Another question for the gun guys

On the "buy while you can" list, I'd grab up the SKS and plenty of ammo before they get listed on the next ban (sure to be coming to a neighborhood near you soon).

As for the Mossberg being the only one that fit you, I'd try other shops. Take a short road trip to another town... hit all the pawn shops, etc. I don't have any personal experience with the 590, but I definitely wouldn't limit myself to the only gun in one store (that fit me). The Rem 870 is incredibly adjustable with different stocks, etc., and is one of the most reliable scatterguns out there... and easy to find.

Have fun shopping :D

Just my .02 (before taxes)

I love my Springfield 1911, but why would a long gun take 2nd place to a pistol?
The pistol is more readily accesible. There are always little children around in my house, and I can more easily keep a pistol ready to go than I can a long gun. I plan on keeping my pistol near my bed and using it to get to my long gun.

I'd get the shotgun first, as it'll compliment your Springfield M1A more than the SKS would.

That makes good sense. I was putting your original question in the context of a survival/BOB context. I think a handgun has certain advantages for SD inside your dwelling.

I don't want to say I'm "lucky" to not have kids, but I sure like leaving a loaded revolver by the bed.

Shotgun.

Get an extra barrel and a pistol-grip as well, and put these accessories into storage.

Copper sabot slugs, OO Buck, and T-steel shot are all good choices. Don't waste yer money on crap like flechettes, bolos, and "dragon breath."

I have friends who love the SKS -- but personally, I never cared much for it or the AKs. The Ruger 10/22, however, is the finest .22 autoloader ever made, and was my favorite rifle to target shoot -- rapid-fired thousands of rounds through one (in 30 & 50 rd mags) without a single jam -- without cleaning it. It was more reliable than an AK or an Uzi.

Looks like a pretty even split so far :D
I would go SKS, I am not a bird hunter and have little use for shotguns. Shoot mine twice a year in the local 3-gun match, sits lonely the rest of the time. Perhaps if home defense is the only use, but the SKS is just so much more capable in many roles. 10/22 is at least as good for SHTF small game anyways, you're covered there.

SKS ammo is more expensive than plinking shotgun ammo, but the 10/22 has you covered for a cheap fun gun too. SKS definitely in danger of banning more than shotguns, ask anyone in California.

Any big name shotgun will be fine. I've had no problem with Mossbergs, get the one that fits you best.

For an SKS put a set of http://www.tech-sights.com/ on it, makes it a ton nicer to shoot, and will be the same system when you save up and move to an AR-15 or other bigger rifle. Get some stripper clips and learn to use them rather than jacking with the mags.

I'd choose SKS, because I think you'd shoot it more than the shotgun. While an occasional round of trap and shooting buckshot at a silhouette target are fun, I can't remember the last time I took out my 870.

I pay $10 for a whole day of shooting at the outdoor rifle range. If I go shoot trap it's $8 a round, 25 clays. If I take my shotgun to the indoor range without a membership it's $10 an hour and I have to shoot buckshot. Even though 7.62x39 ammo isn't as cheap as it used to be, it's still cheaper than 12 gauge ammo.

... America's two biggest threats: zombies, and bears.

the third threat being clinton.

aside: anyone know where i can get a supply of clintonite?

Yeah and the 4th largest threat:

"On the "buy while you can" list, I'd grab up the SKS and plenty of ammo before they get listed on the next ban (sure to be coming to a neighborhood near you soon)."

Fear mongers!

Seriously guys there isnt going to be any "next ban." The people who were supporters have now realized that crimes using those weapons didnt stop because of the ban. They have seen the errors in their ways. Anyone still supporting a ban is in the minority and it wont pass through congress. So no worries.

You didn't use the " :D " smiley, but I'll assume you are kidding.

Or very young.

Right?

I've had an 870 express magnum for about 10 years and I still get all giddy when I take it out.

With the choice between a shotgun or an SKS methinks I would go for the SKS first because of the present price of ammo for them versus a 12 gauge so I could afford to practice with it more often. I don't know much of anything at all about the SKS but if I could I would opt for one with a chrome lined barrel if I could get one simply because their care is more forgiving.

If I were looking for the cheapest to shoot a lot period then I would opt for the Ruger 10/.22 and I would go for the black stock and stainless model personally, once again for the easier care and more forgiving nature of stainless. It can always be smeared with mud or such if need be to camo it to at least some extent. My 10/.22 is like the above with a Simmons 3 X 9 variable brushed chrome scope with fairly large reticules. Not seeing as well as I used to is why I went with the variable with a 9 power. If I were younger or could see well I'd go with a 4 power.

And I'm another fan of the Mossies. :D  I have a Mossie 500 that Barbie and I both like to shoot. It's a lot of fun busting 12 gauge caps from the hip John Wayne style.
If what you are looking for first is a self defense gun then I'd go with the shotgun first. At the short ranges found inside the average home number 4 or 6 shot will do plenty of damage to a bad guy and yet not tear up your walls like 00 buck does.;) :D

Would get the sks first.
The 10-22 for cheap practice and small game is a great idea.
My take on shotguns differs from most:
They are the most overrated and talked up firearms (tho' wouldn't be without mine).
Yes, they are very powerful and handle a variety of ammo types........at pistol ranges!
The sks is a far better deer gun.
The 10-22 is much superior for small game, and won't disturb the peace of the countryside too much especially if you use subsonics that function well in the little auto.

Why not join your local gun club and learn what you need to know?By being better informed you will inevitably make a better decision !
Happy shooting
Nig

I'd have to agree - a good model 94 or 1894 carbine in 30-30 is a very practical gun good for hunting up to moose with the right bullet and proper bullet placement and makes a good home defense gun. Cast bullets work well in the old "thutty-thutty".

I'm pretty sure H.R. 1022 is still waiting in the wings for the next school shooting involving a black rifle. Also, OSHA is considering a widespread ruling that would make it very expensive, if not impossible to buy small arms ammunition through any of the usual channels. Read more.
