Am I the only one that adores pitted blades?

Not expecting everyone to be onboard with the feeling of appreciation for old pitted and neglected pocket knives but with some, as you stated, there is a use for them. Especially if they still take an edge.

I wouldn't deliberately leave a knife out to rust/pit, but I do certainly believe that old knives are very cool and deserve to be reconditioned and given a second chance at life. Pits don't bother me, but wouldn't do it intentionally is all.

Normally I would think 35 posts ample to cover a topic like this but I just cannot pass the opportunity to comment. Patina can be wonderful. Pitting and rust is hideous. It shows a lack of care and negligence. Albeit sometimes accidental it is still HIDEOUS!

Nothing charming about this old neglected Holley that someone thought polishing would somehow improve it:

WE HAVE A WINNER! The pits  Actually looks like it was run-over by a tracked vehicle! Kind of metal jigging :D And what a shame that it got into this state, the buffer didn't help, it just highlighted the pitting giving a lead solder/welding effect......

No, I can't see the appeal of something almost getting into disintegration due to neglect/abuse, sorry.

I am OCD when it comes to my knives personally. I do have a few with some patina on them though. I usually will hit a knife with a metal finishing pad and oil it up with hopes weatherguard and remoil if it has a very heavy patina. I am afraid that a pitted blade will spread rust on to clean blades.

Oh I don't think that will happen unless the pitted knife or knives were not thoroughly cleaned of rust.

This is the only "vintage" Case i own, i was so excited to get it as buying old knives is not that easy where i live, anyhoo when i got this little knife the blades were a nasty brown, i think a mix of rust and oil, i was not sure how much to clean it so i just washed it in warm soapy water dried it carefully and gave it a light polish with Brasso wadding...

After searching for knives and checking out recommendations from my last thread, I decided to take a break and check out the 'bay like I love to do in my spare time. While combing through the posts, I came across quite a few I liked. After looking through my picks, I noticed a pattern; all of them were pitted and well-worn. I am not sure about you, but well-loved and heavily pitted knives are my favorites to have in my pocket. I like them more than brand new knives.

It's funny, because I have almost just bought one of the GEC Boy's knives in rust red bone just so I could leave it outside to rust and pit (I may still do it honestly...) I know that it take away from the character that it naturally will earn from being in my possession, but there is something about pitting I love.

Is there anyone else that loves pitting like I do?

I've learned to love old knives. Two words; character and history. If only they could talk oh the stories they could tell.
