And Then There Were Two

I think I would keep my Explorer and my Benchmade 550-1 Griptilian. (the high-end one with the Spydiehole)

I am assuming that is a SAK Explorer.

I am finding that I like the SAK/Griptilian combo.

I do find the SAK heat treatment a little softer than I want. You?

Mine is just a plain black Zytel model.

I used to have an early production orange model. I miss that one. I think the early ones are better than what you can get now.

Seven or eight years ago I bought out a store in South Carolina of all the old Gerber LST knives that they had at or below retail. Another customer was curious why I was buying twenty or so knives like that for close to $400, and the store owner told him that I was crazy and that I probably thought I could make money on them. He tried to push some Henkels slipjoint folders with stag handles if I really wanted something collectible / valuable. I passed on the Henkels and later sold several of the Micro LST's in bright colors on Ebay for as much as $400 each, which surprised me.

I agree that the older ones were made a little nicer than the current production.

Interesting question, sabre cat sabre cat - I'm sorry for the events that inspired it, though.

This wouldn't be too hard for me - I'm not as hardcore as GatorMedic GatorMedic , but I still only have 6 folding knives right now. I'd keep my GEC toothpick - it's my EDC knife. And I'd keep my Mini Grip with 20CV and G10, because sometimes one-hand opening is helpful. I can open the toothpick one-handed, but it's not exactly smooth, and if I'm up on a ladder or something, I'd rather just have a true one-hander.

Another reason for me to keep the Mini Grip is that it's my wife's favorite knife. When I told her about this thread she immediately said "One of your two better be the Mini Grip." :D It's the easiest one for her to open, and she feels more comfortable with a locking folder than with a slipjoint. Once I showed her how to open slipjoints 'old-guy style' she can do it, but she still prefers the ease of the Axis lock.

During the lockdowny top 3 users are the PM3 LW, Manix 2 lw (thanks bikerector) amd the Gerber LST. A close 4th is the alox cadet.

Taking these choices down to 2 would have to be the PM3 LW for it's ease of opening and the LST quite simply for the fact that if I was to be honest about what I have in my pocket it would be that little LST most of the time. My wife loves it, I cit boxes with it, tape, I carry it when I run out and play paintball. In sweatpants and dress clothes.

Gotta love little lockbacks for how slim of a carry they are.

Sounds like you need to get your wife her very own Benchmade Mini Grip ;)

GatorMedic GatorMedic !

Still only two for you? Effectively only one because yours are both Bugouts.

In some ways you are my Heroine because how you dialed everything back and simplified your life.

My remaining sister and myself are taking it slow disposing of my other sister’s belongings. But, there is tons of stuff left to deal with.

Thank you for responding. Always a pleasure to read your comments.

Still just those two. And yes, effectively only one because my green Bugout has been relegated to the safe until I wear out or lose my blue Bugout.

I understand where you're coming from. My step-father just passed last month, and he had a lot of stuff despite my mom trying to get him to scale back for the last 5-10 years. She has been overwhelmed by the burden of going through it all and deciding what to do with it whether sell, donate, give away, whatever. It has her so stressed out, on top of it being an obviously very emotional time. So what's going to happen? I'm going to drive the 8+ hours over there on my only break from work and grad school to help her take care of it. Instead of enjoying a holiday and taking time for myself to relax before I start up again for the all consuming task of full-time job and full-time grad school, I'm going to be working on all his stuff. Like I said, I don't want to be a burden on my loved ones when I pass. Yes, I have stuff. Yes, they'll still have several things to deal with upon my death. But spending a day every couple months culling through my belongings to see what no longer is needed or serves a purpose and taking care of it right then, well that saves them an extra day of them not having to do it should I suddenly die. That's the way I look at it.

I've offered, but she won't carry it - women's pockets tend to be terrible, so I carry it and hand it to her when appropriate.

Buy one for her anyway. Pick her favorite color scales and just do it. Get her a matching SAK for her keys.

You can tell her the Benchmade is for a 72 hour kit your building for her if nothing else.

Not as hardcore as GatorMedic GatorMedic ? You might be!:)

Listen, she had five or six knives once. It was probably the best thought out collection I have ever seen. Work knife, camp/field knife, etc.

I was so impressed that I’ve had the goal to scale back ever since. The problem is I enjoy knives. Always have.

Ask her what she had. It was probably the most logical and rational set of folders I have ever seen here on BF.

I've read the whole thread where she scaled down, and thought it was fascinating. I think a lot about how much stuff I own, and not wanting to have too much. Maybe I'll scale down to just one knife (plus a backup), but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at right now, so I don't think that will be anytime soon.

I have two Boker 6 bay knife vaults.

Because I have a habit of grouping my knives in sets of three, one vault will give me one EDC set and one for dress. The other will be used for family heirlooms and such. That’s the plan. A far cry from two knives.

My problem is that I have too many knives and I’m not willing to get rid of most of them yet. Plus, people keep giving me knives.

Thanks for the kind words yall :) The number is not important. It's about being intentional with the knives you choose to own, which it sounds like you both are either doing or attempting to do. I own only two because that's what works for me at this moment. I realized I would miss carrying the Bugout when I grabbed my Mini Crooked River instead even though I really liked that knife as well. So it made sense for me just to have a Bugout; that way I can carry my favorite knife every single day. I am most likely going to buy a third knife though--the updated Benchmade Steep Country--because I want a fixed blade for future hunting plans.

Of the knives I own, I'd hold on to my Spyderco Manix 2 and my SAK Tinker, for sure.
They both tend to go everywhere with me (the SAK stays on my keychain and the Manix 2 lives in my pocket). Between the 2, I feel like I can handle practically any cutting tasks that could come up in my environment.
