Another Question From Dr.Bill

If I'm backpacking I carry a smaller knife (5" or less) because I'm getting too old and feeble to carry a big one! :) But if I'm canoe camping I might still bring a camp knife or a hatchet along... It's true though that as my skills have improved, I don't feel a NEED for a larger tool.

I grew up a billy goat roaming the hills.
A SAK is all I need.
I do like to have a large blade just in case but haven't needed one.

Well 'Ol Bud.....I am in now way a Pro at the Survival game but I have been at it for a long time ;) My answer to your question is : Stay the same .
Can I do it with a 4" blade ? yes ! BUT it is much easier with a combo of some sort....A large chopper or belt axe & a 3~4" bushcraft type knife. This is my personal choice. I grew up learning/watching my father do everything with his W49 Western Bowie from making kindling for the fire to processing Deer & other wild game !

The more you know, the less you need.

Simplify.

However you want to say it, it's hard to beat what those before us used on a daily basis. Thier livilihood depended on it.

How can you improve on that simplification and craftsmanship. Examples being a Mora knife, axes of the early 1900s, early spokeshaves, etc.

Problem is, many of those who make tools today, don't depend on there performance as it relates to thier livilihood and us as customers don't know anybetter as we have day jobs.
