Andrew Demko still with CS?

One thing is not yet clear to me. If Andrew Demko is no longer with Cold Steel, can Cold Steel continue to use the Triad Lock?
He said in an interview that CS actually held the patent for it, not him.

Many of the patents for locks have both Andrew and Mike on them and assigned under cold steel. there is actually quite a few out there and other items like blow guns and axe sheaths and all kinds of stuff. some are Andrew only and assigned to cold steel. some are Andrew and Mike assigned to cold steel. I dont know who has what as far as ability to use or not use? Mike Wallace would know.

my speculation is cold steel can use or maybe have exclusive rights to use the tri-ad or they wouldn't have bought the company.....I could be wrong though.

found it....

says inventor is Andrew, but assigned to gsm now.

Yes, I believe Cold Steel, (under Lynn Thompson), actually purchased the rights to the Triad Lock, and under his agreement with Mr. Demko, Mr. Demko would receive royalties from each knife sold with the lock system. I imagine that is exactly how it will continue to be 😊

I asked Demko via IG if he’s still able to make triad lock knives under his own brand or as custom, unfortunately he mentioned that he has lost the ability to make triad lock knives. He still holds patent for scorpion and shark so those are the locks he can make for now.

It’s kinda ironic that the man who invented the triad lock cannot make any knife with it. I hope CS/GSM will not stop or reduce the triad lock model just to avoid paying Demko royalties.

Can’t wait for the triad lock patent to expire so the man himself can make more models with this. Also hope other high quality production companies can use it. IMO it’s still the best lock out there.

Since Andrew Demko is the inventor of the Triad Lock, he obviously has the ability to think up a new and maybe totally revolutionary lock system. Sometimes it's these types of cut ties between designer & manufacturer, that may bring forth some new great stuff 🤞😊🤞

youre still there? we are gonna see more of your designs, I hope? i can't speak for everyone but im very excited to see what ya have coming up for us......
I would love to see more designs from Mr. Wallace as well.........especially If they feature the Triad Lock

I should be receiving a small extra bit of finance later this year. I will invest it wisely.......Hahaha, I crack myself up.

Gonna use the extra cash to stock up on my fave CS lines so as to last me until I'm dead. Won't have to give a rat's behind about the future direction of CS or any QC issues if they drop production standards. Gonna get mine done like a dinner.

Thanks for sharing this. That sounds rough. So I guess he can’t sell the custom AD-10 anymore?

On the other hand, the Scorpion and Shark locks look more than tough enough for any reasonable knife task.

Doubt he's sweating it. The TriAD is great, but I'm sure he'll do just fine with the Shark Lock as his new "bread and butter" offering.

No market researcher but from my observations in the real world the number of people that know how a tri-ad lock works is effectively 0% of the total number of people that buy a knife with a tri-ad lock.

Most people I know that bought a CS knife is because they watched a video of CS staff hack a pig corpse to pieces and thought it was cool. The fact the knife has a demko lock is inconsequential.

I remember Demko stating that it was very difficult to make the custom AD10s there was alot of hand fitting to make it right which probably bumped up the cost alot; with the AD20 its a much simpler design and is easier to make.

Another great interview with Mr. Demko. He talks alot about his time working with Cold Steel.
Mr. Demko displaying happiness over the 4 Max Scout, and the interviewer calling the knife "silly". I found that exchange disappointing. I hope that the essence of Cold Steel survives through Mr. Demko, if this whole thing turns into a lawn sausage.

I just realized that this 1st production AD20 is a 3" blade knife; that sucks im out on this one unless a larger one comes out ; i hate 3" blades and i wont spend 150 on one no matter what it is...

Funny, that's why I want to get one...will compliment my regular one perfectly, and is legal in more places.

crap. I dont care for blades under 3.25 range. I'm out too. wanted a full size production one.

Thanks for sharing these kinds of videos, guys... Good stuff!
Andrew really seems to be one heck of a nice guy, it really comes through in these videos 😊

I found it quite the eye opener when he speaks about having gone with Lynn Thompson to one of Cold Steel's Taiwan manufactures and discussing with them on how they can keep pricing reasonable. Andrew then explains how a representative of that Taiwan firm then responded by recommending that Lynn allow them to just make the product using Aus6 steel and just list them as being made of Aus8, (as one way of keeping the production costs down). Andrew goes on to say that the Rep told them that some of Cold Steel's competitors, (which also had products made at that manufacturer), had done exactly that... But that Lynn Thompson responded with not wanting any part of such a fraudulent act. Andrew explains how Japanese Aus8 steel has received some unwarranted criticism, since many knives being sold on the market as Aus8 were actually Aus6.
I know Aus8 is not a specialty super steel, but it's generally considered an upgrade over Aus6, and for Aus6 steel to be sold to the public as being Aus8... Not cool at all!
I know Andrew obliviously kept the names of those competitors doing those scams out of the discussion, but I sure would love to know which ones did/does such things. We can only trust the word of these firms when they list their product materials, and purposely lying about a blade steel like that... Well, sure does not instill any confidence about anything they may claim about their products.
I totally understand a little bit of hype in a company's marketing, but to outright lie about the materials... That's dishonesty at it's purest, (imo).
