another day hike: two of my favorite spydercos.

Ahh, I love seeing the posts of winter. You may not have much snow, but at least you have (had?) some. 63* this morning here shattered a 133 year old record.

how do you find the sheagh for the spyddrco, and how often you get rolls or chips in it

being a lefty i appreciate that spyderco made it ambidextrous. there's a plastic lining inside though that's only about 2" long that covers the tip area and when i don't slide the knife in completely straight then the tip snags between it and the leather and i have to pull it back out slightly and re-insert it...i wish they just either didn't put it in or made it a full-length length liner...it's been 2 yrs now that i've had this knife so by now i'm so used to it that i barely snag it anymore - muscle memory i guess.

i had a slight roll when it was brand new but after 1-2 sharpenings it hasn't happened since. i did have a tiny chip near the belly awhile back (it has since disappeared after 4-6 sharpenings) but that was my fault. i had a piece of wood that i was feather-sticking resting against the ground and when my knife slipped it hit a rock that the snow was covering up...now, i make sure i put a wide piece of wood at the base or way off the ground when doing that...keeping it absolutely at it's sharpest on every trip also helps since i don't have to put as much downward force and reduces cutting straight through.

Nice journey - plus, your post has inspired me to use my Nalgene flask again! Did it have enough water to serve its purpose? thanks in advance

thanks! i'm thinking of attaching the nalgene sleeve on my pack's waist belt too and carrying it that way but haven't gotten around to trying it.

usually i'm drinking lots of water on the drive there so i'm fully hydrated when i leave the parking lot so yes, that 10 oz of water was enough to get me through until my lunch break. i did however carry an extra 1.5 liters inside my pack and that's what i used for the hot chocolate & soup for lunch then topped off the nalgene again just before hiking out.

overall, i like not having a bladder more than i thought! i knew exactly how much water i had...too often with the camelbak i either barely made it back to the car with enough water or i ended up lugging an extra liter or two un-used because it was too hard to check (more like i'm too lazy to pull the bladder out of the pack to see) how much water is in there still.

Great pictures. We just got 5 inches of snow, looked like this a couple of days ago...

thanks! nice pic..that's my kinda hiking weather! it has that spooky swamp kinda atmosphere.

Your post makes me wanna head out again to enjoy the snow!

thanks! yeah, this weather pattern is ridiculous - 2 days later we hit a high of 59° what really irks me is that i bought these expensive set of snowshoes two years ago but only got to use it twice...i'm still waiting for a big snow fall to play with a snow shelter overnighter but it looks like this is the 3rd winter where i get jipped again.

not enough snow but yet it's icy/wet enough that i can't go mountain biking either...but then it's too cold to ride on the street...sigh. i gotta find my outdoors fix some other way.

Thanks for sharing he pics!

you're welcome!

I can only dream about getting to hike in 7F and ice! I'm sure that might get really old if it was a regular thing, but I'd love to have a week or four of weather like that roll through.

Same here. I have a Camelbak I don't use, and my Manta 25 daypack, but the bladder I like is a 1L Platypus Hoser, especially carried on the outside of the pack(water bottle pocket, whatever).

A lovely set of photographs

Must have been good to get out

thanks! it was my first hike in months so it was definitely much enjoyed.

Thanks for the nice pics. Really makes me want to go camping!

thanks! i'm most active during the winter since it's so much quieter.

i like your gear, especially the knife. great tool.

thanks!

Very nice photos, and some sweet blades too! Thanks for sharing.

thanks!

yeah, the weather pattern here lately is crazy - it ended up going to 59° f two days later!

great idea about hanging a small bladder on the outside! i might just do the same when it's at the height of summer when i'm drinking water a lot more frequently while on the move.

This is awesome. I love this kind of stuff. Thanks for sharing!

thanks!

Awsome pics 'Ol Bud ! Your "spoon" looks very similar to mine

thanks! i see you have mad carving skills too :p

Great story, loved your shot of the sun coming up.

thanks! i'm a night person (it's not unusual for me to wake up later than 12 pm on weekends!) but it's strange that i can wake up and be out the door even before the sun comes up when it comes to hiking.

They had to quit selling that knife for awhile because they were all breaking. They redesigned it and must believe they have all of the issues resolved since they put it back on the market again. Cool looking knife though.

thanks, it's my favorite fixed blade (by far my most used too).

as for the one that snapped...only one spalted maple bushcraft snapped in half so far and no g10 version. straight from sal glesser himself:

Hi LightGuy,

While the break shown was the only incident with the model, we did go ahead and remove the first hole from the tang.

here's the thread which was actually posted recently: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1022946-Spyderco-Bushcraft-Change-to-Skeletonized-Tang.

Could be that was early in the process. They also couldn't keep the handles from breaking and thus wood is no longer an option on that design. If you research it you'll see there were some very unhappy people out there that owned this blade at one time. I've discovered they're folders are pretty weak too. I was looking for a hard use folder and doing some research I learned they pretty much cannot handle any hard use. Every Spydie tested broke very early in the test. Such is life. I've moved on to something more durable, but I still like the looks of many of the spydies.
