And so it begins... About to order another Becker.

If you're new to sharpening, and bigger knives period... get the 9. I have the 4 & the 9. Love them both, but the 9 is an excellent at teaching you about big knives. The 4 demands a bit of experience.

This is probably smart. I do prefer the 4 to the 9, but the 4 has a bigger learning curve for sure, both in use and in sharpening.

This makes a lot of sense and seems pretty wise.

As of this moment. I'm really convinced I'm getting the BK-4. I just have yet to pull the trigger on it.

Now, I just have to weight out the options of the BK-4 vs. carrying an Axe.

Despite my previous post, I think that's a good choice, because I heart the Machax. Just be prepared for the bigger curve in using, and especially sharpening it.

But a ceramic rod when you get the 4, or a 3/4"-1" wooden dowel and some high grit SiC sandpaper and use those.

Go slow and take your time to learn her curves. Treat her right and you will have a great time. :D

Alright, in just a few days I'll be ordering my BK-4. That thing looks like a beast and I can't wait to play around with it.

Now...I've had my eye on a smaller, EDC fixed blade. Would the 11 work well for that?

Also, I thought my brother-in-law's BK-2 was a little too big and heavy for my tastes. Over the last few days, I've had the opportunity to use it more and I'm starting to fall for it... It might be the next on the list.

Here's a good source - http://www.coyleoutdoors.com/bk-4/

Oh yes.

Oh ... if you like the 2 then you will luv the 9. ;)

The 11 is a Great edc. Hands down one of my favorites, when I can carry a fixed blade.

And +1 for Tate and coyle outdoors, Great guy!

Ethan likes to refer to it as a "safety hatchet". A mishit is still going to stick as opposed to glancing or breaking a handle. Quite a bit lighter than an axe (or even a hatchet) and handier all around.

He's a little new to what we think of as normal knife practices. Once he gets a big blade, and really uses it he'll see that he only needs an axe for building cabins old school method. :D

My god! What have you people done to me? I have had my 16 for awhile and I love it. Had my 14 less than a week and I already am having dreams of the 9. Someone needs to lie to me and tell me that I don't need it. I'm too poor to get another knife right now. But anyways, my vote would have been for the 9.

Ok, here ya go.
No, don't, stop, wait, you don't need it.

there, now get out there and get your 9. :D

When faced with the decision of going to the woods with a 9 or a 4, both usually end up packed. :D I'm going to also go with the 4, though, as the recommendation. It's a great blade that easily replaces a small hatchet. I really didn't like mine when I got it and nearly sold it to a friend. However, I decided to give it a fair shot by making it my only knife for a weekend at the cabin. It ended up being the tool everyone used for splitting down wood for our outdoor griddle, cut up a mostly down pine tree for the campfire, shaved kindling to start the fires, and a lot more. After it was put to real use, I can't imagine being without one.

The BK4 on said trip, along with the i-beam griddle.

Funny question the OP posed because a while back, I was heavily debating between the 4 and the 9. My wife had put the kibosh on any knife purchases for a while......then in an unprecedented moment of weakness, I ordered a 4, 9, two marked down 15's, and another 16....and an apology and a massage appointment for my wife.

Out of the three, the only one I don't have is a 4. I love the 9. And the 7 is great too. With a good edge the 7 can work well.

But the 4, holy crap, I need to get one so bad. Just so I can mod it like GSOM and Jonny1280.

Lovin that swedge and bluing!!
