Am I the only one?

And by the way, don't believe me? Go take a folder and fixed blade of the same size and beat the crap out of em..... Which one has lock problems, or an off center blade, or gunk in the pivot?

I can guarantee you it's not the fixed blade.

I love fixed blades, I just like folders more. There's nothing quite like the loud click when you flick open the blade and the conditions I subject my folders to don't cause them to get beaten to crap.

In response to neffarious:

Sure, all the time. Got the holes in my gut to prove it.

Bottom line is folders will never be as "abuse tolerant" as fixed blades. Like it or not, it's fact.

If you use as intended , you should be fine most if the time with a folder. You will be fine 100% of the time with a fixed blade.

Never said I didn't use knives as intended. I do. Some fixed blades just happen to be intended to chop stuff, be beaten through logs, etc. not so w folders. If you just cut stuff you'll be fine.

Hiking and backpacking, a fixed blade, at work a folder. For me, those are the right tools for the job. If I had to choose, definitely a fixed blade.

I just don't see the point in having a knife with an obvious breaking point.
Yes I always have a 4in fixed blade in my pocket.

sure folders are more fragile than fixed blades but they are more inconspicuous and lighter.
I carry a fixed blade some of the time and a folder all of the time 99% of what I can do with a fixed blade i can do with a folder (even cutting down small trees). that being said you can get a better fixed blade than a folding knife for the same money.

Fixed blades are better in use, but folders are a hell of a lot more convenient.

This mirrors my thoughts and I also love the satisfying click of opening one.

Having said that, if I could get away with carrying my favorite fixed blades in any environment all the time without a lash batted, I probably would.

I carry a folder daily at work, but only because it's convenient and I have to. If I had my druthers, my Ratmandu would be on my hip 24/7, not just on weekends. Sheeple be damned - it's legal here!

This is mainly the only reason I don't really carry fixed blades. I have a few pretty cool ones that never get carried. :( This would, perhaps, be the one advantage of some post-apocalyptic society. I mean I'd probably die soon after, but at least I could spend some time wearing my fixed blades always.

Also I feel like in Texas you should be able to wear fixed blades, large hats and six shooters. Ass-less chaps optional.

You owe me a new phone pal! The assless chaps thing literally made me spew my beer all over it!!!!!

Dammit! Gotta get out the brawny towels for this mishap!

Aww dang, hope it's alright man!

(I had a friend who dropped one in orange juice once, fully submerged, and luckily it was still okay).

If you ever get the chance to hold, play with, or even carry a good quality folder PLEASE DO! You may very well change your mind. I wasn't much into knives a few years back, i carried a cheap linerlock folder and it was just a tool to me.... then i got myself a Spyderco... then a Cold steel.... and now i carry a $220 benchmade every day.

I do sometimes like to strap a small sized fixed blade (4" blade) to my belt and go along with my day. And yes, sheeple be damned, for there are no laws or ordnances against the open carry of fixed blades where i live. When i do have a fixed blade on me, it becomes my main knife in most situations.

And to those who like to point out the obvious...
Will a fixed blade beat a folder in batoning? YES, of course
Will a fixed blade develop Blade Play? NO, of course (well... if it's full tang, anyway, and as far as I'm concerned, that's the only way to go with fixed blades.)
Will a Garden Hose extinguish a forest fire as well as a fire hose? NO, OF COURSE.

Albeit satirical, that last comparison proves a very good point. Folder VS Fixed Blade all depends on your methods of use. You can't fit many fixed blades with a medium-large sized blade in your pocket... folders? no problem. Are you surviving in the wilderness with a folding knife? I hope not.... I hope you guys can see my point.

Folder VS Fixed Blade is a battle that will never end. If you guys are into firearms at all you can equate it to.... 9mm vs .45 or Polymer frame vs steel frame... pancakes vs waffles, etc, etc.
Also, wow, long post, sorry.

There are things a fixed blade can do that a folder can't, this is true, can't argue it. At the same time, you're not gonna be able to just discreetly and securely carry any but the smallest fixed blade in your pocket, and you're likely going to have to get a custom sheath for it too if you don't want it moving around in said pocket. So it really depends on where you are, what you're doing. Like me, my work has no problem with me carrying a folder, cause it's in my pocket. But they don't want me walking around with a knife on my hip, even though my state legally allows carry of up to a 5.5 inch blade. And it's not like any of the things a fixed blade can do that a folder can't are going to come into play in that environment anyway-I'm not building shelters, batonning or chopping firewood, or gutting and skinning deer, I'm breaking down boxes, cutting zip ties, and that sort of thing.

For comparison, a rifle can shooter farther and more accurately than a 9mm too, but unless you're actually out hunting in the woods or in a combat zone, you're a lot more likely to find someone carrying a Glock than you are an AR-15.

There's an old axiom which I think relevant: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."

Fixed blades may indeed be tougher than folders, but the fixed blade also may not be available in many circumstances where a folder would be. City, state, or local ordinances or company policies may prohibit fixed blades or it may simply be too socially awkward to carry one.

The perfect blade is useless when it's not carried. And to state it plainly, folders are more likely to be carried.

BTW, I carry both, but the fixed is a small necker which is hidden under my clothing. The folder is openly carried in my left front pocket.

I just don't get the whole a folder is a broken knife. It's a knife, not a hammer, not a prybar...its a knife, you use it for cutting.

I hate all knives. They are killing instruments. ;)

Actually I could never understand why people wanted to carry fixed blades for years. A folder did everything I ever did with a knife. My dominant thought is "Different strokes for different folks." Do what pleases you.

My thoughts are if the knife can't get you out of any situation then it is useless to have

Respectfully, your thoughts are demonstrably incorrect. And to be frank, if I have to use a knife to get out of a "situation" something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. I get out of situations by using my phone, I simplify my work with a knife.
