Another online retailer will not ship my order. WHATS HAPPENING?!?

Yesterday I was perusing the inventory of my normal go-to online retailer, Blade HQ. I've been on a Ferrum Forge kick lately and I settled on the Archbishop 3.0. With a 3.5" flipper blade, I've ordered many knives this size in the past from BHQ. I live in NYC and historically, they've only denied shipping me autos. I checked the Legal Blade app and flipper knives under 4" are not strictly illegal in NYC. But, at checkout, they denied me purchase. I emailed them in protest and included a pic of the legality table from the LB app. They responded quickly but basically their answer was tough luck. I thought knife laws were improving. Do you think BHQ has gotten so big now that they are under more scrutiny and have to be more strict with their policies? I noticed recently that Amazon won't ship me flippers any longer either. I shop at many other online stores, but it's sad to see my old faithful removed as an option.
Does anyone have an insight on this? Has anyone else noticed changes with their favorite shops? Any thoughts? Thanks all.

I'm in NJ 30 minutes from NYC, PM me with your email address if you want to ship to my address and pick up your stuff.
Hey man, that's a sweet offer. I wound up getting a QC IQ, but if the offer stands I may take you up on it sometime. I appreciate your willingness to help. This community is endlessly cool and helpful. Good looking out.

I'm having the same problem. Luckily many other vendors still ship here. I'm not sure why they stopped? Even auto's are legal to own in NYC you just can't carry them in public. Swords, axes, bows and arrows are legal to own in NYC. Once again you can't carry them in public but there are no issues with them being in your apartment. I would be curious to know the reasoning behind not shipping to NYC anymore.

Hey, all knives except Ballistic and Cane Swords are legal to own in NYC. You must however carry them concealed. This means totally concealed. If a cop spots a pocket clip, it is a reason to stop you and could lead to legal issues. I try to carry folders in the 5th pocket. I'm a big guy, 6'3" so you'd be surprised what I can fit in that pocket. If you are looking for an auto, Knife-Joy just sent me one last week. Just be aware and if you do get stopped, I've always found that if you show respect, you receive respect in return, at least most of the time. 👊👊👍

Yeah to be honest I'm never worried. I don't act in a way that would get me stopped by law enforcement in the first place. Also, considering what is happening in the city right now I think a law abiding citizen carrying a pocket knife is a non issue to most police.

Disclaimer: I have zero actual knowledge about any internal standards or policies at BladeHQ. However, I'm on the internet, so not only am I obligated to have a very strong opinion on a subject to which I'm truly ignorant, I'm also required to shout my opinion with an inappropriate and undeserved authority as though it is fact, all while possessing no evidence to actually substantiate any of my claims.

With that said, I would reckon that BladeHQ probably shipped a knife to a customer in NYC that was legally allowed to own the knife but not carry or brandish the knife in public. Said customer likely got into some legal trouble brandishing / carrying the knife and tried turning it around on BladeHQ - most likely claiming the retailer did not sufficiently inform the customer of the laws where they live. This could have even resulted in a civil liability lawsuit against BladeHQ.

No matter the outcome, these kinds of cases still cost companies very substantial sums of money in legal representation. If this happened even once, it could likely be enough reason for a retailer to decide that no amount of disclaimers and legal consent forms are worth the risk. A change in policy could also be at the request of an insurance agent / claims adjuster trying to reduce potential risks.

Mind you, I don't have any actually knowledge of any incidents like this that have or could have occurred. I am merely putting forth a hypothetical scenario that could explain this recent change in BladeHQ's policies.

DLT will not ship me an auto in California. Other places don't seem to care. Not sure why.

Autos are illegal in California, at least to carry in public, I think.

As I understand it, NY “weapon” laws are in motion. The local government has expressed an intent to trailblaze weapon restriction laws in an attempt to legally circumvent 2A. It’s possible these laws will cast a broad net and include knives, hatchets, hammers, toasters and pinwheels. OK, I may have exaggerated that last part. Pinwheels are perfectly safe if you don’t push them into someone’s eye…

BHQ might simply be unwilling to be on the wrong side of a changing law?

We have the expert on these things active on the forum. Perhaps Critter Critter can help us understand what’s going on with NY knife law?

I wouldn't be surprised. They seem to act like they're out for vengeance since the Bruen decision. No one will be allowed a weapon of any kind, except for the rich and powerful who will always be protected. I on the other hand am apparently supposed to welcome armed robbers into my home with cookies and snacks so as not to upset them too much. Then when the police show up 10 minutes later they'll sort everything out 🙄

It is legal to carry autos with blade length 1.9''. I don't know that it is restricted to own.
Autos regardless of blade length are legal to own, but for carry must have a sub-2" blade. IIRC that's the only statewide blade length prohibition. Unfortunately there is no pre-emption clause for knives as there is for guns, so local jurisdictions can do whatever the hell they want.
