And Now Another Large Cutter

Thanks for all the nice words :o

Here is a picture of what we in Peninsular Malaysia called as Golok Rembau:

This Golok Rembau is a traditional Malaysan large knife which is locally used as agricultural and farming tool for cutting and chopping small to medium size of trees, branches, woods etc. It is also used to slaughter farm animal such as chickens, goats and cows for food especially during big festival. In short, Golok to Malaysian is just like Khukuri to Nepali.

And I saw the similar characteristics of a Golok Rembau in Hanson Blue Cutter.

And that's when I decided to have a Hanson Golok Rembau which is a scaled up version of a Hanson Blue Cutter in a different type of steel and handle materials. After several email discussion with Don we came out with an agreed specs and Don promised me to deliver his work of arts by July or August, 2010. True to his words Don already finished the knife last week which is the last week of July, 2010. Again, lots of thanks to you Don!

The size of Golok Rembau varies from as short as about 12" OAL to as long as about 20" OAL. Meaning the Hanson Golok Rembau with 19 1/2" OAL is considered as among the largest in the Golok Rembau family.

There are many type of Golok but the two most popular in Peinsular Malaysia are Golok Perak and Golok Rembau. And there are two type of Golok Rembau, one is Golok Rembau with a notch at the choil area and the other one doesn't has any notch at all. The size of the notch is about the diameter of an index finger. Hanson Golok Rembau is the one without notch at all.

The one at the top and the one at the bottom are Golok Perak while the one at the middle is Golok Rembau. And IMVHO now I'm the custodian of the most beautiful Golok Rembau without notch which I named it as Hanson Golok Rembau :)

mohd, thanks for the photos and the education. I'm really beginning to like these goloks

I have several goloks which I use pretty regularly and for the most part they live a rough life. As they should.
They're right up there with khukuris for me, as my favourite type of bush knife. Usually they'll have a taper forged in, have a crowned spine, ergonomic grip and a weight that is manageable in tight terrain.

Mohd, I love what you're doing with your knife orders. Very cool to get a north american spin on these ethnic tools whose history is so intertwined with a people and place. Super neat!

Hi Lorien, one thing that I can do is to show the knife around among our local knifemakers in hope that it can sort of give them idea that they should also move on to up their quality of work in term of fit and finish as well as the heat treating and differential hardening technique :o

So does thing mean I win the knife?!?!
Hi Nick, You win my salute :D

Mohd to Don said:
Let Paul decide the best suit sheath design for the large cutter. Kindly let Paul know that the sheath can be made from either cow or horse or sheep leather. Paul also can use stingray or ostrich leather either as a full sheath or as inlaid material.
And below is the shots on the result .. I believe these are Paul's (i.e. not Don's) shots on the knife and the sheath he made for it.

And later, this knife has to take a long flight to Malaysia which is at the other side of the world. Importing knife from other parts of the world to Malaysia is always a risk. It is a matter of definition and terminology on whether that particular imported knife is categorized as a tool or as a weapon by the Customs people. Things will be easy if they see the knife fit to be categorized as a tool otherwise .. (i.e. no, I don't want to say anything that might be a bad omen!). I know it is a cutter. A large cutter. So I wish and I hope that Customs will look at this cutter as a tool to cut small to medium size trees and branches or bushes .. because .. I want to be the one happy custodian of this large cutter. Kindly make the same wish for me, pretty please :)

Pak Mohd, i guess this awesome blade will be more useful if you send it to next island, east of Malay Peninsula .....
LOL

That is too cool for school!
May it sail thru customs without a second glance.

BTW regarding the sheath, I'm just wondering what sort of leather Paul used as the inlay. Or, is it just an inlay look using a tooling and coloring technique? It looks real nice to my eyes :)

I'm sure it's an inlay in the sheath.

Beautiful beautiful work. I would think you could get it classified as "artwork". I'm sure even the least knife savvy person would have no question of the artistic merit of this work.

Mohd, it is an inlay, and it is Ostrich leg. It is not as yellow as it appears in the photo. It is really more tan colored and blends quite well..... and yes, it is a BEAST!!!

Paul

VERY nice!:D Paul, where do you find these T-Rex sized ostriches?;)

I really like Paul's sheath for your cutter, Mohd. This really tops off a fantastic package!

Paul must have found one of those tall South Texas Ostriches for this inlay. He does fabulous work. Hope it arrives safely.

Hope so, Stuart! Amen!

He freaked when he saw the size of this beast
Hi Don, when I see the beautiful beast in person I might be freaked myself :D

Hi Paul, thank you very much for building the sheath in such a beautiful appearance! Ostrich leg as the inlay makes the sheath so special to me!
I've been eying your work for one of my orders (i.e. at least) for a long time. And now my wish is granted! Again, thank you very much. Paul :D

And thanks to Joe P, Joe M and Roger for all the nice words.

Hope it arrives safely.
Thanks Joe, Amen!

Don and Paul really deserve all the nice words for their great works! I feel so very lucky to know them and I feel I'm honored to be the custodian of their works

Sincerely I'm very glad to know you all through this forums :)

Terima kasih! Terima kasih! Terima kasih!
