I've always wanted to make knives but lately I'm finding it hard to find the motivation let alone the time. Here's how it all began: I bought a RAT-3. Honest to goodness I've looked at all sorts of knives since I started carrying it a year ago and while I enjoy looking I cannot see myself carrying one or even making one. I just don't have the gumption to stop carrying my RAT. It fits all my needs; in the kitchen, the field, just messing around. I haven't ever been this happy with a knife. Am I the only one that's found something and been this content?

P.S. Please don't burn me at the stake for heresy :D.

Thats awesome to find one thats perfect for ya. Im that way with my fat JK keppy, convexed by Ban. Its my go to blade.

However I still buy knives for the pleasure of adding to my collection, and the happiness it gives me to test out some new steel. Plus, there are so many makrs out there that I would hate to miss out on.

I have tried my hand at both making knives and sheaths...now I have a pile of "projects" waiting for me to get to them...the sad truth is I would rather pay someone to take care of it all for me..then to take away family/ hiking time...I know how to make a knife, and I can make a pretty nice sheath...thats good enough for me. I'm happy with all my blades. I spend an amazing ammount of time researching my purchases before I make them and I'm rarely disapointed with them afterward.

But there's always the next one. Mabey it's a steel I haven't tried yet or a new blade alot of people are making a fuss over but I always end up wanting another.

I guess it boils down to me being a student of knives. I want to know as much as I can about them.

Two things:
1.) Try an RC-3 by RAT Cutlery, same design, much better implementation of the RAT-3 (larger handle for one).
2.) Yes, I have. Awaiting the release of the Orange scale/OD powder coat RC-3 and 4, I picked up a BRKT Aurora to quell my new knife withdrawls. I'm not sure I'll get another knife that size, it's the perfect bushcrafter, IMO. Hmmm, might get a Wolf River by BRKT, but that'd be a dedicated skinning/game prep knife, not a bushcrafter.

It sounds like you have found the perfect knife for you stay with it.

But it never hurts to keep looking there just might be another perfect knife for you.

I have bought ,sold, traded many knives I have loved at that moment but did not fit my needs during use...so I move them to feed the need to find the perfect blade....and me personally I like RAT Cutlery & Bark river.I have slowed down on buying flashy blades or Expensive knives does not mean the perfect knife for me.....I like a hard working knife & RC & BRKT fit the bill for me

I think I might have to pick me up one of them RC-3 and well.. an izula and some of the Breeden knives. heck why not a busse!

Damn knife bug! once it gets a hold of you, you can't keep those creditcards clean!

It's cool you've found the blade that works for you, unfortunately I think I speak for the majority of us when I say, It doesn't end there. be a kitchen knife, a new pocket knife a blade for the lawnmower they just keep on biting the wallet!

fedaykincmndr,

Looks like you're the only one! :-) Glad you found a knife that fits so well. I've got an RC-4 that is very nice. Loaned it to my brother-in-law. Hope to get it back this weekend. I've handled the RAT-3 at a gun show and it was all I could do to keep my cash in my pocket. If the fellow had made any kind of deal at all .... It is just a very handy feeling knife. A RC-3 may be my next knife.

BTW, glad you are back home. Thank you! Southern Indiana is a great area, at least the parts I saw. Used to get down to St. Johns, Starlight and that area some to festivals and the winery when I was in Indianapolis.

I have a Rat3 also. I own over a hundred knives but the Rat is what i carry plus a Spyderco Native as a back up. Im very happy with my Rat3.

Shearwater,

I'm about 20 minutes or so from Starlight. Really just up the road! Glad you enjoyed it; it's heaven on earth here IMO.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been considering picking up a Tenacious just to see what it's like, I just can't convince myself. And heaven knows I need ammo more than a knife. I've got a new rifle to feed; now, THAT'S and addiction that never goes away. :D

I just got a RAT-3, and find I love it, too. I felt bad supporting Ontario with my purchase, but really like the D2 steel.

That being said, I was pretty irritated at having to spend several hours stripping, sanding, and reshaping the blade. The edge angle was very broad, and barely sharp enough to cut paper. I sent Ontario an email suggesting they put a higher grind on their knives, like Spyderco does, but never heard back from them.

On the other hand, I sent RAT Cutlery an email asking if I could buy the orange handles for my RAT-3, and received a reply that same day from Mike Perrin. Unfortunately the handles won't work, but I was very impressed at how good RAT Cutlery's customer service is. I may just have to pick up an RC-4, just to show my support...

I don't think I'll ever buy another belt knife again, I just don't feel like it because of my bravo-1. I'm still going to buy an izula and a manix though.

I've been truly happy with my BRKT Aurora since I got it at the end of April and really wasn't considering buying any more similar sized belt knives. But then I saw the Koster Bushmaster in CPM3V and just had to sign up for that. It's a sickness. I'm also jonesing for an Izula :D
