And so it begins... About to order another Becker.

In all seriousness though, can a BK-4 completely replace the need for a hatchet? I carry a hatchet (Estwing Sportsman's Hatchet) 99% of the time I'm camping or going for an extended stay in the woods. I like having a great field knife, but love the reliability of a hatchet.

I'm really leaning towards the BK-4...this will only sweeten the pot.

Out of the three, the only one I don't have is a 4. I love the 9. And the 7 is great too. With a good edge the 7 can work well.

But the 4, holy crap, I need to get one so bad. Just so I can mod it like GSOM and Jonny1280.

Lovin that swedge and bluing!!

Thank you. Funny thing is that I'd love to get another one and do a Dex-inspired mod, with spine curves to compliment the edge profile. As it is getting ready to modify my 4 a little more. It really needs some slabs to go with the nose job.

If you like the BK2, but find it a little heavy, give the BK10 a look. I use my BK9 more often, but the BK10 is my favorite Becker.

I see you're leaning toward the BK4, which is fine. I have one (two actually), but I've yet to learn to maximize the BK4's potential. When I bought them, Dex at CoyleOutdoors had them on sale for about $67.

As others have said, eventually you'll end up with a 9 (and probably a 7, too) in addition to the 4 and 11 you are now considering. The order varies, but the end result is the same. :-)

Enjoy!

Alright, in just a few days I'll be ordering my BK-4. That thing looks like a beast and I can't wait to play around with it.

Now...I've had my eye on a smaller, EDC fixed blade. Would the 11 work well for that?

Also, I thought my brother-in-law's BK-2 was a little too big and heavy for my tastes. Over the last few days, I've had the opportunity to use it more and I'm starting to fall for it... It might be the next on the list.

How is it for processing wood or feather sticking? The reason I like the BK-16 so much is that it is nimble. Would the BK-10 make a good bush knife?

...and after using my brother-in-law's BK-17, I think I should have chosen that over the 16. Too bad the trade forums are restricted to paying members of the site...

Hmmm... I would have thought they would perform the same. Same profile but one has a clip, right?

No. The 17 still has a saber grind. 16 is now full flat.

Here's some feather curls I made real quick last night for you, calm. I was going to make more, but when I started using my 2 I realized it needed sharpening. So, I ended up doing that. I'll post up some feather curls from the 2,5,&10 in a little while. But, for now here's the 4&9. That poplar I used was really dry.

Thank you, Rick!

As this thread grows, the harder my decision becomes, haha. As of now, it is 60/40 on which I'll with the BK-4 in the slight lead. Aesthetically, I like the 4 more. I like Machete/Kukri style of blades when I'm in Central America. I know there's a Becker Kukri coming out a soon, but it looks a little too short for what I want it for. I'm looking to pair it with my BK-16, which will hopefully be a 17 soon.

...if I do get the BK-17, I won't count that as my second Becker purchase. Just a replacement of my Becker that was a gift.

Hah! As if it will let you part with it!

More likely the 17 *will* be your second. ;)

The BK21 Reinhardt Khukri is longer than the 4 by like 3 or 4 inches I think. There's a side by side pic in the "Khukri question" thread.

Not as nimble as the 16, but more nimble than the 9, 4, or 2. The mid-sized knives are a compromise. They are not as good as the tweeters on detailed work, and not as good as the large knives on heavy duty tasks. But they can do the former better than the latter, and vice versa. It comes down to what tasks you will need the knife for and whether weight will be an issue. What I like about the 10 is it is a jack of all trades. It can baton, make feather sticks, do detail work, etc. it just can't do the big stuff as well as a big knife, or the detail stuff as good as a 16 or 17. If weight doesn't matter I take a big and little knife (e.g. a 9 and 16). If weight does matter I might take just the 10 (and a necker, probably). Narrower range of performance, but generally enough to get 95% or the same work done. YMMV.

But if you like the 2, the 10 is a good one to look at. Hope this helps.
