And Then There Were Two

The last year and a half has not been kind to my family. With the death of two siblings and some cousins, you really set up and take notice of what is important in life.

Combine that with all the COVID 19 happenings, Mother Nature can certainly make sure you think about your own mortality and old age.

Which brings me here. I have been thinking how my knife needs have changed over the years and how they will possibly change in the future.

So, here is the $64 dollar question. If you can only keep two folding knives out of what you currently own for use in your old age, what two folders would you pick and why.

lefty PM2 - ergonomics, size and blade shop. I held off getting one, was pleasantly surprised when I did and carry it more than I thought
lefty Spider Monkey - my first real knife that cost >$100, so sentimental but also a great little knife

I guess I should answer my own question.

The first two that came to mind are a full-size Griptilian and a SAK because that is what I am finding works well at the moment.

But, one of my sisters and mother
both had some loss of hand motor skills as they got older. Especially my sister. Hers was really bad.
if I follow suit, no Swiss Army knife for me.

I have two little Lockbacks that are easy to open and easy to close. One is a Gerber LST. The others is a Cutco 1891 folder. Not really worth anything so if I loose it while having a senior moment, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s easier to use than the LST so the LST is out of the game.

OK, knife number one:
Cutco 1891.

Knife number two? At this point I have to say my Benchmade Griptilian 550. Or maybe a 551. I own both and have more experience with the 551.

During this year I am was thinking about this a lot actually. I don’t know why - hard year, all this negative in every news channel, or maybe simply edging))))
Only two folders is are hard question. If I need to left only one it would be more easier - the large lefty Sebenza 21. This is not the knife that I like more then the others in emotional meaning, but it will cover all my needs.
Second one... I am really don’t know :( I love my lefty Military, great cutter, love my Recon-1 tanto in CTS, and what about ZT 300, almost indestructible beast )))))

Stay strong man. I hope the best for you.

For two folders I wouldn’t be hesitant to use, the Cold Steel Voyager XL and Recon 1 are plenty enough knife for me.

Sorry for your losses

I’m a fixed blade edc guy most days but I do like folders

if I was to only keep two of my folders ...... that’s a tough one

at the moment some type of Yojimbo

they are just a great edc ....big fan of the grip they facilitate

and this big Gitano from Gudy ....... it’s just a really neat knife

Bastler Bastler , What two folders would you pick and why?

Since you asked, I looked in the drawer where I keep my rotation knives and gave it some thought. I would keep the knives that tell a story when I hold them in my hands. First would be the Otter Messer Hippekniep that I bought in Solingen when my wife and I toured the Otter Messer factory. My Case Copperlock also has some history that makes it significant to me, I couldn't let that one go. There are others, like the little Bemnchmade Impel that was a gift from a good friend and the Buck 500 that I bought new in 1988. Tough call, really.

Sorry for your losses.

I settled this some time ago. It's all a compromise but for me it's a Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight and Dragonfly 2. Those cover everything I will ever need out of folding knives.

Spyderco Yojimbo 2. Mine is customized, but it is very easy to close. I have arthritis already (have since I was 25, now 41) which is important to me. It's not difficult to sharpen either. Most useful blade shape to me.

Matt Bailey Model 2 flipper geek edition. Mother gave it to me when I was in the hospital after an adrenal crisis and diagnosis of liver failure. 4 years later she occasionally asks to see it. It's very cool.

Guys, Thank you for your concern but, I am fine, really.

My sisters are not suffering any longer and I am OK with it all. At least for now.

I just wanted you folks to understand what is the motivation behind my question. That is the only reason for the comments about my family.

Less concern and more about knives.

Sorry to hear about the situation, but am glad to see you are doing fine. Stay strong!

For the $64 question, it hasn't really crossed my mind just yet, but I would imagine those 2 choices will naturally emerge after I giveaway or sell most of the knives I own. But I am sure I will at least keep a SAK close to me, it's just too handy not to have one.

A SAK was one of my first thoughts also but, I had to take loss of dexterity as I get older into consideration. That is why, for me, the Cutco won over the SAK.

There are a lot of negative things about the Cutco but, it is light weight and easy to use. It really won because of ergonomics.

Two knives is a tough one. The first one would be my Spyderco Slysz Bowie, although I never carry it...could cut down a hotel with that thing.
The other one would likely be my as-new CRK large Reg Sebbie, or as-new large model 21...neither of which I ever carry. I did carry my Zaan for severl yrs, but that one collects dust also at this point.
I do carry daily my TRM Atom, which is a thin-bladed slicing wonder, along with a cross-draw 3.5" fixed Busse or Bradford 3.5" Guardian. Both are great EDC's for casual carry.
(I lost one of two sons several months ago, so fully understand. A father should not outlive his kids...)
