another question for the gun guys

Hey Guys..

Gauge converters are awesome...

I've got a 12/410 converter thats pretty cool...
Zings 410 slugs out of there like Crazy and is fairly accurate...

I've love a 12/.22 coverter....

My gunsmith was making them up in different calibers for all kinds of stuff..
Pretty nice,, but fairly expensive...

If you don';t have a combo gun I think they are a good idea..Once you learn where the bullet goes,, you can get into the ballpark at least..

If its chambered in .22 LR, look to at using .22 BB or CB loads, or even quieter, .22 CB Cap loads. These aren't hard to find and can still be effective yet quieter; the comment about air rifles is really good, though--lot of really good and powerful airguns are out in the marketplace.

I would keep the shotgun, and buy a 22 revolver. I use a 20 ga. pump and the 12 ga. fans look down on my little Remington.
Buying another long gun is not the answer since a 20 ga. is a great gun. Just add a 22 pistol that can be carried along with your other gear and your all set.

Thanks guys I wasn't expecting stellar results but thought I'd give it a try. looks like I'll pick up small single shot .22 or maybe a marlin papoose, although the airgun idea is not bad either ( what kind of fps should I be looking for? and what call.177 or .22)

Riley, don't get a Marlin papoose. I just got rid of mine at a gun show because even after a trip back to Marlin under warrentee it was unreliable. Alot of failures to eject, with the emty round jammed against the top of the receiver with the loaded round jammed halfway into the chamber. A real beech to unjam that mess.

And I know it was not just mine, but over on the rimfire central site on the Marlin forum they had alot of threads dealing with failure to eject and failure to feed issues with the model 60. The model 60 is the receiver and action that the papoose is based on. A real POS.

Listen to the guys here who recomend a simple bolt action .22 rifle. A Henry mini-bolt is only about 2 1/2 pounds and is very accurite. If you can find a clean used M6 survival rifle buy it. They are great guns. Also New England firearms makes a handy rifle with swichable .410 and ,22 barrels.

One thing I remember reading about using 22 converters in a single shot shotgun was that you needed to mark the chamber edge of the shotgun and the converter so that it went into the shotguns chamber in the same position each time., otherwise the point of impact would change. At one time I was concidering getting a 32 acp pistol round to 308 or 30-06 for small game. Still might.

The advice about getting a Bolt action .22 Rifle is very sound. Save your shotgun for birds, protection, etc. Buy a new .22 rifle. Stay away from used .22's, as most have been shot THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of times. With .22 Shorts or CB caps, both perfect for small game at 25 yards IMHO, the noise will be about like an air rifle.

I almost always buy used, in a 22 rimfire it takes many thousands of rounds of non jacketed, slow, lead bullets to damage a bore.

If the rifle looks worn out it still may shoot like a dream, I look down the bore then check the crown, if they look good and the price is right, buy it. Chris
