An ABS certification above the current Mastersmith designation?

after the GMS they could then go for Supreme Poobah.

That is where such silliness ends up at.

We've seen the idea referred to as 'silly' several times in this thread, however I don't understand what's silly about creating a new level that recognizes and separates the elite from the rest of the pack where there's a huge variation in skill levels. Silly?/No, Impractical?/Perhaps!

The Grandmaster concept is just to help insure a knife's continuing value for collector/investor/knife flippers.

Incorrect IMO, as I believe an elevated level would be 'value-neutral' for a new "GM" rated knifemaker's market. My reasoning being that even though his/her GM marked knives would most likely generate a modest increase, their existing "MS" knives would most likely decline slightly in value on the secondary market.

It is silly due to it ends up being a never ending titles trying to imply it it better then the last.

Their work will alone separates them from the pack.

Do you think the greatest artists over the centuries were worrying about being a "Grand Master" painter or sculptor? No of course not because their work is what set them apart.

But for fun lets try it on for size "Grand Master Monet" "Grand Master Picasso" "Grand Master Van Gough", hahahah sounds like a bunch of rappers or freemasons.

Stock removal makers are left out of the Zen master rating, right?

How about a "honorable mention" for them?

Using that logic, I guess Pulitzer prizes, Nobel prizes, and Oscars are 'Silly' too, as winner's work alone should separate them from the pack.

I'm disappointed this topic has now run off the rails by the pundits.

^^^ Exactly. This.

How about Jedi Master Smith?:rolleyes::D

Since I let my ABS membership slide years ago, I don't really have a stake in this matter, but for what it's worth, I put very little value in special titles. I barf in my mouth a little bit when the political elites add "The Right Honourable" and such to their names. Why would knife makers want to lower themselves to that level?:p
The Grand Poobah comment made me chuckle.:D

But do we need "Grand Pulitzer Prize" "Grand Nobel Peace Prize" or "Grand Oscars"?

See how silly that would be?

Lets not pretend we are saying a M.S. should not exist

But those aren't titles, they're awards. "Pulitzer prize-winning writer," or "Oscar-winning performance," isn't the same as holding a title like "Master Writer/Actor." It's more like winning the "Best of Show" at a knife show competition.

silly analogy, (just bustin you balls, Kevin :))

Perhaps the CKCA should provide a prize for a grand master level cutler,... er... wait a minute... :)$ :)$ :)$

^^ Who doesn't like good natured ribbing? I DO! However all things in balance. There's a difference in humor and 'That's assinine!' and I know the difference. Nyuk, nyuk! :p

One final point. OK, Pullitzers, and Nobels, and Oscars are simply examples directly unrelated. However, the premise shows mastery ABOVE AND BEYOND already masterful work.

Now let's talk about mastery above and beyond which IS related: Does anyone think that our esteemed Jerry Fisk, MS is indifferent to the title: National Living Treasure, bestowed upon him in his state of Arkansas?

He certainly earned that rank, and I think there may be only one other maker with this designation. (help me here.) Now, when we see him mark an extra-special piece with 'NLT' it's a step up.

Is the current ABS in a position to create a new level? Maybe that's the laugh-ability here. I'm standing clear of that quagmire which is stated in the other ABS thread. I don't think so.

However in another nine years when Kevin brings this topic up again, it may change. Right now, not so much. :foot:

Thank you! See you at Blade!!!! ;)
