Another fantastic custom from NY

I would meet with any knife maker and tell them honesty about their work, whether it be good or bad. I mean really what are they going to do? jump you or get their goons to do you violence? I have not been to Blade in many years but I am thinking about going next year. I generally try to avoid Hotlanta, but I think I will be there this year. I will have about 15 "locals" with me that stay g'd up from the feet up.

1. I can think of about 6 makers off the top of my head that can and will drop most individuals like a bad habit...so don't rule out the sickness, youngster.;)

2. PM or e-mail me your cell, I got two brothers rollin' into Lost Wages tomorrow in a burgundy M5 that could use your "local" advice on where to stay and play, and I want them to peep you for me...big dog.;)

AND....would you ever so kindly quit messing with my TM'd ST-even....I would hate to have to drag in the authorities for infringement.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Neil Ostroff was reading this thread, not one minute ago and still hasn't denied what I've said.

I think we see now, who the coward is.

Here's some advice Neil, just sell knives.

Challenging people to a fight, probably isn't the best way to treat potential customers anyway.

Mental note- if I ever buy a Strider, don't post pics of it on Bladeforums.

Don't want to piss people off.

Knife is fantastic RL, thanks for posting it.

Don't let the detractors bother ya from sharing ....

I may not roll 15 deep ( don't need to , check the slippers on shooter ) , but me and my crew ( kids ) , we have a like for the Strider stuff.

** X-mas gift Bro-Knives from the Strider guys a couple years back**cause that is how the Strider crew rolls son ;)

Never worry about what others think about what you like , be it knives , guns , women , cars or clothes.

Notice too , that many of the same " detractors" have the same posts , maybe not word for word , but the meaning of their posts is the same.

What is absurd is some of the makers who are talking so much crap on design this , design that , flaw this , flaw that...
Having looked at some of their work on their sites , before you start tossing stones , spend some more time paying attention to the details in your own work.

All knives are not supposed to look the same and feel the same !!
My recollection was that the thing that initially got some people's feathers ruffled in that thread was when someone commented that a custom damascus knife in that price range..........or any price range for that matter..........should not have obvious voids in the steel.....and several large ones at that. You can contrast this with another Strider thread where someone said that the knife looked like a "tactical cake cutter." The second comment was a bit on the snarky side, but the first one was legitimate critique of a very expensive knife with obvious flaws. I think that the comments on the placement of the thumbhole on this knife fall into the latter category.

Coop, STeven - well spoken.

Now, could someone please PM me the contact info for the frou frou chi chi forged bowie collectors' club? I wasn't aware that one existed, but I'm keen to join. Now I must return to fluffing up my puffy shirt.

Roger
Don't forget to practice your lispy, affected mid 19th Century English accent while you are at it;)

very expensive knife with obvious flawsobvious flaws

are they flaws if the maker intended them to be there ? Is the finish on a Hartsfield a flaw ? is the as hammered look on a forged blade a flaw if the maker intended it to be left there as part of his design ? are the square blocky handles on knives a flaw or just a preference ?

A very pricey knife I was looking at just last night , the handle was flat and the edges of that handle we all at 90 degree angles (think grasping a 1 x 2 ) , design flaw ? Or difference of opinion ?

Me , I would rather grasp a baseball bat than a 2x4 , but that is my preference only , others have different likes.

But you know what they say about knifemakers , ask 12 knifemakers a question and get 13 different answers ;)

by the way , beautiful pair of fixed blades on your site Joe , stunning and well done , and a screaming bargain at that price !

It very well may have been intentional. I commented on that in that old post because the irregularities on that one blade looked like voids or cold shunts as opposed to the "hammer finishes" that I had seen done and done pretty darn well at that on a couple of other Strider custom pieces. I will say that Mr. Strider has some mad skillz on the old Bader machine. He does some wild grinds that I could not even think about trying.
Thanks for your compliment, sir.

I couldn't read Phil's message for the exact same reason! Fancy that.:)

I think people are referring to not the fact that the thumbhole intersects the primary grind (design choice), but that it intersects the primary grind to different degrees on each side of the blade. IE that blade appears to not be ground symmetrically (execution flaw.) This may also just be the photography.

***Obligatory Steel Grinder's Brotherhood Flame Disclaimer*** I am not bashing another maker, insulting his dog, or harming babies with this post, I'm just clarifying the discussion.

again , not a flaw UNLESS the intention was to be symmetrical , perhaps that wasn't his intent ?

Me personally , I like finding lil flaws ( as some of you call em ) in handmade knives , shows me that they were indeed made by hand. I don't expect purfection in a handmade object , there are many that appear darn close though.

Mr Schott , are your knives , both the handles and the blade 100% symettrical ? I ask that as an honest question, as your website only shows one side of your knives.

I will openly admit , the blades I hand grind are not 100% symettrical , I get close , but they are not purfect. I keep improving , and I am getting closer , but then again my intent is to make knives to be used , not stared at.

Man, here I thought it was in bad taste to pick apart a makers work here on BF.

I'm going to go over to the gallery and start nit picking peoples handmade knives, see how long it takes for people to call me out so I can point them to this thread.

It must be OK, right.

Shotgunner:
I was just curious if some of the guys throwing stones hold themselves to the same standards that they are holding others...which is an honest question and not " picking " apart anyone or their work.

I know, I wasn't refering to you but this whole thread in general.

This is a sad display of this community, nit picking a makers work because of past problems, drudging up the past.

Telling people that their photos aren't welcome.

Were it another maker, the same people nit-picking would be chastizing the nit-pickers for their actions.
