Hey Andy - I won a contest (sponsored by Rotte) on the WSS forums - and he is going to spring for 100 dollars toward any custom maker of my choice. I figured because, not only I don't have any of your awesome knives that I can keep, but also that you have been a little slow - I would choose you!

I already have an idea for what I want - but if you are game - do you mind making this design process public - it would showcase your ability as a maker to make new deisigns.

I want to use your new fat scandi ground bushcrafter in 01 as a base.

What say you?

TF

p.s. Man am I fortunate!

Sure thing. I'm honored. You've certainly handled a good bit of my work. You got a drawing?

Here is the Running Design ideas:

I want to blend these two knives:

I want the handle from the top one and the blade from scandi lady finger.

1) Blade thickness - around .150 (don't sweat that detail too much - your stock runs about that).

2) Blade height - around .900 (give or take - this will likely match your lady finger blade height) give or take - but not too wide - I want the spear point to be natural and good for drilling when needed - think spear point of the BRKT Aurora.

3) Blade length - around 3.900 - nothing over four inches for sure - I want it to be legal in most places.

4) Handle Length and OAL - Around the specs of your Bushcrafter - it measures at 8.400 in OAL - 4.600 in handle and 3.900 in blade (around there).

5) Thumb jimping - if it is not a PITA - or make it an option for others...

6) Mosaic front pin - one bulls eye lanyard tube - color to contrast handle material - this can be optional as well.

7) Dual wood material, but chosen for their durability over all. A stabilized wood or a hard wood like Ironwood.

8) Make sure the transition from the scales to the ricasso is non abtrusive. I think your Woodcraft knife may be fine - just take into consideration that most bushcrafters are choked up on to allow for fine work - and the thumb and fingers need to be able to grasp the flat of the blade without being uncomfortable.

9) Also I want you to flare the butt end of it slightly to prevent from slipping off the handle (if you can make that look right) like the BRKT Aurora handle has. You current bushcrafter has a .735 handle width at the ass end - I am thinking around .800.

10) Scandi Grind where the bottom of the blade is straight and long, not curved. Look at Kosters Bushcraft edge:

KostersBladeandSheath004.jpg

See how from the Ricossa to the point where it sweeps up in to the spear point it is flat. Rounded stock make for a transition doing fine work that is not as comfortable as with a flatter grind. Your blade on top in the picture at the top of this post is a perfect flat ground blade into the sweep. Make the blade not so tall and a spear point - and you have what I have in mind.

Sweet, this knife sounds awesome Talfuchre. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Wow - Rotte! AWESOME.

I will make you a deal - you buy one - I make pants for it - for having a cool contest!

You get to pick the details on the sheath!

This is turning out great, good way to help out these awesome makers on this forum.

Nope - but I have a description to start with.

I want this to be a true bushcrafter - but my specs if you don't mind - So, I want the handle from the top one and the blade from scandi lady finger. I even want that penetrator - tip it just looks cool!

I have a sabre ground Bushcrafter in my hand for WadeH (I am fairly sure) and I love the handle on that - the palm swell height is about 1.211 (for reference)

1) Blade thickness - around .150 (don't sweat that detail too much - your stock runs about that).

2) Blade height - around .900 (give or take - this will likely match your lady finger blade height)

3) Blade length - around 3.900 - nothing over four inches for sure - I want it to be legal in most places.

4) Handle Length and OAL - Around the specs of your Bushcrafter - it measures at 8.400 in OAL - 4.600 in handle and 3.900 in blade (around there).

5) Thumb jimping - I LOVE your new thumb jimping - in it thin - but provides good traction.

6) Mosaic front pin - one bulls eye lanyard tube - color to contrast handle material.

7) Dual wood material - I need your help deciding that one though.

8) The only changes to your current Bushcrafter handle is that I want you to depart in two ways. Taper the front of the handle scales slightly to allow for my thumb to easily slide up to the blade when doing the chest level grip and a fine work grip.

Also I want you to flare the butt end of it slightly to prevent from slipping off the handle (if you can make that look right) like the BRKT Aurora handle has. You current bushcrafter has a .735 handle width at the ass end - I am thinking around .800.

Can you picture what I am saying?

Oh, I'm all over that!

If Andy says, "yes." :D

Yes!

I'll throw in some sweet handle material of the stabalized variety, and try to make y'all proud.

One thing. If the wood is burley, there is no reason to do layers. Kinda detracts from Gods work IMO.

This sounds seriously cool. I think Andy may also have won a little something in that contest ...

I hope so!

Andy - You know what Burl I really like:

Oh - and I have been thinking about a name for this one.

How about the Arete Bushcrafter?

(Pronounced: Ar - eh - tay)

Staying with my Greek theme - Arete means Excellence or Fulfillment of a thing. To reach ones purpose.

What do you think?

Just reading this I'M stoked (and envious)! What a cool thread. Andy, I've been following your work here on BF for a while now. I'm very impressed:thumbup:.

Cannot wait to see this one finished.

5) Thumb jimping - I LOVE your new thumb jimping - in it thin - but provides good traction.

Andy does jimping now? I need to send my Hunter back for a little TLC from it's maker....

Yeah - he does - it is very slight - but works very well I think.

If anyone else wants in on this order - I have a feeling it would not hurt Andy's feelings to do a small run of these! ;)

TF

TF - that had better be my Bushcrafter in your sweaty little hand! ;)

I tried to send another email today but I don't think it went through as I was having Yahoo issues at home. I'll try from work in a little bit.

Cool idea. Maybe Andy will get confident enough in the penetrator tip with these that it will become a permanent option. :D

Andy,

Rotte upped the anty - and I wonder if your game. He wants to see if you will make two firesteel handles from some blanks we will send you?

Then I will make sheaths to house them!

WA,

It IS your's. It is in my hand because I am waiting to get final word from you - and then off to wet form! ;)

The knives that are jimped have to be softened along the spine. I don't usually do this, so if you have an unjimped knife, it cannot be jimped. It would just destroy my file. Future knives can be jimped though, and I may just start jimping them all. It is very slight though. I bought the smallest size checkering file I could get.
