Amsterdam Meet 2014 Report of Upcoming Spyderco Prototypes

I had a bit of a Goldilocks moment when I first picked up the Lil’ LionSpy, this size is just right.

I have the original large LionSpy. The large model is a great knife, but between the strong spring in the locking tab, the tight lock-up and the smooth scales, it can be a bit heavy and tricky to control or unlock one-handed. The Lil’ LionSpy was a breeze to handle. The feel and operation was very nice. While I wait for a new edition of the Li’l Temperance (which wasn’t shown at the meet, in case you’re wondering), the Lil’ LionSpy will be just fine to hold me over.

This ‘little’ folder is a nice high-tech, stout and ergonomic Little Big Knife. This knife was easily one of my top-three favorite prototypes this year.

The approximate specifications of the Lil’ LionSpy are:
Overall Length: 18,5 cm / 7.28 inches
Edge Length: 8 cm / 3.15 inches
Blade Length: 8,5 cm / 3.35 inches
Blade Thickness: 0,4 cm / 0.16 inches

I’m afraid that’s all for now, as I’m getting ready to travel to Germany for a few days, to attend the IWA show. There were so many prototypes this year and also way more knives than usual which I can publish. I didn’t have time to finish them all since Sunday. I have a dozen or so knives yet to cover. I’ll probably get to prepare and post these amazing prototypes again in a couple of days. Thank you all for the interest and kind words.

Excellent pictures Mr Blonde.

That titanium frame lock K2 with a 4.52" blade of CPM-10V is amazing.

The little Chubby is also pretty slick with a 2.24" blade (0.16" thick).

The Ed Schempp Frontier with the bowie blade for the "ethnic" series looks very interesting and I too wish they had gone with either a 5" blade or a 3" blade. At 3.66" for the blade it's probably very useful even with a thin blade. What are the bolsters made of?

Have a good time in Germany, Wouter!
You definitely posted enough knife-porn to hold me over until you' re back:D

My absolute highlights so far are the Frontier, Chubby, K2(CPM 10V!) and the GB fixed blade.

Mr Blonde,

Any reason you did not include the weight for these prototypes?

I want a Frontier in a very bad way. I have some interest in a few others, but for me, the Frontier is one worth sleeping on the couch for.

I can see it now....frontier - acid stonewashed blade, acid etched liners, etched and tumbled bolsters, sand blasted carbon fiber and clip...I'm gonna make this happen.

K2, Endura Ti, Dog Tag, and Frontier all look awesome!

The Schempp Frontier and the Lil Lionspy need to be in my pocket now. By far my favorites in this thread, thanks Mr. Blonde.

I really like the Gayle Bradley fixed blade. It's a beautiful design, I hope it makes it to production sooner rather than later

Whoah, way to put words in people's mouth slick. Nobody is questioning Spyderco or the maker's intentions, or seriously saying that the knife will only work if you're being raped in a shower - but sometimes a new knife design is not the best response to every problem. There should be some major responses from the Military and government to such a problem; imagine the outcry if the only response from the government was to issue all the female soldiers small knives. Also, I think that a company like Spyderco needs to consider the unique position that marketing a product as a "Military Shower Rape Prevention Knife" puts them in. Why not just leave that part out of the product description, make it a general self defense neck knife, and instead host seminars on bases that get that information in the hands of the ones that need it?

I've read articles on the topic, mostly petitions from woman that have been in this situation.

In one of the codes or rule books it says as a female sometimes it is best to not resist the sexual assault.

^^that is screwed up, there have been many many attempts to do something about this issue.

This has been the absolute only solid answer I have seen to date. No expensive seminars you have to attend woman who have been raped are not going to go to these, but I'm sure there are and I'm sure women do, but it's not solving the problem.

My guess? (GUESS, SPECULATION) Someone close to the spyderco company may have been a victim, or maybe one or more of the petitions that made it to my inbox made it to theirs as well.

If this really is true, MAJOR KUDOS.

Before this the only physical rape prevention was some crazy a$$ condom with teeth facing inward like a snake so that the male would be forced to go to a doctor for removal...and then punished after.
Now that is medieval! We're a little past that now. But seriously, these chicks are helpless in those situations....now there is a blatant prevention method one can actively obtain and use if need be. Good s**t

Ps. That chubby is the first spyderco folder to attract my attention to its looks...I know spyders are designed for their use, most just look kinda funny to me

Why not read the thread from the designers, found in this very forum?

I really like the K2 and the chubby. A collaboration may be the only way I can afford a blade from these makers. I will be waiting excitedly.

K2 and Chubby here. Great designs! Keep the Clip the same on the Chubby please.

The Chubby prototype, designed by Michael Burch, was one of my personal favorites from this year’s meet. Apparently, Michael Burch has been making this design for some time and it’s been refined over the years. The dual beveled blade allows for very easy penetration.

This knife reminded me a bit of the Spyderco Poliwog, which I’ve carried for a few years as an EDC. The Chubby is much more beefy and fills the hand even better. The titanium handle and integral lock make for a relatively lightweight folder. I think the all steel Poliwog was heavier. The knife handled very well. I think the circular inserts are carbon fiber. I’m usually not a fan of custom makers’ clip designs, versus Spyderco designed clips, but this clip turned out well. It wasn’t too sharp and didn’t pinch the hand in my grips. After I was done taking these photos, I made a mental note to put the Chubby on my wishlist.

The approximate specifications of the Chubby prototype are:
Overall Length: 15,1 cm / 5.94 inches
Edge Length: 5,7cm / 2.24 inches
Blade Length: 5,7 cm / 2.24 inches
Blade Thickness: 0,4 cm / 0.16 inches

Very excited for this! Seems like the dimensions are about the same as the Techno except a better contoured grip. Definitely going to get one. I hope they change the name tho...it will make some weird conversation starters.
"GUESS what I just got!?" "What?" "I just got a Chubby........."

;)

My exact thoughts when I saw this. Gotta have one, and gotta be careful how I describe it when I show it to people

Well if it's a girl it may be a great ice breaker if she has a good sense of humor. Lol

Chubby, lil lionspy, battlestation, firefly are all on my list.
