Amsterdam Meet 2014 Report of Upcoming Spyderco Prototypes

Even though the Mike Draper is beautiful from a Mr Blonde's more distant photo, a closeup reveals roughness around the edges. I hope for you righty carry only people, that that otherwise beautiful eye candy, will get refined. For me...oh well. Snubbed again as a minority left hander. (give me some cheese with my whine)

As far as I'm concerned, If it's not made for the left, It isn't right.

Well, it isn't a Native 5 custom shop (yet), but we did get a FRN Native 5...

What I really want is a Native 5 custom shop with these features:

Full screw-together construction
Made in Golden, CO, USA, Earth

OPTIONS:

Blade: S30V, S35VN (+$$), S90V (+$$), or S110V (+$$)
Handle: FRN in: black, white, gray, blue, yellow, red, pink, green, or orange; or G10 (+$$) in: black, blue, or yellow
Clip: standard spoon in silver or black or deep-carry (+$$) in silver or black

Those rough edges are probaly due to the fact this knife has been banged around quite a bit during travels to shows and handling by many knifeknuts, distributors etc...

In 2012 we saw the Lum fixed blade Tanto sprint with a burgundy handle that came out last year, IIRC. Apparently, there were some problems with that handle material. Therefore, this year there will be a sprint of the fixed Lum Tanto with a beautiful black and green G-10 handle. It’s a more tactical version of this nice tanto design, versus last year’s ‘collector’s edition’ .

PITS stands for Pie In The Sky, apparently, and it is the working title of this very impressive new addition to the slipit line.

The ergos were really nice and I’d love to see how this folder holds up under daily carry and use. The spring bar on top of the handle helps to keep the blade either open or closed. The opening action was very smooth on this prototype. It seemed to me that this knife might be able to withstand more hard use than the slipits we’ve seen so far from Spyderco. The Mike Read PITS is also in my top three favorite prototypes from this year’s meet.

The approximate specifications of the Mike Read PITS folder are:

Overall Length: 18,3 cm / 7.20 inches
Edge Length: 7cm / 2.75 inches
Blade Length: 7,5 cm / 2.95 inches
Blade Thickness: 0,3 cm / 0.19 inches

After TSA announced that it was going to allow a folding knife on airlines again, albeit under very strict specifications, the spydercrew took to the drawing board. The result was the Roadie slipit. Although TSA’s proposal has been cancelled by now, Spyderco is still pursuing this prototype.

The knife features two round divots on the blade to open the knife. The Roadie is a small and slim slipit, but it seemed quite controllable and useful as a little folder to take care of most EDC chores you’d encounter during (air)travel.

The approximate specifications of the Roadie are:

Overall Length: 13 cm / 5.19 inches
Edge Length: 4,3 cm / 1.70 inches
Blade Length: 5,5 cm / 2.17 inches
Blade Thickness: 0,2 cm / 0.08 inches

Nice. Is that made by LionSteel or Fox or another one of many knifemakers in Maniago, Italy? Is the handle titanium or aluminum?

I'm sorry I didn't pick up those details during the meet, as I was working on the other photos at the time. I'm guesstimating that the PITS had a steel handle and that production will be in Italy, considering the bladesteel, which I believe is made by bohler.

Thanks. Yes, perhaps a stainless steel handle. N690Co is used a lot by both Fox & Viper but not so much by LionSteel any more.

I was browsing the UKPK's as I decided I needed to have a slipjoint just in case I travel somewhere I cannot have a locking knife. The PITS might be the ticket. I hope it is steel and Ti for the handle, I don't want to spend that much on a SLIPIT. Plus, I do not have an Italian Spydie or that steel, so three birds with one stone.

The only way I don't end up owning a PITS is if I'm struck by a meteor and obliterated before it's released. As far as my personal needs/use is concerned, that knife is dangerously close to perfection.
