Based on my memory of these sorts of threads, and this thread, I must really be in the minority.
I get almost all my knives from trades. And I have a very small number of knives, only 20 or 25, and that many only because I bought some that have no secondary market value, and I have yet to give them away.
To me, a knife is a piece of steel, etc. No soul, no spirit, no mumbo jumbo. They are not my kids, or friends, or even associates. They are knives. My appreciation of them stems from the possibilities brought forth by their use, sort of like, "concentrated potential". So, I acquire knives for their functional value, I keep them while I learn what I can from their shape and form, and then they are on the table if I can barter them towards another knife that I believe may have great usefulness for me.
I don't collect.
I don't wory about future value, except to get the best value I can.
I don't believe I will ever own a knife that I would not be willing to trade off or sell.
But, I do go through a good number, I had sold my Military to buy a Sebenza, sold the Sebenza, traded for a Military, had it a couple weeks and sold it.
