Some people may consider this OT, but let's just say it works towards the continued survival of the brotherhood between Canada and the U.S.

This is an email I received a bit ago and decided I should share with our American brothers and sisters.

Subject: A Simple Measure.

In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the anti-American sentiment and negativity, we should remember England 's Prime Minister Tony Blair's words during a recent interview. When asked by one of his Parliament members why he believes so much in America , he said:

"A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in ... And how many want out." Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

1. Jesus Christ
2. The American G. I.

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom. If you want to pass this on I think it would be appropriate, as many seem to forget BOTH of them.

Hope you find this appropriate.

Doc

Wow, quite interesting, thanks for sharing it.

There is a good reason why the US and Canada have the longest undefended border in the world. In miles and years.

The border is certainly defending some of my christmas presents from getting across:D

Ironically one is a BRKT mini Canadian, I will die a thousand before I finally have that baby in my paws.

Back on topic, I appreciate america and think largely they are great people, and have close relatives among them.
The "but" part of this statement, however, should be reserved for the political forum.

The politicians both North and South of the border are beside the points of what makes both Nations great. The people do. Like the people here. Shame the Aussies are so far away. They make for good neighbors too.

Doc,

Thanks forposting that. Living in Brazil I get force fed a steady diet of anti-americanism. Some of it is deserved, the corprate greed that the US exports is truly disgusting at times.

I try to stay out of most political debate. I'm in Brazil to represent #1 on your list. With friends I just say, "Yeah, Brazil will be better off without the US when China and Venezuala dominate the continent." Mac

Codger,
"The politicians both North and South of the border are beside the points of what makes both Nations great. The people do. Like the people here. Shame the Aussies are so far away. They make for good neighbors too."

That cannot be repeated enough & is true of every nation. Often times all peoples of a nation are judged and held accountable for the actions of a few or the ruling party. I am fairly dubious of ANY government irregardless the lagnuage.
Corporate greed??? Nah!! ;) I wonder if the EPA/OSHA inspected the plant at Bopal, India??

That is quite true.
However, though Mr. Blairs sentiment was very kind, I do not believe him for a second, and agree with imalterna. Governments are merely corporations with very good PR departments.
The top 100 officals in the white house average a net worth between 3 and 11 million, and Condoleeza Rice has an oil tanker named after her.
Canadas government is not quite as well off I am afraid,
but thats beside the point, Codger is right, its all about the people that make up the country. The US and Canada are much more in common then many care to admit.

(That statistic about the white house looks funny I know, but I imagine the numbers are estimates from assets such as stocks and real estate, etc. I didnt just pull it out of my a$$)

Note that the section in quotation marks is what Mr. Blair actually said; the comments regarding Christ and the American GI were not said by him--they were tacked on by someone else.

Yeah I just come here for the American Propaganda machine and Jesus friendly rhetoric.

Those who have served know why they did.

Alot come back with an entirely different picture of what this Norman Rockwell painted email diuretic really implies. America is not run by her citizens anymore, she is not line with the constitution or remembering her past to avoid mistakes.

No, America is Wal Mart and Big Government mandate at its best, want proof? Try to get a good wage job or buy a house where the median income is 27K and the median houseprice is 700K.

Ahhh, it makes a bit more sense now. Shoulda picked up on that.
Doc, was the e-mail sent to you implying that american GI's died for Canadians, or was it a group e-mail you recieved? Because I think the GI's died for other, much less important reasons.
This topic is starting to head into deep and dark political waters, and I admit I did my share of rowing. Sorry Doc, I know that was far from your intention, I will shut up now.

For those of you that miss the point, America constantly takes a bashing by just about everybody. It must get tiresome. I thought it might be refreshing to hear another point of view.

That's all I have I have to say on the subject.

Thanks for the refreshing pro american view, coming from a canadian it makes it more meaningful.

I am not trying to be cynical its just a natural reaction. Seriously as an American, thank you for the words of encouragement.

Sorry, did not mean to go political. Intended more the "don't shoot the messenger because you don't like the message" vein. As in I do not blame every Japanese I meet for Pearl Harbour...

Thanks,
Bill

Doc,

It was taken in the spirit it was given. As someone who takes nothing but american bashing, even having lived under a death threat for the better part of a year by anti-american Brazilian marxist che guevara wannabes, it was refreshing. If all the world lived in the kind of peaceful relationship shared by the Canadians and Americans the would would be a paradise. Mac

I don't think many of the Americans on this forum represent the average materialistic, watches cnn/fox news, card-carrying right/left wing sheeple people of 'America.' There are days when I am mystified by what the people in power in this country get away with, and the incessant agenda setting by both the right and left. I like to think all people who free themselves of the sheeple creed are my neighbors whether you live in Brazil, Canada or the US (or anywhere else.) Thanks for using your brain and loving freedom! Sorry to get too political on the survival thread!

Try reading a book on the ingenuity of the machines and minds America overflowed with to use in the seconds world war, then walking onto a living room where there's Entertainment Tonight on. You will instantly get a double migraine.

Or change a tire for an old Lady, then read in the news that an illegal alien raped and otherwise tore up an old Lady to death...there's almost no point in being proud to be an American; everything seems to be a big ha ha joke here and no one cares.

After America, there's nowhere to go as far as I can tell.

Doc,

Thanks for the great post and your thoughts. My latest Grohmann (my seventh) made a successful border crossing just before Christmas, so I'm doing my small part (from California) to support the Canadian economy.

All the very best!
