Sharp & Fiery: your #1 is, then?

(Probably a separate topic...)
Not the SHF. :)

I’m hoping the thread doesn’t go into comparisons of different knives. Just was looking to see if the SHF was as good as people made it sound or if it was just hype.

The SHF was around for a long while before people started to praise it. :)

I have a SHF Black PVD (large) and a SHF SW (Small). The former is a pocket howitzer. The latter, simply perfect. Both arrived with excellent fit and finish. Sharp out of the box.

My Spyderco PM 2 is mind-boggling in its quality. It is #1 in my collection. It simply is not my style. The liner lock and I are not a great match. The SHF SW has my favorite type of lock, so it gets carried far more often.

So, substance matters the most-but style can complicate the decision making process.

It's a knife I want to love but can't. I like the overall profile and the graphic versions look really good in person. Filler tabs and lack of a dedicated left handed version are deal breakers for me, especially at the price point.

I do agree with the colored filler tabs. Never could understand why you would want to draw the eye to it.

It's a great knife. Not having a sharpening choil is actually a better choice once I finally got the knife in my hand. I don't understand the complaint of the blade-handle ratio? Is the blade too long given the handle length? If anything, I think it's a big Plus.

It's a bit heavy and thick behind the edge. But that aligns well to the intended use of the knife. There are plenty of inexpensive slicier folders If slicing is what I am after.

The action is just average for such a big folder running on pb washers. But I would say that is on par with CRK folders.

There's a reason why this knife can be priced in the $500+ range when the market is flooded with time framelock folders. However, the fact remains that SHF doesn't retain value as good as RHK and CRK in the secondary market.

I had the 3" Warthog. Lots to like the S45VN blade, the big pivot and the graphics. I don't understand why Spartan does not chamfer the jimping and other edges. I guess it's a design choice but I could not get past that. The action left a lot to be desired on mine. I own two Hinderer's and they are far better finished and luxurious feeling.

Thank you to all who replied. You all have helped me relax and realize that I’m not in a rush or need to try out the SHF.

I haven’t totally written off the small, but the large is out of the question.

I do like their two tone finishes though. :)

I will say, the fit and finish on my small PJ is impeccable, and the jimping is pretty dehorned. I like this one much more than the small Sebenza I briefly owned.

I can't get over the grind/plunge area. I never noticed it before but that would niggle at me.
It's hideous. I really wanna get one but I know I won't be able to keep my dremel away from grinding a choil in there, further ruining the blade. Just look how I mangled my Recon lol.

If they ever fix it it's going in my basket no hesitation. They remind me a lot of the Benchmade LFTI (760) which I REALLY liked but couldn't afford to get at the time it was in production.

It's a tiny bit thicker than the Inkosi* with a blade that's a also a tiny bit thicker. This is no Medford monstrosity. However, it is right at the limit of what I will carry, in regards to size and weight.

*Inkosi's grind is better , IMO.

I think all of the CRKs have a more refined look to the overall knives and especially blade grind. But I do admit to having a weakness for some of the graphics. Which is to say, I'd not trade any of my CRKs for a SHF.

Everything is hyped these days. Based on my experience with CRKs, they seem to be one of the most heavily hyped. My two samples don't live up to what I was told to expect. My experience with one sample of SHF has been at least equal to what I was lead to expect. That's not to say it does not have downsides, because it does. But what object made by man does not?

I have the 3.25

A light user and a backup because I’m obsessive

And i really don’t like it

In fact I actually hate it and have spent a bunch of time thinking about how deeply i dislike it, how horribly overrated it is, which is a ridiculous waste of my time, but im a ridiculous man…

I’m currently in contact to send them to a shop to sell on commission after i couldn’t sell it at a very reduced price on my local blade forums (australia)

I love crk, love hinderer, just cannot like the shf

Not sure why… but even having it stashed in the cupboard bugs me and I don’t think it should be spoken about in the same paragraph as a crk..

But thats just me, and i can be a jerk, lots of people love it and I’m glad they’ve found something they love!! I mean no disrespect to those who like it

It's too bad you feel that way, I dislike the small Sebenza, by the small SHF is actually decent for what it is

To me, my small SHF is perfect. As is my small CRK Sebenza. The price difference makes this an incredible comparison.

I picked up a small Plague Doctor last October after we returned from Europe with COVID-19. I'm not a big fan of frame locks, but I'm glad I purchased the knife. It's well-made, and to me, it has great ergos. After a bit, and a little adjustment, the action is perfect. I'm drawn to the graphics of the SHF line as much as anything. It could have been sharper, and when I finally take it to the Worksharp Elite, it will be.
