Another bad Bear attack !

One element that seems largely ignored is the hunting of bears has largely fallen off. Bears are less likely to have any fear of humans as we pose them no real threat.

There's bears all over. One of the biggest issues is the people in camp grounds feeding them (possibly by accident) teaches them to forage in the camp ground. The presence of humans has become a dinner bell.

A few years back, a fellow was talking about an encounter he'd had with a bear in the Rocky Mountains. He was asleep in one of those mummy style sleeping bags when he woke up because the bear was rolling him round the campsite. He had a 44 revolver and a Bowie knife on his belt but couldn't reach either so he commenced shrieking like a little girl . . . and the bear went away.

This is why i will not pack a gun. carry it on a chest rig, shoulder rig, or belt rig.. unless you are in an area where it is illegal to carry, then of course, hide it.

Being attacked while you sleep is my worst nightmare. Habitualized black bears, like you might find in Yosemite, are kinda scary b/c they don't fear man. Most truly wild black bears I've seen are skittish and dart into the woods. A few weeks ago I had a black bear wander into my camp 3 times, sneaking up at night. At times, it was at most 20 feet away, probably about the same size as the one in this attack [150-200 lbs]. The only thing you can do is be scrupulous about your camp, keep food far away from your sleeping area, cook far away and try to make a bit of noise when you're near rivers and other loud natural features. Damn, I hate hearing stories like this, if it had been a grizz, there may not have been a happy ending
