Annoying comments

Over the weekend I had somebody politely inform me that what I did for a living was illegal. Apparently, I am an illegal weapons manufacturer. In their World, knives are weapons, weapons are either regulated or prohibited and making them in my garage is no different than someone building pipe-bombs in their basement. This was a seemingly respectable, intelligent adult in her late 40's.

No Joke.

My response?... In the company of about 6-8 other folks (who were all staring at me), I calmly replied "Wow, um... perhaps you should do a little research into that completely asinine statement and let me know how that pans out you. Hmmm... regulated or prohibited? Does the food in your house cut itself?" Her response... "Kitchen knives are regulated by the government. You can't use a kitchen knife in a crime." A quick look to her hubby, who was facepalming himself at the time, started me into uncontrollable laughter... I was no good.

The only thing my wife said as she held me under the arm and guided me away was, "Well, at least you didn't have to hit her husband."
Absolute true story.......

Rick

you're wife sounds pretty cool and understanding like mine:thumbup:
I've been that exact same position, and seeing their significant other embarrassed by comments they made is priceless;)

Agreed... Unfortunately, I accelerated right past the reasoning/educating phase. At that point, it would have been like debating someone who supports a Flat Earth.

There are times when the only sane response is to walk away and get another beer, leaving the hopelessly ignorant to wallow in a bottomless tar-pit of their own idiocy.

However, there are also times when it's just plain fun to tell the truth, even though you know nobody's listening. Then... walk away and get another beer.

Then again, there are times to speak reasonably, pass out business cards (both your own and those of organizations that support you/vice-versa), and THEN go get another beer. Who knows, someone with their head outside their ass might follow you.

P.S. knocking a fool out, although often gratifying, is generally ill-advised. Glad it didn't come to that, Rick. You'd look ridiculous in a jailhouse-orange jumpsuit. :D

Besides, I don't think they encourage people in jail to make knives. Shivs, yes... knives, no.

I was talking with a guy the other day about something he wanted to make (he wanted to make a bell), and he was trying to figure out to harden the steel piece he had. I told him that the piece he had might not have enough carbon in it for it to ever get hard. He said, "That's okay. I'm going to quench it in used motor oil and it'll pick up carbon from the oil."

I usually email and pm a person when I am about to start on a knife. I had the knife ground and heat treated and the scales shaped and drilled. So I email this gentleman in march to make sure he still wants the knife. I told him that I would be done with the knife in the following week, and then begin making the sheath the week after. I emailed him three times and pm'd him twice on another forum. No answer at all. I got read reciept from the emails and he was active on the forums the same days as the emaills. So I email him again this week. I have been stood up before, and instead of finishing this knife I could finish one from someone who still wants and communicated. Here is his reply finally.

Frank, you emailed me on march 10th over a month ago that you worked on the handles and were going to make the sheath the next week.Apearantly you are not a man of your word.I do not want the knife anymore I can only assume that it would be piss poor quality at best,I do not do business with a liar.

:eek::thumbdn:

I knew he would come up with something like this when he wouldn't reply. It just took him a while to come up with something original.

I'm pretty sure tempering in a potato or cornbread would not work. As long as there's moisture left in the food article, it's not going to get much above the boiling point of water. Food you cook does not get as hot as the oven....

Very disappointed in you Frank... :(

I always say this and it's the main reason I don't do gun and knife shows any more... A guy will look at a $150 hunter and start in about the pricing and how a Wal-mart knife is just as good...... while this guy has Zeiss binos on, $800 in scentlok, $200 boots and a $2000 rifle that's he's just bought. I point out how Wal-mart gear is just as functional as the other stuff he's bought, some people understand, some people don't.

The other reason I hate those shows are the people talking about the pawpaw's knives he made from files and that they were the best ever made and I should use file steel. I ask where those blades are now, they get huffy, I laugh and lose a sale.
