Another Christmas Opinel modified FINAL PICS

That antlers gives amazing ancient look,to nicest Opinel i have ever seen.

Great job and a clever way to keep the original ring lock. I don't think I would have thought of that.

OK, forget all that. I figured it out when I realized you can't see the pin I was talking about. ;-)) I cut the original handle about an inch back of the ring and tapered the stub to go into a hole I drilled in the Moose antler, then epoxied the wooden pin in and pinned it, then cut the slot for the blade through the antler and copper pin. Hope this is clearer than mud ;-)) Should have taken picyures of the work in progess.

Best regards

Thanks for the explanation, I didn't ask too clearly...wife says I don't communicate well, and I'm beginning to believe her. It makes a lot of sense as I was also wondering how long it took you to get the collar/lock ring to fit so nicely, great idea!

Heck, I think I am going to be on the lookout for antlers on the trails and see if I can find a way to get a re-handled Opi here soon before boot :D
I don't think I will find anything this beautiful though...

Goodness gracious, man--that's GORGEOUS!

That is stunning. Thanks for the explanation of what you used and how, and especially for the pictures. I love how well the lanyard and sheath fit the aesthetic of the handle-- "refined rustic." :)

Beautifully done!

Posts like these make always make me go looking for the 'drooling' smiley emoticons in the editor (still hoping for that in the next vBulletin upgrade).

That is absolutely beautiful work. That's all I can say.

After all the discussion here about Opinels I had to get some. This is a number 8 that I took apart and rehandled with a piece of very aged Moose antler. The rack was hung outside under an open porch for about 90 years so had a thick bark and lychen growing on it. After sanding, the antler shows all the crazing from exposure, so beautiful IMO. Added a lanyard with a Mammoth ivory slide bead and made it a winter coat out of dyed Moose hide. Forced a dark vinegar patina and dyed the handle with Fiebings. Man, do these things take a scary sharp edge, it's replacing my CV soddie as my every day carry. Sorry for the bad pics, time for a new camera.

Best regards

Robin

Beautifully done, I particularly like the sheath.

Also...looks a bit like you cut a nail nick into the right side of the blade...? Is that right, or are my eyes playing tricks?
