Looking good man, makes me wish they'd bring on the factory micarta.

I've been resisting the 17 just because I don't like the handles. If they come up with something like what you've done as an aftermarket purchase I'll be all over it. Nice work.

you're too kind Ethan. but, thanks.

i'll tell you what...you get one and send it my way and i'll put some on for you, if you like. i have more burlap. PM if interested.

Coming along nicely. What did you use to bond the layers of burlap together? Is it just plain old epoxy? I ask because I'd like to try making my own scales out of burlap or canvas.

just a quart of fiberglass resin i got at the hardware store. it makes a mess, and i was questioning whether it was worth it, but now that i see the finished results...i will be doing it again.

good luck!

There's some threads on the website here with instruction on home made micarta or as some call it mycarta. I plan on giving this a try as well with some old jeans and some burlap. Heck, might try alternating layers. There's some folks who've done amazing patterns by twisting different colored fabric together before using the resin. I think youtube has some videos as well.

alright. that's it. all done.

i used the sanding disk a bit more to even things up and to rough-round some edges. i then hit it with some files to help shape. lastly, i used sandpaper to finish it up. i am fond of the shoe-shine style to round the straight-edges.

the blue in the picture is masking tape. i put that on the back of the strip of sandpaper. i discovered this little trick the last handle i made. i was ripping a lot of the sandpaper. the tape helps hold it together so i can use it longer.

Those turned out great. Nice job. I really like the black G10 contrast. Can't wait to see its new pants in the future.

Wow man! Those really turned out nice.
Thanks for sharing. Looks like it was quite a process. lol
So you're the guy to get ahold of if we need Tweener micarta or G-10 scales...right? :D

Thats just insane! I been aching to make myself a set of burlap scales, i have everything i need except the time lol

Thanks Jonny. And, i'd be more than happy to help a brotha out. ;) :D seriously though, feel free to PM about it if interested.

I love the scales, but I gotta be "That guy"

Was the blade chipped before the project started, or did the vice get it?

thanks everyone for the kind words. dramos...you are right...the time is the thing. really, actual work time is not bad. it is the waiting for epoxy to set, etc.

i tried to glue some more burlap to G10 tonight so i could begin this same process on a BK2. but, i don't have a very good work space. i am outside in a detached sunroom. and, oh yeah...it was 15 degrees, at the time. ;)

needless to say, the epoxy started setting up immediately. i stuck the pieces together and there were gaps between the scales and liners. d'oh! had to pull them apart. i might have to do this in the basement or something. but dang...the stuff doth stink! :D

ding, ding, ding. you win the prize! :D i did not bother to mention it, but i knew the subject would come up. ;)

seriously though...it certainly did not come like that. the blade has been wrapped for about 3 months. so, you can imagine how thrilled i was when i was done to unwrap it and find the chip. i have no idea how it happened.

i was going to take it to the stones. but, then i just kinda shrugged. it is really not that big of a deal to me. i will use it as is, and when it dulls up a bit (it is lazer sharp), i will take care of it.
