i finally made a couple of those the other day for straightening long blades.. after seeing Dave Wesner's. I made one for my 3 year old son too. They are kind of fun!
Looking great Serge! This is the first I've seen of what he is conjuring... very cool.
Here are the beginnings of the next piece... it will be an axe...a battle axe if you will... but we are still deciding on a culture and time period for inspiration. But I'm getting some of the raw materials together. The body will be some wagon wheel wrought iron 3/8" thick which will be wrapped on a round drift (also of wrought iron) with a damascus forge welded bit. I'm making the damascus from alternating layers of 1084 and band saw blade. The teeth of the band saw blades will be left in tact and alternating in orientation. The voids from the teeth will be filled with 1084 dust mixed with some wrought iron shop dust (I can't guarantee it's purity!) and the seams of the billet will be fully welded to hold in the dust. I'm not exactly sure what the pattern will be like, but I've always wanted to do this. Again... this is primarily an artistic project driven mostly by inspiration here. Even though these aren't all historically accurate materials, I'm striving more for capturing the spirit of the idea that ancient blades were rarely made of homogenous pieces of metal and were more likely combinations of available material.
Actually.. change of plans. We've agreed to go back to the war hammer for the next one. Will use most of the same materials...including the damascus head. Serge ... should you post it?
For those subscribed to this WIP.. I apologize for the delay. Serge and I are both having real bad luck with shipping this blade. Took forever during the flooding to get to him.. then we realized we needed to re-quench to harden the ricasso area (which I left a bit soft in case Serge needed to make modifications) so it's coming back to me verrrrryyy slowwwlllyyy...
Anyway... I've made a good start on our next project... the warhammer... and will be posting a separate thread for that one.
