

While I very much do think it HIDEOUS I do use it for something. It is prominently displayed in my safe so I see it every time I open it up. It is a great reminder to keep up with the guns and knives in there! But thank you for your generous offer:D
