Life is full of surprises and fun ... the fun starts with your birth and surprises continue till you make fun out of those surprises!
Yes! It's a big surprise for me! I received an email today! And attached to it were the pictures of a forged blade of a large cutter

.. The knife you speak of is a favorite of mine. I really like the blade shape, and have admired Malaysian blade designs for years. I had to quit taking orders over two years ago, was too much stress, but I find your request interesting. That is a large blade you are asking about ..

.. I will give this some thought for a few days ..

.. Sure would be a wicked cutter :) ..

.. I'll do a nice hamon on this one. This is going to be a super piece! I'm looking forward to working on it. I'll probably have it finished July or August ..
Guess who is The Smith that forged the blade shown in the above picture?

Again and again, I like the design of this particular large cutter because it has a so very close resemblance to the design of a Golok of Peninsular Malaysia :o

Ah .. ha .. don't tell me that this time you all still could make another good guesses ;)

Looks good already!
Yes, it does  Thanks Resinrib ;)

And below is the picture of the rough grinded blade. The plunge is already there. And there's a long narrow groove along the middle of the full tang.

.. When I want a wild hamon on damascus, I use W2 and iron at 5000+ layers but I can add some 1060, 1084 to the mix and still get a good hamon ..

.. I do have some very good stabilized curly koa. Would that be OK? ..

.. Hope to send more photos in a few days ..
Who is The Smith? I think it's not that easy to make a good guess this time

What's the next step? Heat treating? I am not very sure and The Smith didn't mentioned to me about it :D

Did you say hamon and 5000 layer w2?

That's a really good looking blade. I'm sure it will be out of sight when finished.

That sounds like a Hanson steel recipe. Should be a beast when complete.

I wouldn't have guessed Don, but it sure is seamless in design like Don's.
The handle reminds me of Hancock.

Lots of thanks to Dave, Roger, Nick, Fivefold, Joe, Lorien, Mostho and Don for all your replies :) Lots of thanks also to those who took a peek on this thread as well

.. I need to finish a bowie that's in the works, then it's on to yours.

Hope to send more photos in a few days ..
Fair enough, IMVHO it is a standard practices among knife makers to make several knives in one go and then he will proceed on according to which should finish first in his order list ;)

One thing that I know about The Smith is that he never make a knife sheath himself.

The Smith said:
.. I do not make sheaths ..
So the sheath of this large cutter might be custom ordered to either Paul Long, or Kenny Rowe or Bob Schrap :p

It's a great news! Just received an email with a picture attachment

.. Hope you like a wild hamon. Here's a quick shot of the blade after heat treatment, with a light etch.

The wood block is stabilized curly koa, good stuff but doesn't show well in the photo ..
I think The Smith might be somebody like me who love to play hide and seek when he was just a little kid! So he purposely took the shot of the right hand side of the blade to hide his identity (i.e. thank you very much to The Smith for doing it that way!) :D

So guess! Who is he?

Quoted below is what The Smith said in his latest email :p
The Smith said:
.. not sure why I got those three spots below the hamon at the belly of the blade. They are far enough from the edge, so no problem there and they are cool looking ..
Few freckles on the gorgeous just makes her looks unique and special ;)

What say you?

I say .. there ain't no cure for me .. I think I'm starting to deeply fall in love :o

I didn't think Don used wood for handles:p

That's one helluva knife. Full tang? DH3 rarely makes them full tang. I mean, when he made Sinistre years ago for me, that was one of the few.

Wait, whut..?

Tell The Smith I like it too.
